I recently started using a caldari caracal cruiser. And I have equipped it with HEAVY MISSILE launchers, and filled those launchers with Scourge Heavy Missiles.
During a run in with some Dire Pith Demolisher/Destroyer I found that the damage done by my heavy missiles was really REALLY low. So low that I could not complete my mission.
Could anyone tell me why the better missiles are doing LESS damage. And consequently, what skill/modules i need to train/fit to improve the damage done by heavy missiles.
Thanks for the advice.

Are you trying to use the heavy missiles on frigate-sized ships? If so, you're better off using smaller, more precise missiles. If your targets are cruisers, consider getting heavy assault missile launchers, they are basicly a short-range high ROF version of the heavy missiles.

Since you've only recently started using the caracal I'll assume your missile skill for both that ship and missiles aren't great( judging by your emploment history that seems fair). Anyway there are a lot of skill you can train to make the missiles on a caracal more effective in dealing damage, I'll just give you a list of them, you might want to train them when ever you heave time/money.
1. Caldari cruiser: This increases your rate of fire( = more damage/time) and increase the damage kinetic missiles( scourge etc) do. 2. Heavy missiles: Increases the damage done by heavy missiles by upto 25% 3. missile launcher operation & rapid launch: again increase Rate of fire and thus damage/time 4. Warhead upgrades: increases the damage done by all missiles 5. guided missile projection: allows standard, heavy and cruise missiles to to hit smaller targets for more damage, great for getting rid of frigates. 6. target navigation precision: allows you to hit fast moving targets for more damage
I hope that helps a bit, otherwise don't hesitate to ask( either here or ingame)

First off: Dire xxxx ships are Gurista "Elite" they have pretty nasty resistances.
Second, modules wise: Ballistic Control Systems , Target Painters, Webs.
Third off: Read the Missile Guide to understand how missiles actually work: http://www.eve-online.com/guide/en/g27.asp

OK...thank you for the information.
The Dire Pithi are using small frigates, so that makes them a small target. I think Guided Missile Precision may be the way forward. Or maybe I'll just swap out my heavy missiles for some light precision ones.
See what happens.

The skill youw ant to train is target navigation precision.
Every missle has an explosion velocity. If the velocity of your target is higher then the explosion velocity, the target will take less then full damage. The target will also take less than full damage if their signiture radius is small.
Standard missiles have an explosion velocity of 1750 where as heavy missles only have an explosion velocity of 750. So lets say a target is moving at 1,500 m/s (they do MWD in missions). They would take a 24% damage reudction with heavy missiles for outrunning the explosion velocity, but would take full damage from a standard missile.
Target Navigation Prediction increase the effectiveness of your missiles against shipes moving faster the explosion velocity. I reccomend training this first.
The next mitigating factor to missile damage is signiture radius. Heavy missles have an explosion radius of 150 m. Most frigates are 50 m signature, though some npc frigates are 90 m. Some player frigates get down to 30m and under. If you hit a 90m sig ship with a heavy missile and no skills, they get a 40% damage reduction. A 50m ship gets a 67% damage reduction.
Guided Missile Precision increases effectiveness against ships with a sig radius smaller then the explosion redius. However, it should be noted that this requires Missiles 5. Target Navigation Prediction only requires Missile Op 2. So you might not be able to train this for awhile.
Finally as someone had mentioned, some "elite" frigates can have 90% resists to certain damage types 9kinetic, therm. Any really, depends on the type of NPC). If you have an npc frigate, moving faster then the explosion velocity, with a smaller signature readius AND 90% resist your damage will be quite sad. You can help this by finding out which damage they are weak to and switching missile types for that mission.
The last thing I will mention is EW. If you equipt a target painter you can use it to increase the targets sig radius by 25% with low skills. A Webifier will lower target velocity by 75%. Both of these can increase effectiveness against smaller ships at the cost of cap, and mid slots (Caldari use midslots for tanking). I mainly use light drones to suppliment my missile damage against smaller targets (I am gallantean), but I am training caldari now. I won't have heavy missiles till tonight :)

You can fit 'assault missile launchers' to a Caracal in addition to your heavy launchers. Assault missile launchers use light missles, but your bonuses will make them hit a little harder than if they were fired from frigates (except Kestrel). More effective vs small targets.

The Std low skill setup I use with a caracal is 5 assault launchers in the highs, passive shield tank in the mids and a BCU/BCU or a BCU/PDS or a BCU/DC in the lows.
The frigs will give you little issue if you pound them with light missiles.

Actually, for a Caracal, caldari cruiser increases missile velocity (range increases and missiles arrive quicker), not rate of fire.
