But if you want some evidence to the contrary, i suggest you watch these movies.
Starwars Ep4 Starwars Ep5 Starwars EP6 The Last Starfighter Spaceballs Im sure there is more, but im lazy and not up on my space movie listings.
And play these games
X-Wing Tie-Fighter X-Win vs Tie-Fighter Freespace Freespace 2 X X2 X3 Wing Commander Wing Commander 2 Wing Commander 3 Wing Commander: Prophecy Star Craft Independence War Independance War 2
I'd like to go down that list with you
Starwars 4 - Flawed Ship Design Starwars 5 - What large ships died here? The falcon ran away successfully, yes... but hardly a victory. Starwars 6 - Flawed Ship design: Death Star; Big ship vs Big ship (Other battle) Last Starfighter - Well, I can't speak to that one, I haven't seen it since I was six Spaceballs - There was a self destruct button... it was sabotage effectively.
And my own entry: Babylon 5 - Probably the pinnacle of semi-realistic sci-fi in TV/Movies, at least where human technology was involved. Of course, there were no shields here, so simply crashing into your target could often destroy it, but if you look at the station, it was covered in anti-fighter weaponry (I believe they were referred to as interceptor weapons) -- as well as larger guns.
Most of those games I can't speak about because I haven't played them, but of those I can:
Wing Commander: Prophecy - as I recall, unless the figher was a bomber, it had no prayer of taking out a larger ship, and as a bomber it would easily fall to another fighter. (Hey, we see that in real life -- look at modern bombers, defenseless against other small craft, but devastating to larger targets!)
Star Craft - I can't really consider this much of a space simulation, 90% of your time is spent on the ground, and the ships you do get to work with really aren't that big.
And my own entry for video games: Star Wars - Empire At War: Take a look at the hardpoints on any of the larger ships and you'll see laser batters mixed in with turbolaser batteries, one for large targets, one for small targets. Of course the larger ships aren't ideally suited to fighting smaller ships, though given enough time they will certainly wipe them out.
Meanwhile, discounting Spaceballs because it was supposed to be a joke, all of the large ships in all the starwars movies were covered with small turbolaser batteries, designed to take out fighters and other small craft, while their larger guns focused on more important targets.
Feel free to point out, in the entries I expanded, and in those I ignored, how smaller ships were suposed to take on larger ships, and how those ships weren't supposed to defend themselves effectively.

Now I'm not saying that this gun enhancement is necessarily a good idea, in fact I'm not sure I'd care for it myself; and I will concede, the traditional anti-fighter weapon is fighters of your own. Technically thats the role our drones are supposed to fill - small support fighters, but they can't do that effectively when they're so limited in number (and yes I know why they're limited...).
Also, I concede that the analogy of our frigates to fighters isn't very accurate, our frigates are still full ships, and I personally do see that a sufficiently large group of anything could take down a ship. Throw a few hundred trillion mosquitoes at a domi and at least you'll clog its engines.
Instead, let me suggest that we reevaluate the role of these ships. Perhaps in big-ship warfare, frigates shouldn't be killing enemies other than other frigates, but instead destroying or disabling individual systems. Make the enemy your size. This balance paradigm worked excellently in the scifi sim Nexus, and if you think for a moment that some systems in a large ship are as large as your small ship, it makes sense.
Just my 2 cents, and a little more for good measure. (Do give nexus a try if you haven't, it's quite good considering how poorly it did.) Don't mind me, I'm made up. |
