Unfortunately there are so many issues going on at home that I think any kind of a real space travel is kind of on the back burner for the time being.
The main reason Rome fell and the dark ages followed was because of corupt leadership. History is undoubtably going to repeat itself if the majority of ppl don't wake up. Ironically the last dark age we had after Rome was during a mini ice age, which made life so much more difficult. Today's global warming is going to cause another mini ice age. It could have been prevented too.
The problem is that the people in control are corrupt and only care about money. We had hybrid technology at the turn of the century (last century, not this one). The only reason our cars still run on fossil fuels is because uber wealthy, corrupt corporations under government protection are in control.. and eventhough its slipping out of their vice grip, like you said, its probably too late at this point.
Additionally, our money is printed on worthless green paper printed by a private bank (the federal reserve). If the government printed it, it would need to be backed by gold or some other value...but an insanely small number of uber wealthy, corrupt individuals is in control and prints money whenever they want to.. because its not backed by anything. I'm all for capitalism, but what we have isnt capitalism. These uber rich banks and corporations are government backed totalitarians.
These two MAJOR issues could easily bring along the next dark age. Even with today's technology, an ice age will reak total havoc and misery on this planet. And if our money isn't worth anything, everyone and I mean EVERYONE is going to be in for some major hardship in the next century.
The human race (today more than ever) is completely dependent on technology for our survival. The very definition of a dark age is a period where technology and wealth is absent. I hope to God it doesn't come to this, but ppl are going to need to wake up and INSIST that our money is backed by something other than public trust. And we need to stop relying on oil as an energy source.
We're never going to get to the point of teraforming or colonizing other planets if we can't get our sh*t together at home.
