I'm sort of looking for a decent ship to do some solo pew pew in. The only thing I can find is a kessy, but it can't really kill anything bigger than a frig.
I've looked at a Caracel, but it's tank is so bad that it can't really do anything but die.
Being Caldari, I focused on missiles, but it seems there is no half-decent missile ship that's also fairly fast (To get into scram/web range) and has a decent tank...
Am I missing something, or do Caldari just plain suck at solo pvp?

In short : caldari ships are big, heavy, slow. They have monster tanks but with no soloing chance. If you can switch race to another if you want to solo.

There has been a transfer of technology between amarr and caldari.
Caldari gave amarr useless shild and missile garbage and khanid where born. They suck.
Amarr gave Caldari the tech to be slow fat and not having enough mid slots for pvp modules. They suck. ________________ Kali 2.0 Patchnotes; "Cleared old and useless Database entries":

Caldari aren't as bad at solo pvp as they're often made out to be (although they're still not great). You've just got to accept the fact that you're not going to be able to fill your mids with hardners, boost amps and other assorted shield tanking bumf.
On a Caracal for example, assault launchers + 2 large shield extenders give you plenty of space for PVP modules with a somewhat solid HP buffer. You can manage a reasonable short term shield tank in 2 or 3 slots: it won't be as good as using 5 or 6 slots, but if you pick your targets half-intelligently, it doesn't have to be. If all else fails, cram an armour tank into your lows (big plates are your friend), leaving you with plenty of slots for all the webs, scrams, MWDs, sensor boosters and EW you could ever want .

Hmm, call me crazy, but what about a Cormorant setup? Yeah yeah, I know dessies are supposed to suck at anything other than ganking a frig and what not, but I like thinking out of the box.
It's slow as any other Caldari ship especially without an AB, so some might get away (Though there's enough people that don't even notice you untill you're on top of them...), but it has a fairly decent tank.
High: 1x rocket launcher, 4x light electron blaster, 3x small nos Mid: 7,5km scram, web, medium shield extender, small shield booster (Can fit a med, but I'll run into cap problems rather quickly when activated) Low: MAPC
It has a less gank with the NOS's, but it can run the tank forever (Providing my opponent doesn't run out of cap)
Or I could go with a "passive" tank with 7 blasters and a second med extender, or an AB.

Let me put it this way, you can Poon peeps with a inty friend or you can sacrifice a tanking slot or 2 for lock down mods like a scram and web, the choice is yours. but i have a few Caldari friends that i would not like to meet alone in a Roid belt in 0.0, trust me get some SP's all into a Raven set up and you will do fine. do reserch, ask friends for set ups, tweek your set up and duel a friends .. trust me in time u will find a gank set up that will be the poon for you. With the right amount of SP's and mods, the Raven is probly one of the most deadly BS's out there and im not even caldari, i fly Gallente.

Solo? no. Gang? definetly. I think the problem with eve is that all the videos in the video channel glorify solo guys in gallente ships wtfpwning everybody else. Realize that in 0.0, going off on your own is more often than not a death wish. So it doesnt really matter how well your ship does solo, even the greatest solo ship will fall prey to a well setup gate camp. Find a ship you like to fly, and fly it in gangs in 0.0

Cormorant:
6 x 150mm Railgun II w/Spike
2 x Tracking Computer II 2 x Sensor Booster II
1 x Tracking Enhancer II
you might need a PG rig, or have one anyway if you can fit 7 guns, but cpu will be tight.
100km sniping, lethal on interceptors at 40km+ range.

Drake's just about usable, but you really need to run an ewar setup rather than a tanked setup.
Raven too, can be used solo, but again, just forget about shield tanking it.
Actually, I rather thing shield tanking is what's incompatible with (solo) PvP. Unless it's the 'fit a large extender for a little more survivability' style.

As a fellow Caldari pilot myself, I just want to recommend training Gallente ships ASAP if you decide to PVP. Caldari is good for gangs, especially the Drake, because you will never find yourself as the primary in a Drake (that is a good thing). Solo PVP is not for Caldari, period. Train to use the Thorax, train drones, kill kill kill.
Use your Caldari ships and missle skills for mission running.

