Nothing major but I was thinking it'd be really cool if when you were training a specific skill, you could get a little bit of extra SP each time you used whatever that skill was for. So like if you were training Drones and you used your drones to perform a task you'd get a little sp for it, but ONLY if that was the skill that was actively training.
Obviously it wouldn't be much but it'd be something to give the people that actually do play the game a little edge over those people that just log in, queue skills, and log off and it might even give those people a reason to actually play vs afking. Of course the current mechanics wouldn't change at all, just something to add on top of it.
Is this a cool idea or am I just dumb? |

I really think eve could benefit from some sort of skill point grinding system. However it should be limited in how many points per day you could gain, so it wasn't mandatory, but it could give new players something to "work for" until they get the ropes better.
I think Active skills would be the best way to do it, so guns and missile skill points are learned while being used, in addition to the normal training. Again, only a few thousand points per day (good training now is 2800 pts per hour) Always ... Never ... Forget to check your references.-áPeace out Zulu! Hope you land well! |

no, just no. Eve is great because its the only game that doesnt have a gaytarded leveling system. Boltorano > Freaking Landrae, how does he work?

Eve's skill training system is pretty unique.
Sure an experience style system makes some sense. Rewards people for playing the game more rather than just logging in to change skill queues. Less of an issue since they removed ghost training.
If implemented without restrictions there'd be a lot of vets who wish to maintain their SP advantage and the flexibility that comes from that. Secondly it would be days before botting programs were adapted and characters churned out en masse to be sold on the bazaar.
Even if implemented in a restricted form it would be seen as pretty much mandatory to log in and actively train your character each day. Reminds me of power hour in Ultima Online where you'd log in each character for an hour and run your macros to take advantage of the skill training boost. |

What makes you say it would be mandatory? I was thinking of it more of a thing for those who chose to take advantage of it, and like I said it wouldn't be much. Certainly nothing worth changing the way you play for. Just something to reward those who do play. It wouldn't shave thousands upon thousands of hours off of your training time. Just a few minutes on lower level skills and maybe a few hours on the longer ones. Nothing spectacular. |

Gosh you people really don't think outside the box here do you?
1. Civilian modules would be restricted.
2. Weapon skills would actually require you to be in combat with a ship, not a rock.
3. Like someone already suggested, there could be daily limits.
I still think it seems really cool and can't think of a thing wrong with it. |

Basically you benefit from active playing, you will get more isk by doing something productive.
It is not skill points that matter on EVE, it is knowing what to do and experience comes only by doing something in EVE, so there is system you proposed, it is not skill points for your char but it is hidden skill point for you ! |

Well sure, if it's 1000 sp a day for one skill it wouldn't be much. However every min/maxer would still be training that every day.
Eve is one of the few games where player skill can trump character skill once you've got the basics. Another advantage of pure time based training is that it encourages new players to go out and put the skills they've learnt into practice rather than just grinding them with blinkers on until they've achieved some sort of minimum template.

And while they're putting that skill into practice, they could also be actually learning that skil! It only makes sense. You practice mining, you get better at it. If anything being able to learn a skill slightly faster is going to be more freeing than the point you're trying to make.

Thanks for actually having a reason for your opinion, but honestly botting is something that shouldn't even be IN the game. It should not even be a concern when adding something to the game. The fact that it is just shows that CCP just needs to crack down on botting and getting it under control.
It is a very valid point though with the state of the game, although it shouldn't even be a concern.

The problem is there's no way to do it that's not exploitable.
The real issue is that there's two phases to skill training:
1) The first 3-4M SPs where you can't really do anything and just suck all around 2) All the SPs you get after that, which open up new shiptypes (or maybe other stuff like industry, if that's your thing) but don't make what you already have any better. |

It started stupid, that is the core problem.
EVE has a skill point system.
EVE does not have an experience point system.
Part of the beauty of EVE is that you can spray and walk away; and come back two weeks later with that skill you wanted. It also means you can choose a specific set of skills and once you have those trained, you are on equal footing with somebody else with those skills.
That type of mechanism would put me off EVE Online.
I can play this game and enjoy it and know that the "leveling" process is taking care of itself. This means players, myself included, can focus on the game play we enjoy. Now you want to add a system where that "leveling" grind from other MMOs comes to EVE. You would HAVE to be actively using the skills you are training to speed up their training.
So no, I think your idea smacks of GearScore style retardation. I would not want to see anything remotely resembling it in EVE Online. Thank you.

