Through out the ages man has created many empires and some were very successful, Roman Ancient China, Egypt to name a few. Alot of these Empires/Civilisations did great things(good and bad) and some terrific wonders were produced.
In the new world that we live in today we could argue quite easily that we have surpassed our forbears in many areas if not all. Now the thing that all the great civilisations have had in common is that they have all come to an end and with that end came a period of anarchy or The Dark Ages which in some cases lasted 100's of years and the loss of scientific advancement was quite substantial(Romans had sewers in place, it was only hundreds of years later that the English rediscovered the technology).
Now I don't believe that the fall of our great new world civilisation is doomed I feel we do have some trying, testing and quite abhorrent times ahead of us. I think there are two or three major foreseeable issues these being :-
1) Global Warming (if it exists, but I beleive it does and not totally man made i.e. it happens all the time in the 'grand scheme of things'. Fancy an ice age anyone?)
2) The lack of Cheap Oil in the near future.
I belive there is nothing we can do about Global Warming now some scientists believe that we have passed the 'point of no return' and that it is the natural order of things, its just that we have speeded up nature . So I think we should cut our loses and do whatever it takes to preserve ourselves and the myriad of life that is abundent now. (ill explain how I think we can later).
OIL ! The life blood of the world, the substance which has allowed humanity to expand and sustain a civilisation beyond the wildest dreams of our forbears. Ahh such a sting in tail though. Starvation, poverty and destruction will come if we don't find a suitable replacement and soon. The ways that oil is used in everyday life is stagering. I think everything I touch is conected to OIL in some way, its just amazing!
So what do we need to do ?
IMHO, Firstly and most importantly we need to build an ARK like Noahs but more modern There has already begun a seed bank in various countries around the world this is excellent news ! But we also need a bank for animals/fish and every other living thing including humans (there sperm and eggs).
The Second thing we have to do is the next most important to is get into SPACE, it is the only way to ensure that we will survive as a species otherwise we just cant compete with meteors or Supernovas you get the idea its obvious. We need to find NEW WORLDS.
Thanks for reading comments welcome/views welcome . This not about politics so please leave it at the door. If anyone has any linksand views you think are relevent then please post them

Getting into space is the worst thing we can do, that's where the Cylons live and they'll kill us no matter how many planets we have. If we stay heer meteors and supernova's aren't an issue SG-1 has dealt with them before and I have every confidence that the fine men and women at cheyenne mountain will be able to save us again.

haha seriously if there are hostile Aliens out there that know we are here they would of acted on us before now and enslaved us im sure . But the best think to do to be able counter such a threat would be to multiply, spread out, explore and generally get stronger and if there are some friendly aliens make alliances . But to be honest space is so err big I think it would be some time befopre we come into contact with another form of life.

The theory of other intelligent life forms existing in the universe is quite interesting. S.E.T.I has formulated the theory. Wont bore you with the math and everything.
The theory goes; its not about if other life exists, more when it existed. They described it as a record disk. If mankind's lifespan was a needle pin on the record. The chances of another intelligent race (being of the same existance span of us) actually being on the same line of the record, let alone the same precise area is near impossible.
So if intelligent life is or was or will be out there. Humanity most probably will never see it.
The arguement is that we as a race could live forever once we have the means to spead out into space.
But then forever is a long time and to become more than just a needle on the record we may as well not even mention.

Typically, any alien race capable of traveling the stars probably have better things to do than to lay claim on one planet, when there is no shortage of planets. Unlike ourselves where we fight amongst ourselves.
Look, we even pretend to fight against each other in video games.

The chance on extraterrestrial life is 1, since the number of planets is infinite, and therefor the number of hospitable planets is infinite. The chance of them meeting us is close to zero however cause in the 10 billion years past since the big bang, they could have emerged, risen to power, struggled due to conflict, and killed themselves off, just like humanity will do eventually.

Well if the Alien race is anything like humanity there will be plenty of scope for exploitation and domoination, there will always be afewi individuals or groups of individuals that will be looking for profit status w/e and our world could provide them with that. That being said that is if they are like us, they may well be extremly benevolent

Which is why it is essential we spread as far and as wide as we can possibly go, so everyone wont be caught up in the annihilation and some can carry on.

