Eagle is by far best tanking ship ingame (does ****e damage, but we're talking tanking).
Can fit a gist x-type booster and run it forever, alongside hardeners and an invulner. The sig radius makes a massive difference.

Well a drake will tank better than any other T1 ship, BS included.
So I've gotta assume it's the vulture since it can tank even better again

Its the maesltrom with a capital shield Booster. Nothing else comes close to it. Even on Tuxford original description of the maesltrom when it was anounced "The most powerful tank of all non capital ships"
The rokh Comes very close to it in realistic fitting but it cannot make the ridiculows capital shield booster fitings.

I would have to say abaddon as well, With good skills you can have all resists between 85-90% with t2 gear. And 3 nano pumps and and 2 lar II's and you wont be solo ganked by anyone anytime soon. Now this all doesn't matter hen its blob wars and your 400mil battleship is called primary

Drake has a nice passive shield tank, but the damage output of hte missiles is quite low - when you are used to blasters. Vulture has an impressive passive shield tank, but the damage output is even worse. For me, the best tank-gank ship (with an sustainable, not-nossed) tank is the Astarte. Dual Corpum reppers with adaptive membranes. Holds most missions without changing the configuration and the damage output is not just a wet towel's one.

Originally by: Nicholai Thomasovich Nighthawk is a bit better passive tank than the Vulture due to the extra low slot.
Hahah! No
Vulture is best non-capital tank in game. as it can keep on tanking forever. Aure. theoreticly a mealstrom with a capital booster is awsome. still its theory. cant keep the tank running aka its dead prety soon. Also the vulture got higher resists than nighthawk.
A passive vulture though cant be killed solo. it realy is like that. i fly an active one. and only thing that has broken my crapp faction active tank was a NOS-domi (curse couldnt, killed him first)a Passive one cant be broken 1v1. so you can just sit there all day waiting for your backup to arrive.
Works same in taking first agro in breaking a gate camp. just jump in first and uncloak, gives your gang mates a extra min or 2 to kill everything else.
So, best tank in theory: Mealstrom w/ captial booster (in damage tanked) best tank with a use and that doesnt gimp the ship into oblivion : Hp-tanked Vulture best tank for a ship that can accualy kill something else: Hype/abbadon
Originally by: Tuxford Speed is fun and all but this is getting silly, yes we are addressing it, yes I have a blog coming about it.

The criteria really is a bit loose but there is one thing all these armour tanking folks are ignoring (well they are speculating not really thinking it through).
Nano pumps do not stack, also for for all those hype pilots out there amarr are the ultimate armour tankers, resists are far, far more important than the amount you can rep.
High resist = less repping = lower cap use which in turn means you have more cap for hardeners.
Abadon with bs v the abadons lowest resist is 45, it does lack the rep bonus of the hype but it has an additional lowslot, higher resists, more cap. In short it's a beast, provided you don't attempt to stack nano pumps, it's tank is incredable. Incidently an archon with a chelm tank has resists 94/99, an abadon hovers around 90 with tii, if money was no object and you threw those on the bs, you'd be pushing a carriers tank

Ironicly, I read people in here talking of the drake? In what way would the drake tank better than other ships? As for active tanks, rokh or even better Maelstrom? As for passive, how about... um.. myrmid?
And I still dont understand everyone even considering armortanks. Looking at the figures I mentioned earlier, the maelstrom will tank about 5000 dps at its lowest resist. Now that would mean the abaddon your talking about would need(presuming 90% in all resists, wich I'd really like to see you achieve). You would need to have 5625 repped every cycle(before implants, with rep systems V). Meaning 3 corpus x-type reps, with 3 auxs(will end up at a little less than 5625 probably compensated by the rep time implant).
Now, do show me how to sustain that cap level? And how to reach 90% omniresist with 4 low slots left...
The maelstrom is the king of tanks, if you want it sustainable - XL booster, if you want max out - capital booster.

All the new BSs have the tanking potential, I'd say the mealstrom (sp?) or hyperion wins tho. The vulture can tank pretty nicely too :) ------------