Its like that simple Current SP system stays You get extra 1000 or so SP max per day at one skill ... Lets say you fly caracal got assault launchers there. got light missiles to III and you shoot with it and if you are persistant and do that 26 hr that day it will grow by 1000 SP .. big deal NO

Read between the lines.
- it doesn't matter whether or not people are restricted from using civilian weapons to "train"... guns that use ammo can either be macro'ed/botted or have a stack of coins put on the F1 key. With lasers (both combat and mining) don't even "need" ammo and can fired for as long as you are "cap stable."
- You can put two ships... at a "deathstar" POS... shooting at each other (with drones, guns, missiles, etc)... with either cap-stable self-repping fits or with cap stable logistics ships repping the shooting ships... and keep this up to grind the maximum amount of skillpoints.
- Make the SP allotment too low, and it isn't worthwhile... so why add it at all? Make the SP allotment give any significant amount... EVERYONE will do it to remain "competitive" (and guess which players have more access to "deathstar" POSs and "safe space"??)
Overall, the problems are that it your idea is EXTREMELY exploitable (even though macros and bots are illegal, it doesn't mean we can ignore them when creating a new mechanic... that's just ignorant), it detracts from day-to-day gameplay (ex: "can't come on a roam guys, gotta grind up my large laser SP a bit"), and you'll find that the idea just isn't very well received by many players on the grounds of "principle." I was about to say that I remembered it used to have something like this back in 2003. The irony was the gameplay documentation was so bad virtually nobody knew about it :)
I (for example) only really developed my mechanics skill by swapping cargo expanders for overdrives at either end of a plutonium run and didn't realize what was going on till much later.
But its a bit of a crappy idea. Once you know how to trigger xp reward its always exploitable. Look at how many cheesy things people are doing in Skyrim to level their abilities.

The same thing was said about mission types and agents. Result: system was "simplified".

Amusingly I told you about the system way back in Phoenix Alliance days (my alt was a RKK director then, rented their first Venal office). I remember your plutonium runs well :)
Heh yeah, those were the wild west days of eve online really, no warp to zero, no warp core stabs, 130m isk (all your worldly assets) in the cargo bay of a bestower hoping to make 20m isk a round trip through 20 systems of 0.0 :)

Not going to happen again. Ever. I was about to say that I remembered it used to have something like this back in 2003. The irony was the gameplay documentation was so bad virtually nobody knew about it :) I (for example) only really developed my mechanics skill by swapping cargo expanders for overdrives at either end of a plutonium run and didn't realize what was going on till much later. .

The system we have in EVE is so bad that Sony is stealing it for PlanteSide 2 ... shocking I know.
Once upon a time I thought that a skill degradation mechanic for the skills you haven't used in a while would make things a little more interesting, but had to concede that even that would get abused through macroing and botting. I'm yet to see an experience based system that hasn't been abused.

Its pretty bad in most other games that had that system. Most notably in Oblivion, where the best way to level most skills involving some mechanism to hold the relevant action button down and going afk for hours. Or in LOTRO, where I used to just spam my skills every time they came off cooldown in order to earn the relevant deed faster. Its definitely not fun, and its not even especially realistic. Repetition of mundane tasks only gets you so far, and besides we're all supposed to be learning via Matrix style skill injection anyway. |

Sure it does. I don't know a single new player that can make 3M per day without help. Nor do I know of any brand players that are blind enough to think that they should be able to fly every ship on day 1.

As I understand it, the "training" you are doing is actually a forced upload of experience into the brain. In other words, it actually restructures your neural network, strengthening the pathways toward your new skill. Actual experience would be quickly overridden/surpassed in such a system.
So it just doesn't fit the mythology.
It's also one of those things that yeah, is annoying, but keeps EvE worth playing. You can take a week off from eve and as long as you continue your skill queue you won't log back in to find all your friends in some other tier fighting at a level you can't even hope to participate in.
For the kiddies who can spend all day paying a game, I'm sure that sucks. They want instant gratification. I admit, sometimes I'm annoyed as well....waiting 2 weeks for T2 larges...ugh... but if everything comes instantly, nothing is worth working for. Further, this is really an adult game and adults have jobs....some of them do anyway. Jobs, lives, kids (ick), and sometimes want to go to the bar to get their drunk on rather than while playing a game.
So no, in the end I don't like the idea. The benefit you get in training your weapons is getting better at the game. This is enough and it's unlike most other MMO's out there where the ONLY difference between win and loose is how many XP/RP/whatever P you have.
Hell, just the other day I had a 2004 toon sitting in station talking smack because he was scared of my buddy's BC...my buddy who'd logged out of disgust at the dude's cowardice. "You don't attack a BS in a BC without backup, you can't be that stupid!" <- when people like that are flying around in well "trained" characters you know full well the real difference in this game is intellect and real playing experience, not SP.
Working as intended and frankly speaking it's working well. This is one area of the game I would NOT change. |

