Recently my corp has placed a medium amarr POS in an unfriendly system. It is almost sure to come under attack soon. My question is how do I make a medium POS stand up to attack from two dreads?
I know with sustained effort the POS will fall but I hope to make it so annoying to take it down that it is left alone... I know this has a small chance of working so another way of phrasing it. How do I make them pay a serious price to do it?
Current Setup
4 x Medium Artillery Bat. 2 x Medium Pulse Bat. 2 x Stasis Web. 2 x Thermal Hardeners 2 x EMP Hardeners
Thinking about adding
4 x Sensor Dampening 1 x Kinetic Hardner
Any input would be apreciated!

Pile it high with hardeners, make it so they have to spend a fortune on strontium to take it down. then, when they do finally reinforce it, set the timer for a time you know they won't be around.
That said, if you're incapable of defending the tower with force, you'll lose it sooner or later.

Your current setup is quite ok altho I would skip 2 hardeners leaving only one for both 0% base resitances. Main idea is to hurt dread support gang and main defending factor is your defence gang. Around 8 NOS battleships is enough to NOS their dread dry in reasonable time after that POS guns will do the rest or they will have to warp in their support fleet possibly taking losses under POS fire doing that. If budget sensitive then cruisers work also altho pop a lot easier if they warp in to snipe at them.
Around 4 ECM batteries are also good to annoy their support and ofcource sensor dampeners are good altho EW batteries work only out to 150 km. Most likely however your main defence operation will happen when it comes out of reinforced so best idea is not to put all your eggs on EW.
NOS them dry and POS will do the rest unless your guns are offline or they warp in support to make POS fire disperse until dread capacitor has chance to recover.

Thanks for the info guys,
I am still hoping to resolve our problems via negotiation but an ounce of prevention so to speak...
I read in another post that multiple sensor damps would "force" the attacking dreads to enter siege mode and close range with the POS, is this true? Or should I fit more jamming arrays than dampening arrays?
Also, does an anchored structure use tower grid and cpu? Im hopping to have more solid defenses anchored but offline. If the attack comes I can offline industrial structures and online defensive ones with the resources I gain.
Thanks again |

Anchored structures do not use resources.
And sensor dampeners (or ECM batteries) will force dreads into siege mode bcos dreads in siege mode are immune to EW. It's not like 3 damps each dropping your lock range 30% (it's staking nerfed tho) or ECM battery with jam strenght 75 will make you sit around in non siege mode. Note however that most dreads can engage from 150+ km (EW range is 150 km) but it will hurt their damage (except in case of caldary dread, but that takes 5/5 levels in relevant missile support skills to engage from 162 km approx)
Use also warp scrambling/disruptor batteryis. 2 disruptors is enough as they go offline when reinforced also. 2 Small pulse lasers might also be reasonable to kill their smaller craft after reinforced mode (when webs are offline). And ofcource mix damagetypes, only 2 damage types is a bit too easy to tank. Usual mix for artilleries is fusion/EMP, altho if you have spare grid and amarr tower then you can replace 2 arties with medium beams and leave 2 arties with just fusion.
It's not like POS on it's own (even large death star) would be able to kill 2 dreads with competent pilots. So dont forget to bring defence gang.

Thank you again for the information. I have another question if everyone's patience holds out.
If the dreads are engaging the POS from 150km does the defense gang warp right on top of the attacking dread and NOS, then flee to the safety of the POS's shields when they come under heavy attack?
Also, is it possible to know if a structure will remain online in reinforced mode by looking at it's description?

Edited by: Caletha Reborn on 06/05/2007 08:52:26 Offline / online is all determined by the CPU of a structure, if it has CPU then it'll go offline.
As for when dreads engage at 150km, if you want to engage the dreads you will always have to warp on them (give them as little time as possible to target you, especially a moros / phoenix).
The problem with them being 150km off your POS is that their support (depending on range) might come on you as well. Seeing they cant be scrambled at 150km. So its something you have to keep in mind. Though if that does happen, only expect battleships / command ships / and the occasional tanked hac/bc (as anything other then that has a big chance of getting killed by your tower before they can warp out).
Note they might bring snipers 300km off your pos (150km off the dreads) on you, but unless their numbers are high (e.g. +10-20 snipers) your BS should be OK as long as they warp out once primary'd.

Thank You Caletha,
I have read many of the "guides" for POSs but as of yet I was unable to find that simple and direct explanation for which structures will offline/online ect.
I had also considered the posibility of sniper ships defending the attacking dreads and am glad to know that it is a relatively minor concern provided you are fast on your feet.
Thanks again to everyone who has taken the time to answer my questions. I think I am going to anchor some additional guns and EW arrays pronto. If negotiations fail im thinking about the following setup for "war" mode.
4 x Medium Artillery 2 x Medium Pulse 2 x Small Pulse 2 x Stasis Web Batt. 2 x Warp Scrambling Batt. 2 x ECM Batt. 2 x Sensor Damp Batt 1 x Thermal Hardener 1 x Kinetic Hardener 1 x EM hardener
I have not checked if these exceed the limits of the medium tower, but I will in the morning. These will be online and I will anchor additional guns to online if the EW is not having the desired effect.
Any other setup advice is welcome.
Thanks again! |

Might ofcourse be too late for your POS.
You can try sitting on the other side of the bubble when looing at the dreads, and do some extra damage with sniping.

Another tactic worth mentioning is to calculate your strontium. If the POS is put into reinforced mode, it will come out when it runs out of strontium. You put enough strontium in the tower to make it come out at an inconvenient time for your enemy.
That generally means an amount that puts it 12 hours different then current time (12 hours of stront/36 hours of stront). The idea is that the dread pilots may not be available at that time to come back and finish off the POS.
Also remember the Osprey shield boost range bonus. This allows you to get a bunch of people to help recharge the shield when it comes out of reinforced (possible getting it quickly to the point where the hostiles must put it in reinforced mode again and start all over).
