Edited by: RU Sirius on 25/04/2007 17:50:45 Here are a couple of decent online resources for learning Icelandic in preparation for visiting Reykjavik this November. After all it's only polite, on visiting another country, to learn at least a few word of their language, even if it's only how to say 'please' and 'thank you' and 'I'd love to join you in that pre-breakfast hotpot' or 'How much did you say that beer cost?'

Second site
Enjoy. It's not easy, though but I have plenty of time to practice.

That's ok but it doesn't tell you how to pronounce things or let you listen to what it sounds like. Nice list of phrases to learn, though and could be used with the other two websites. The first of my links is run by the university language school and follows very established ways of teaching a second language and seems excellent, it is free to register and work your way through the extensive exercises.

You know all i did was look at the phrases and nothing else, I thought it was a Wiki page, what a dope. If you read the upper part of the page it's actually pretty funny in a kind of racist way.
Perhaps one of the Icelandic mods could provide translations of what the phrases actually say. Or maybe I'll be good enough to do that myself by November.

I will be visiting Reykjavik for the fest, but those Icelandic looks all Greek to me (and i am greek, go figure). I was told that almost everyone speaks english, so we won't have a problem.

I only ever managed to remember one word in two weeks there, but it's the most important: Takk.

But really, all you need to know:
+g µtla a= fß einn kaffi!
"I would like one coffee." For ordering at a kaffih·s (coffee house) when you need to cure that hangover. (Strangely enough, I don't know how to say beer yet.)
But for those who are worried - yes, everybody speaks English. Sometimes they will stare at you for a second until they remember how, but I've never had a problem.
And yes, takk (pronounced tock) means thanks.

Icelandic would be rather breeze to learn, well, finnish and all, but sounds alot like swedish, which is forcefed us vigorously at primary school.
Would be fun to come over and throw some real cursewords around in finnish

Ekki, Ekki, Ekki, Ptang, Zoo Ping!
He probably said that he doesn't speak Icelandic. Tg is stupidly close to the other scandinavian 'jeg', 'jag', etc. Tala is close to Swedish's tale, ekki -> ikke (norwegian), Islensku -> something to do with kittens.

straight translation of words will not get you very far in icelandic.
fire = eldur volcano = fire-mountain = eld - fjall match = fire-stick = eld-sp²ta
land of fire and ice = land elds og fs land of fires and ice = land elda og fs
singular
hTr er eldur um eld frß eldi til elds
plural
hTr eru eldar um elda frß eldum til elda
and there is no one word used for please in icelandic
ger=u ¦a= = is often used but it literally means , do it old people might say= vildur=u vµra svo vµnn a=.... = which is , could you be so kind to....