I swear, half the people here didn't even read half the posts, or use half of their brain before posting. Almost all of your dumbass arguments were put to rest before you even posted them. The main reason I can see for not doing this is that half the eve playerbase is afraid of change, which is fine, that's all you have to say. But just once again for the idiots:
1. You wouldn't have to grind, whatsoever. The current skill system would still be in the game. This would happen passively as you played the game. No grinding required, and there's no reason you'd have to go out and grind because it wouldn't be that much of a difference.
2. To the people who for whatever reason keep talking about asteroids, read all the posts on the first page, k?
3. It wouldn't stop all you afkers from afking, you're still gonna get your sp. I'm just gonna have a little more(like and hour more!) .
4. Botters are gonna bot no matter what, that's no excuse to keep something from the game. It's an excuse for CCP to fix the problem of botting.
I don't understand where people keep getting that'd it'd be a gamebreaking amount of SP. This is how the grinding would go, 3 hours for 5 minutes. That would not be worth changing your current playstyle at all. It's just something meant to add up overtime forr the players that play the game. There's no instant gratification, there's no grinding. |

But you have to think about how much time that 80 million isk is actually worth, not the time that the implant shaves off. Basically you're trading 30 minutes worth of isk for an hour worth of training. Good trade IMO. This system would be trading 3 hours worth of time for 5 minutes worth. |

Grinding something to make some number go up is a horrible mechanic. Eve's success and appeal is derived from its sandbox approach and its system of risk/reward/social consequence. Personally, I think we should ditch the time based system and replace it with a more sophisticated clone/implant system. Skills could be manufactured through some process, and people build their clones out of that, and on podding of course loose all of it. In this way specialized clones could be created, higher skilled clones naturally being more expensive. This also makes it easier to balance various ships, and eliminates the long term inflation of skills.

Crew could develop certain bonuses over time. This would probably not be skill advancement increases, but something that can stack with skills - akin to rigs. It'd probably mainly be module activation cycle bonuses, capacitor usage, etc.
Larger ships would have more "crew slots" allowing you to have bigger bonuses or more different ones - like rigs.
If the ship is destroyed, the crew is lost. (like rigs... just kidding, I'll stop now) Or they have a very low chance of dropping as loot or salvage. Perhaps a 5%-20% chance for each "crew unit" dropping "intact" with its accrued skill, and/or a chance to produce a blank "crew unit" from salvaging a wreck.
If the crew is inactive for a certain period of time, it begins to lose its bonus, dwindling down to a blank slate.
Crew units would be tradeable on a personnel market. This would flatten the playing field, allowing people not interested in grinding to acquire the elite crews as well. Amarrad - Amarr language project |

