Edited by: Don Carn''age on 26/04/2007 15:11:55 Heres a question ive wanted to ask for a long while; Is belt piracy dead Or are the minmatar regions just dead or WHAT? Someone tell me if your still finding dirty miner's in lowsec... or kids with battleships somewhere in EVE :)
I miss little gang's of AF's pumping charges into a raven tbh : )
With my corpmates forever finding ships immediately warping to POS's/stations/gates, bieng in large gangs or just bieng over cautious and especially with the expansion of lowsec missions, im finding more and more targets are actually in the 'harder to probe' deadspace zones; i personally havent had a belt kill for quite a while and thus have no use for my fun hunting HAC's and faction cruisers possibly even AF's; i have to go about in my command ships, mega pulsey t2 jobby's or big e-peen BS such as my mach or (old, cheers AOS Brendan!) Navy Mega. Gatecamping (although horribly painful in minmatar regions) is becoming the norm, its okay but rather boring and doesnt have me as quick on the scanner as i used to be, repetetive too i suppose.
Sure there are the odd drakes and smaller ships - aswell as odd kills to be had, but surely not as big as it was say, a year and half ago maybe sooner? I personally and from what others have said, have been noticing a decline in belt piracy itself.
Hand me your feedback on this one guys : )

We still often run small gang belt ops and have much success so i would say no it is not gone at all. most targets these days do tend to be on gates so sentry tanking ships are more commonly used however both are still definately viable.
I think it very much depends on the areas you're in but in these kind of groups you have to be willing to travel a long distance to get targets which can easily be achieved in a few hours in frigate gangs.
our typical op of this kind can be as much as 100 jumps round trip and meets much success

Belts seem more dry than they used to be , indeed. Not deserted , but combined with higher pirate density the odds of catching someone are kind of low. People still do complexes though.
Metropolis is a wide expanse , but you can still find miners there (even mining barges) with a bit of luck.

lowsec ratting/mining is unrewarding, uninteresting, plenty of pvpers to kill you, and 90%+ engagements end with your death => no one bothers
This isn't a game where carebears grow on trees just so you could pick on them just for fun.
Where are all the INFOD low-sec ratters?

It only ends in your dead 90% of the time if you didn't bring your friends and plan a bit.
Frankly, it isn't that dangerous in low sec. I haul and mine there every night.
Since I've been on Eve (since late November of last year), I've only been podded twice.
Twice.
It just isn't that dangerous.
Sure, you can get jumped once in a while, but it's not happening anywhere near as often as people say. ------------------

You hit the nail on the head there m8, "unrewarding, uninteresting" the belts need to give more rewards, their very lame atm.
The belts 2 day even if you find someone is very unrewarding also for the PVP player, if you lucky u might get a shield tanked Brutix !! ooo the loot... Anyone with experience is in 0.0, low sec unless gate camping = very very little to kill thats going to be worth it.

Belt piracy is not dead, the targets are getting smarter and are using the scanner as much as you are. Adapt and survive... or go mining!

No they don't, they use Local :-, carebear's best friend, instant notification of who's in local, if there is a pirate he's more then likely hunting !!
Even in a Recon he's docked before you can scan him down, why Local ! Nurf local to have a delay or if your cloaked u don't show in the local channel, whats the point in being cloaked if someone can just look in local LOL.
You could use an ALT in a covert ops locate them and then jump in and warp to that alt ! but again if the carebear is watching his best friend before u arrive he's already warping to the station on his free insta dock.

Belt piracy is seriously hurting.
We hunt mostly in 0.0. The people in 0.0 tend to be a little more attentive than low sec.
When I enter a system, one of the following happens within 30 seconds: 1. all of the ratters log out 2. all of the ratters warp to a safespot and cloak 3. all of the ratters warp to a pos.
Since most rats don't scramble, and no rats aggro, its impossible to kill anybody who watches local.
Options 2 and 3 are irritating, but acceptable, but the first item really needs to be looked at by ccp. Logging out should never be the most useful tool for avoiding PvP.