Unfortunately there are so many issues going on at home that I think any kind of a real space travel is kind of on the back burner for the time being.
The main reason Rome fell and the dark ages followed was because of corupt leadership. History is undoubtably going to repeat itself if the majority of ppl don't wake up. Ironically the last dark age we had after Rome was during a mini ice age, which made life so much more difficult. Today's global warming is going to cause another mini ice age. It could have been prevented too.
The problem is that the people in control are corrupt and only care about money. We had hybrid technology at the turn of the century (last century, not this one). The only reason our cars still run on fossil fuels is because uber wealthy, corrupt corporations under government protection are in control.. and eventhough its slipping out of their vice grip, like you said, its probably too late at this point.
Additionally, our money is printed on worthless green paper printed by a private bank (the federal reserve). If the government printed it, it would need to be backed by gold or some other value...but an insanely small number of uber wealthy, corrupt individuals is in control and prints money whenever they want to.. because its not backed by anything. I'm all for capitalism, but what we have isnt capitalism. These uber rich banks and corporations are government backed totalitarians.
These two MAJOR issues could easily bring along the next dark age. Even with today's technology, an ice age will reak total havoc and misery on this planet. And if our money isn't worth anything, everyone and I mean EVERYONE is going to be in for some major hardship in the next century.
The human race (today more than ever) is completely dependent on technology for our survival. The very definition of a dark age is a period where technology and wealth is absent. I hope to God it doesn't come to this, but ppl are going to need to wake up and INSIST that our money is backed by something other than public trust. And we need to stop relying on oil as an energy source.
We're never going to get to the point of teraforming or colonizing other planets if we can't get our sh*t together at home.

Given the amount of noise (All that radio, wireless, and other stuff has to go somewhere...) that our civilization makes, its is very likely that any nearby alien race already knows about us.
Whether that is a good thing, I don't know.

Radio travels at the speed of light. We've only started transmitting significant amounts of it in the past fifty years, which means the signals can only be 50 lightyears away from us - an area without any habitable planets, so, no.

The problem with finding intelligent life (or any life) out there, is quite simply, time.
There's near-infinite planets out there, so the chances of intelligent life developing on some of them are almost guaranteed. However, the universe is a pretty damn big place, and timespans are pretty damn long too.. so, the chances of there being a intelligent alien species somewhere close enough for us to contact (hell, even if we manange to design some kind of super-hyperdrive-ftl-thingamabobs one of these days), and living at the same time as us, are very very small.
Think about it.. mankind is, what, a hundred thousand years old? Whereas the universe is ten billion years old (or thereabouts)? That means we've been, as a species, here for 0.001% of the time. And we've been spaceborne (in very limited amounts) for 50 years or so? That's 0.0000005% of the time. The chances of a alien race having they're "moment in the sun" so to speak, and relatively close to us (hell, in the same galaxy as us) are tiny. ------------------------- Sigs are for noobs. |

I am stunned that people keep saying this. it used to be that there is no other intelligent life and now it is if there was, they no longer exist or will exist after we die as a species. It is like a finely aged arrogance. After several recent looks into planets that support life they have found that on average 1 out of every 2 solar systems have at least one planet that can support life. now, that brings the numbers up quite a bit. that gives plenty of opportunities, and besides, who said any intelligent life would all die off? my opinion, Man kind is not intelligent life because we keep killing each other. Currently we are just intelligent animals. we probably look like chimps to the true intelligent life out there.
but hey, my 2 cents. if you don't want it, drop it in the homeless guys cup. -=#=- Angry beer bottles make Kaemonn a sad panda

As a race we humans have pretty much everything going against us. If the human race is to survive deep into the future we have many many obstacles to overcome.
Disease: The evolution and mutations of viruses like to make a mockery of our technology. Experts predict another flu pandemic within your lifetime.
War: Well lets not get into polotics but we as a human race are an unethical lot that hold little regard for our fellow man. Mans nature for self destruction is something we have to grow out of.
Resources: Our little planet relies on some very limited resources. How long before the oilfields begin to dry up? How many wars will be fought to control those dwindling supplies?
Genetics: Like many species before us, it is possible that our genetic code and adaptability will hit a dead end. The world around us (read disease) will begin leap frogging ahead of us.
Climate: Should the world's climate shift in an extreme direction. The world would be thrown into chaos.
Miscullanous: Gamma Ray Bursts, Meteors, Fungaloids from Fungal Prime, The Presence (see nine inch nails) and most importantly all the other odds and sods that populate this universe that have there unflinching sights set on our complete annihilation.
The only weapons we truly have is our intelligence, imagination and ingenueity. Wether this will be enough to combat everything the universe throws at us, well time will tell. Rather bleakly it has been pointed out in this thread that our intelligence is as nothing compared to the species that may populate this universe. As a race i would agree with that. However we are lucky enough to have within our ranks those enlightened enough to helps us take steps towards a fuller understanding of ourselves and the reality we inhabit.
p.s. If you want to read about what the human race could be in the future as an indestructible race. Read Greg Egan's 'Diaspora' Tis an awesome story the ending always leaves a shiver up my spine.