OK, lets assume for a moment you can make this in such a manner. You end up with one of two conditions:
1) It makes a noticeable difference whether you grind for SP or not and thus you'll be spending the whole game grinding for SP in the best of conditions (no bots).
2) Nobody in their right mind would bother and thus it's just a waste of effort on the dev's part (and designing and implementing an entire new mechanic is a LOT of work so it better be worth the ******* bother).
So lets assume it makes a noticeable difference. The idea is that you toss Large Projectile 5 on the heap and you can go shoot stuff with big guns for a while to make a few extra SP. I'm on approx 3 hours per day, the skill I'm training has something like 300k SP, it's going to take 19days. So if I spend every amount of EvE time I have to shoot things I get to finish in 18.something.
Now, I'm assuming we have to spend some certain amount of our time shooting stuff. I can't just go shoot a rat in a belt, sit there for 3 hours, and get the credit, right? I have to be actively firing guns, spending ammo, etc... So, since some amount of those 3 hours is spend finding targets, I actually have to play for 4-5 doing nothing but grind.
Now that's if I'm grinding rats or something. I go to a system with a lot of rats and anomalies, they spawn instantly, I can spend 3/4 of my time actually firing large projectiles at something and hit it. Either that or I'm spamming lvl 4's.
God help the PvPer. He's going to get maybe 1 SP for his grind. There's not many places where you can actually shoot at other players for 5 hours straight without having to hide and/or hunt. The only place you could perhaps do this is some place out in 0.0 where you could have an alt sitting in a drake and just pound it all day long.
So, I can spend 2-3 weeks doing this every damn day in order to gain what, 1 hour off of my training time or something? Not even that?
My question is thus, why the hell would anyone want this??? Honestly, this sounds like the worst damn thing ever! What the holy ******* **** are you thinking??!! You would HAVE to be a robot to do this.
So then, at the level you're talking it's a total waste. The devs shouldn't even consider wasting any amount of effort on this at all. Even switching one like of code from "i" to "++i" would be too much.
On the other hand, if you make it actually useful. Perhaps I save a day or two...now you have a problem. Now it becomes NECESSARY to do that grind I just described. EvE becomes a ******* NPC grind fest. Granted, I do that from time to time for ISK, but to have to do it every time I log in or lose momentum.... If CCP ever does this, I will quit and never come back this time. All the apologies in the world, all the "finding our direction again" crap would not bring me back. Seriously.
Ergo, this is the dumbest ******* idea I've ever heard. QED. Check mate and all that crap. **** this idea. In the butt....with a spinefish. |

Here are two scenarios:
1. Your completely idiotic scenario. Put skill, go out and grind(EVEN THOUGH IT'S BEEN STATED TONS OF TIMES IN THIS THREAD THAT, THAT IS NOT THE PURPOSE)
2. Train your skills like normal, run your missions like normal, get passive skill increase as you do what you normally do.
If you choose to grind, that is a CHOICE. No one is forcing you to go out and change your daily routine to gain a few minutes, like you seem to think. It would happen passively as you play the game the way you normally do.
Most people training for blasters level 5 are using blasters in their daily gaming, am I right? So you put Blasters V in your queue, and go out and do whatever you do normally and gain a few extra sp. You don't have to go out and grind for it, you just do what you normally do. It's a passive system, as I've stated a thousand times before.
Let me bold this so maybe, just maybe I won't have to explain this again
The way this would work would require NO changes in the way anyone plays their game. You do NOT have to go out and grind for it as that would be a waste of time. It is something meant to supplement your normal gaming experience and make it that much more worthwhile.
Like really, did you even think before you posted? Did I ever say someone would hold a gun to your head and force you to go out and grind to save 5 minutes? No, that's a choice, and if you chose to do that, well I must say, you are the stupid ass, not the system.
The system I'm proposing, as I've said over and over, completely discourages grinding to the point where only the biggest dumbasses(you) would consider doing it. Please, be less stupid next time you post ok? |

Yeah, it would take a lot of undeserved work and developer attention to design and implement a system that was at all useful and wasn't trivially abusable. It's a game ruining idea poorly thought out by someone obviously unwilling to have a serious look at its flaws.
There are ways around this issue too. You could require that the ship actually get destroyed. You could require different ships, etc... But each and every skill would require this kind of attention and it's simply not worth it. |

Either the buffs the system provides are so negligible as to be a complete waste of developer time, or it produces a non-trivial bonus, in which case anyone grinding will have an advantage over everyone else - which in turn forces everyone to grind to remain competitive.
Just because it's optional or not mandatory doesn't mean that the problem completely ceases to exist for people who don't want it. If opting out means you're gonna be standing still in comparison to the people who opt-in, it's not a viable option at all.

Anyway, don't really expect an answer here either. Good luck with your brilliant plan. I hope that it gets all the attention that it deserves.

You'd have to be smarter than you are to understand the irony here I think. In other words, you'd have to know what the term you're using actually means.
And yes, I am admitting defeat here.

As Marduk says, there are two possible scenarios:
Either the buffs the system provides are so negligible as to be a complete waste of developer time, or it produces a non-trivial bonus, in which case anyone grinding will have an advantage over everyone else - which in turn forces everyone to grind to remain competitive.
Just because it's optional or not mandatory doesn't mean that the problem completely ceases to exist for people who don't want it. If opting out means you're gonna be standing still in comparison to the people who opt-in, it's not a viable option at all.
It wouldn't have to be either of those. Negligible in the short term, yes. In the long term it would = out to days worth of sp, but not so much that it would be worth wasting time in the short term to grind it out.
In other words, "I want both and am pretending that's possible."