Training Gallente isn't such a bad thing, especially gunslinger Caldari like myself. The hardest part is rerigging your entire thinking to short range combat. Gallente ships have more damage bonuses than range bonuses, and the MWD cap use on the Thorax makes it a natural choice for a pointblank tackler.
Armor tanking takes getting used to as well, but the logic behind it isn't so dissimilar from shield tanking that adaptation is difficult. If you can do the math to build a shield tanking ship, you can do the math to build an armor tanker.
Drone skills work whether you're Caldari or Gallente. Gallente obviously have the edge here, but even for me, the difference in drone performance going from straight Drones V to adding Drone Interfacing III has been stunning. For mission running, I'd been tying myself in knots trying to puzzle out how to cope with frigates at close range without losing the pewpew at long range.
I don't bother with it anymore.

Edited by: Mik Nostrebor on 26/04/2007 01:41:45 In my area the most favoured solo PvP ships are:
Hurricane Drake Vexor/Thorax Vagabond Cerberus
In this it is the Hurricane and Drake that are the vast majority. I guess the Drake's broad tank bonus (+5 all shiled resist per BC level) and reasonable DPS (7 heavy launchers) that make it attractive.
Having 6 mids and 4 lows means that you can put a basic tank on it and up the DPS to overwhelm your opponent.
An example might be:
MID: web 20k scram AB/MWD Large Shield Ext II 2 hardeners (which ever are most appropriate for the area. Most go for EM but I find kin/therm are the most common types that need boosting) or 1 Invlun Field and SB.
I personally believe that two specific hardners would work better.
LOW: Ballistic Control Systems x 2 Power Diagnostic Systems x 1 Damage Control Unit x 1
Drones: 5x T2 lights (hobgoblins are commonly used)
Note that if you have a partner who can web then the web does not actually benefit the big slow missile thrower and can be replaced by another EW mod (painter/tracking disruptor etc)
So, if the local pirates like Drakes then they most be able to pull their weight :) |

No, but losing 3 to speed mod, web, and scram really does hurt.

WTF??? Caracal i AWESOME shield tanker, on this level I am. I'm minmatar, but currently flying caldari. I'm younger than 2 months, but my engineering skills are pretty high. I have around 4k shield points, (probably more), crazy shield resistances. ALL level 2 mission, i just warp in, stop my ship and fire away. I don't have much expirience in pvp, but all i can say is that 3 years old pirate player in Harpy (1 on 1) couldn't pierce my tank.
oh, my setup is something like large shield extender, some named large shield booster and large cap recharger (with 800 caps in), invul. field 1 (or something racial specific). In lows i have 2x PDS 1. All tech 1, some named.

Could you kill the harpy ? I guess not.
Any PvP use of Caldari ships is support or defense, where you don't need tackling gear.

Any cruiser should totally pwn an L2 mission. To be fair, caracals can do L3 missions (yes, I have), but that's primarily because NPCs are stupid. A player being kited at 120km will just warp off.
However, compare for a moment, your caracal, with it's 'PvP fit' with ... for example a thorax with the same. A thorax is faster, does more damage, and can fit a web/scram/mwd alongside it's tank (or gank, if it's so inclined).
A caracal can shield tank fairly well. However it cannot do so whilst solo PvPing, since you need a speed mod, warp scrambler and webber. This gives you 2 slots of shield tank. Or maybe 2 slots of armour tank.
*shrug* take your pick, neither's all that great.
I would also be prepared to bet that whilst you may have been able to tank the damage of a harpy, with a 'guristas' mission fit, you also weren't in any danger of actually being able to beat it - for starters, I note your lack of a web and warp disruptor, so that harpy could leave any time it felt it was losing. That's leaving aside that it could probably just tank your _primarily kinetic_ dps.

indeed, i stand corrected. Caracal sucks for 1 on 1 pvp. (No, I wasn-t able to get through Harpy's shields, but that may be becouse i SUCK in missile department).
I was just saying Caracal isn't bad shield tanker.
anyway, the rule is... DRESS FOR THE OCCASION