The bit in bold is what really important imo, because despite the ideology of 'Two minds are better than one' and 'many minds are better than two', our scientific, technological and organisational development has been influenced by an incredibly intelligent few, a very small percentage of the population.
Without people like Einstein, Elisha Gray, Brunell ect. we would still be very backward indeed, I mean that unsung hero that invented the wheel !

You forget about all the Einsteins of the cottonfields. That meaning that there are many with the ability that never reach their full potential because they're not favored by the current regime. The elitist notion that only a few are able is a sickening one which in itself help prevent even further technological advances due to snobbism within the scientific community.

Why is it we consider the scientists the bastions our intelligence and hope? I don't really see them doing a lot to solve world hunger, war, social inequality and racism. and what makes this period in human history anymore evolved than other periods, eg the Enlightenment, 14C Spain? I personally think we have a false sense of our evolution as a species, and in fact this is one of the lower periods in human history we are living through.

Depends on what kind of scientists you are talking about. I see geneticists making genetically engineered fruit, vegetables, and livestock to make them grow quicker, healthier and yield more food. You have the military scientists working towards non lethal alternatives to prevent the need for killing on the battlefield. You do have a point with the social inequality and racism, but that is not really their field. I do believe scientists benefit us and tend to be key to the evolution and preservation of the human mind and to a degree the human race. And yes scientists tend to be the bastions of our intelligence in the particular fields they work in, and would tend to think almost overall seems how your have incompetent and corrupt politicians and corporate CEO's nowadays. If you want to tell me the average guy is the bastion of human intelligence, I will kindly disagree, but if you want to say that a car mechanic is the housing of the human intelligence when it comes to car repair, go right ahead and I will agree. -=#=- Angry beer bottles make Kaemonn a sad panda

It's a known fact that the only aliens out there are intelligent apes who keep humans as slaves.
These apes were encountered some time ago when astronauts crashed on their planet and you did it! You finally did it! Damn you all to hell!

I'm not so sure Monsanto's work to monopolize animal and vegetable dna counts as humanitarian I'm not even going to go near your comment on military scientists, that's just pure flame bait
My point basically was that i don't think we are anymore advanced than at other points in history. We may be able to go to the moon, but we are complete failures with regard to advancing ourselves/community/country/world as a whole. I raised those 2 periods as illustration of places/times that have had significant scientific and philosophical development that rivals if not surpasses our own. i tend to think we think we are more advanced, and are continuing to advance. I'm not so sure about that....

We are more technologically advanced. Wether we as a race have grown with our technology is up for debate.
Personally I think you are wrong. It's easy to pick cultures during there particular golden age but if you choose any point along the human races timeline and show me a more advanced, peaceful, understanding and tolerant race i'll have a double think on the matter.
Fact is scientist have aided the cultural development of the human race. My Uncle works as a geneticist in Brazil. He's has been working on many projects with the aim of being able to grow sustainable crops in the most horrible conditions in Africa. I can only imagine what a difference it would make if he and many others like him were successful.

I'd suggest 14C Spain for the advanced/tolerant. Didn't last of course the Christians invaded
While there are obvious benefits to your uncles work, i question the bigger picture wherein such research is required, and whether the billions invested would be better spent elsewhere.
If Africa hadn't been raped of all its resources, consequently indebted and mauled by the World Bank/IMF and dictators alike, research of that type wouldn't be necessary in the most. Furthermore if you look at a lot of advances in drug tech. e.g AIDS, the drugs are not made available at a cost for those who would most benefit them, resulting in needless suffering and deaths. You can hardly call it aiding cultural advancement. To explain how crazy all of this is, currently Monsanto is doing its best to patent pigs dna What I'm saying in a nutshell is that a great deal of research is in aid of keeping things as they are. It may have the guise of the humanitarian, buts its long term is certainly not. It is about continuing domination. What's more I have yet to see that the long term benefits of genetically modified anything is good for us or the environment.
In a nutshell, I don't think we are anywhere near a golden age, in fact I tend to think we are pretty much wallowing in our own doo-doos atm.

Edited by: superscarface on 09/05/2007 12:21:46 I think every day we move a step closer. There is always a tendancy to look back to the "golden age of the past"; people are constantly doing it in their own lives, thinking about what they had and how much better things were. But this is a mistake, I don't believe that we have ever been more educated or enlightened that we are right now. The mere existance of this thread proves it. In fact, I would say that the last 10 years have seen an incredible evolution in our access to and use for information: The internet.
Sure, we might have all turned into Internet gaming, **** socking, pizza ordering couch slobs. But the barriers between different cultures and races have all but been obliterated in the process. Our only obstacle right now is language.
I'm optemistic. And if you ever want to know what science can do for mankind, take this man as an example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Borlaug