I kinda like parts about this. Take out the crew dropping as loot, or being able to sell the ship or crew members on the market or contracts. If you repackage or contract it the crew bonus gets set to 0.
You can build your crew up and in turn they will get better flying the ship. Maybe boost the ships resistances slightly the more your shot, boost the weapon damage the more you shoot, or any of the other attributes pertaining to that ship. Once you lose the ship you lose your crew with there bonuses.
I can see people building up ratting ships and saving them, but as long as the bonus is minimal it could be fun. |

Again, only a few thousand points per day (good training now is 2800 pts per hour) no, just no. Eve is great because its the only game that doesnt have a gaytarded leveling system. +1

IF this were to be implemented, I would do it as a separate system from the skillbooks. Skills would stay the same, you just add another layer of bonuses on top. Put a cap on it, so people can't just grind into infinity. Do a talent type system where you get cool little bonuses that might make you fly a little faster or shoot a little harder. Make it so you can wipe it and start over. Would require careful balancing, and CCP already has their handful on that. Plus, one of the most unique things about EVE is that it doesn't have a system like that, so i'm inclined to leave it that way. |

You make it useful: The grind is mandatory.
You don't make it useful: There is no point in wasting development and design time on it.

One of the things I love about Eve is it takes into consideration that I have a life. I can take off from it whenever RL obligations happen, yet I'm still learning. After all why not, I'm paying a monthly fee for each account. They should be working towards advancement in some way.
I don't have to sit in front of the computer 24/7 to skill up. It's the reason I've quit every other mmo prior to Eve. I think those grind fest leveling mmo's are for kids who don't actually have to work for a living. |

Well heres how the idea when it was discussed in length was presented in final form
Crew was a new recource planetary interaction created via schools and resoruces. This produced various types of crews.
Larger the ship more crew 'quaters' you had.
Crews are actually Crew Contracts basically it simplifies the need 1000 crew members for a carrier down to a mix of 8 contracts give or take. (or however many crew slots devs decide on most of the thread agreed 4 max for caps and -1 for every weight class on down. So 1 Frig, 2 Cruiser, 3 Battleship. 4 Cap.)
Various crews offered various outputs that are very minor to the point they shouldn't rival a cheap implant for cost time effectiveness.
Crews in PVE leveled far slower than in PVP situations
Crews have level caps.
Crews might die if a lucky hit to the ship was made (ie armor below 50% and a critical strike happened)
Crew EXP amounts are only calcuated on session changes. The ship only check thier level for effect of bonus. Thus a leveled up crew will have to wait for the 15 minute timer the cashflow is normally done on or a session change to take effect.
Crews lose massive amounts of EXP when thier ship is destroyed.
Combining like crews from recovered loot containers or salvaged can restore some lost exp. A Search and Rescue ship could specialize in people recovery.
Crews can be 'repaired' but this only prevents larger portions of thier exp to be damaged with the fresh bodies.
Crews when installed become bound to a ship hull. So a Demios Crew will not operate too well on a Thorax and lose more exp when forced to transfer into new ships.
However crews can be sold on open market at a higher tax rate (aka tranfer fee) and any pilot with a matching ship can obtain them to install on thier ship at the same level they where trained up to.
Lvl 1 crew would be easily obtainable from PI and should remain cheap, higher level crews must be trained and cannot be obtained other than training lvl 1 crews.

Of course the current mechanics wouldn't change at all, just something to add on top of it.
Is this a cool idea or am I just dumb?
Sure, all they have to do is increase the SP required so that after the new system is implemented, it takes about the same time to skill up.
It's like taxes. Everyone thinks things will be so much cheaper without taxes. What really happens, being in a place without tax, is that the prices stay the same and the vendors pocket the difference. Since the customers are used to paying xx amount for the goods anyway, they don't complain much.
Or, buy one get something else FREE. The free item isn't really free. The item you buy is just jacked up to compensate. |

The idea is not bad, but this game lacks the "Stupidity" skill which some players excel at. It should be a direct-link to the Intelligence attribute, so the higher the stupidity, the lower the Intelligence.

Any spoilers on what your ideas are then?
Perpetuum used a similar system to eve, but instead of actually setting a skill to train, you accumulated SP over time that you could assign to whatever skill you wanted. Extreme upside obviously being that you don't have to worry about setting long enough skills to cover absences from game.
