It happened when someone posted a screenshot of a templar and asked what it was and, HI-LARIOUSLY, two people posted that it was a templar at the same time. Then all it took was the village idiot squad to pop in and repeat them two hundred and thirty thousand times for it to become a meme.

If a meme is genuinely funny it'll get spread by word of mouth naturally.
Things like the templar or shuttle meme only exist because people are sheep and they like to be 'in' on the latest thing, to the extent that they'll engineer new memes by finding vaguely amusing coincidences and spamming them everywhere and sticking them in their sigs until everyone has heard it.
That's not a meme in my books, that's a bunch of idiots spamming crap.

A meme doesn't have to be spread naturally. If its not, its still a meme; in particular, its known as a forced meme.