I think you'll find that most of the people who just log out are macro ratters in noob corps. Not even the 0.0 locals can pin them down. I know Branch/Venal are just infested.

The more that the gameplay is being changed / tweaked generally screwed around with, the more I want CCP to do away with local. All system detection ability should be skill based, earn the right to know who's around, not a given. Its an old argument, but I just feel its getting more and more relevant.

The problem with removing local is that the scanner is not a good defensive tool. If it could auto update so that the person ratting/mining didn't have the spam the button every 2 seconds it might be viable.
If the scanner could auto update every few seconds and feed it's data to the overview then it gives someone paying attention a chance to escape. But it also gives the pirate a chance to sneak up and jump their pray if they are focusing too much on the pretty mining lasers.
Maybe make max scanning range decrease with the number of degrees scanned. Scanning a full 360 gives you 2au and 5 gives you 50au. The pirate still needs to warp to a local object to get which belt the target is in at which point he might be spotted and have his target flee.

I beg to differ.
Before I decided to (Recently) start heading down the road of PvP, I did ALOT of mining in low sec. I'm not sharing them in this thread lol, but I had MANY tactics that kept me safe for the most part. I was only podded maybe a couple of times in the period of a year.
I almost NEVER saw anyone speak in local chat either. I mean, at least not the other local miners I knew of. The only people I usually saw chatting it up were unfamiliar travelers, or known pirates of the area lol. People either mine in high-sec or 0.0. For ratting, 0.0 is it. Go stake a claim in Aridia for low-sec fun.

Not much reason to mine in lowsec, really. Personally, I'd put some of the higher end ores (not the best ones though) in lowsec. Same for ratting, why do it in lowsec unless you simply cant do it in 0.0.
As for local, they should just change it to "constellation" or "region". Problem solved.

I dont know why everyone wants to nerf local.. i find it ever bit as much of a too for figuring out if anyone is in the system as locals do figuring out im there to kill them.
God how i would hate to jump into a 150AU wide system with 5 planets all at far ends and have to warp around scanning just to figure out the system has only me in it. That sounds worse than a 15m agro timer when you did not even get the chance to kill anyone because they warped off and jumped to a new system.

Yeah im sure if you look hard enough there are some kills to be had. Pretty good responses so far. It definately has been reduced and i like the overview scanner ideam, more of a radar you thinking?
Gate piracy is the way forward, but it jeapordizes the solo/small gang fun that belt piracy en mass brings, i think making missions deadspace harder to probe was silly imo.

Make 'Local Chat' an option, not a requirement. As in other Channels: if you don't join, your name doesn't show up. Problem solved.
[Note: this as well reduced a minute fraction of lag as if it's not needing to load 650 people talking, it doesn't do it.]
Alt, but signed: -Eoskye
Expanded: Local is commonly watched.. doing the above will make pilots watch local chat to see who is there [perhaps friendly]. If a pirate enters the area it makes miners/ratters/etc.. aware if the pirate [who is not in local chat] is spotted physically, and thus promotes conversation and working together in the sake of defense. There is the possibility of passive players not joining local chat to avoid a pirate knowing they are there; but who would avoid it, it's human nature, the need to have people around.
Anyhow, to end this, I await a responce for ideas/opinions.

Belt piracy is completely dead. If someone is in a belt it's because either A) they're too noob to know better, and therefore probably have crap loot (ebay players are an exception here), B) it's a TRAP!, C) there isn't a C.
Local makes it impossible to get the jump on someone ratting in a belt. Everyone goes straight from the gate to the station to their mission to the station to the gate, warping in at 0km every time. It's beyond GHEY.
Hence, I have to resort to killing mission runners in their missions, which they don't even do while I'm online/in local. They wait till I'm completely logged off before they even undock, much less warp to their missions.
Because I said so...