Here are a couple of very expensive Myrmidon passive shield tank setups. It assumes shield management and shield operation skills at 5:
Highs: Whatever you want - probably NOS or projectile weapons
Mids: Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Estamel's Modified Invulnerability Field
Lows: Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Power Diagnostic System II
Rigs : Core Defence Field Purger II \ Core Defence Field Purger II \ Core Defence Field Purger II \
Implants: +5% shield hp and -5% shield recharge time implants
Shield HP: 19853.27 Shield Regen Time: 87.17 Avg. Regen/sec: 227.75 Peak Regen/sec: 569.38 Resists & Tankable DPS EM = 50.00% = 1139 tankable DPS EX = 80.00% = 2847 tankable DPS KI = 70.00% = 1898 tankable DPS TH = 60.00% = 1423 tankable DPS Average = 1827 tankable DPS
With capacitor skills at 5 it regens 3.92 cap/s at peak and uses 3.33 cap/s running the one invuln field, so it could run this for forever, as long as it wasn't being NOS'd.
If you don't care about cap issues (ie: you're willing to have to fit a NOS in your uppers and suck off your enemey's cap) then you can do this:
Highs: Medium Nosferatu I Whatever you want - probably more NOS or projectile weapons
Mids: Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Large Shield Extender II Estamel's Modified Invulnerability Field Estamel's Modified Invulnerability Field
Lows: Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II Shield Power Relay II
Rigs : Core Defence Field Purger II \ Core Defence Field Purger II \ Core Defence Field Purger II \
Implants: +5% shield hp and -5% shield recharge time implants
Shield HP: 15462.56 Shield Regen Time: 72.4 Avg. Regen/sec: 213.57 Peak Regen/sec: 533.93 Resists & Tankable DPS EM = 71.73% = 1889 tankable DPS EX = 88.69% = 4721 tankable DPS KI = 83.04% = 3148 tankable DPS TH = 77.38% = 2360 tankable DPS Average = 3030 tankable DPS
With capacitor skills at 5 it regens 2.53 cap/s at peak, plus 5/sec from a medium NOS gives 7.53 total regen at peak. It uses 6.667/s running both invuln fields, so it can run for as long as you can suck energy from your opponent.
WredStorm ----- Think out of the box, consider passive shield tanking your Myrmidon, you'll be pleasantly surprised! |

you can do exaclty the same with maelstrom, but with a free 37.5% bonus that is not stack nerfed against Amplifiers. And maesltrom is more good looking (not to say faaar cheaper)! The extra HP from the ratle is not enough to counter this.

Edited by: Kagura Nikon on 08/05/2007 15:56:42 That is where you are mistaken. Passive tanks have their weak spot on the fact that your regeneration is ghood form 30% to 70 % shields.
That means... you have 6400 shield of real buffer. Don knwo what yourresists are, but quite some ships are able to cross that boundary in 1 mega alpha strike hit (depend on your resists). (also do not ever beleive a passive tanked ships will be able to run its hardeners.. most enemies will make you shut it down in 1 cycle.
So for example 2 tempests with 1400 MM guns even having each one very low DPS .. they can break your tank.

Since people put ridiculowsly officer fitted drakes and myrmidons as tanks here. I will post something to eat that passive tanks.
Maesltrom
8x Shakil's Modified 1400MM 1 REactor Controll II 4xShakil's Modified Gyrostablizer 1 PCA II
5% Large proj implant 5% turret implant 4Sentry
this delivers 9344 damage in 1 volley with rate of fire of about 8 seconds..... not very high long run dps (1150 dps )..wella t leats not so uber. But simply its alpha would cross any uber passive tank like butter.

Edited by: welsh wizard on 08/05/2007 17:05:40 The problem with the Myrmidon passive tank is hitpoints. Get 2 gank battleships on it with 2000 shield and they'll be hitting armour with every volley.
Drake is in practice a much better passive tank as it can passive tank with masses of hitpoints.
1v1 or even 1v2 against low damage ships and it far surpasses the Drake with its very short recharge time but if you have a gang of any size shooting you its hitpoints won't last 2 seconds.
Now onto the "best non-capital tank in the game" subject. A Maelstrom can boost ridiculous amounts of hp with faction equipment and crystal implants but it is still a tech I ship. It's resists are horrendous. It won't last aslong as Vulture using similar equipment, not a chance, it just takes too much raw damage.
This is of course my opinion but I'm pretty confident that a Vulture can fit the hardest active and passive tank in the game if its done right. (In terms of staying alive longer than anything else)

I might have misunderstood the question, but, I thought you asked about what ship could tank best? IE negate most dps?
In that case... buffert means nothing. Yes, if youre looking for the ship being able to "tank" a DDD, thats a different matter, as theres no point in repping up etc. And tank most suitable for combat is yet another question, mostly as shieldtanks take midslots etc.
If youre talking about plain surviving, nothing will beat the covert ops anyway. Or anything docked ofc. Heck you could even say the claw got the best tank, as it does have the best speedtank.
However, IF youre talking about raw dps tanked, I'd like to see any one of you folks who are suggesting caldari commandships, faction ships and for the love of god, even battlecruisers(!) spit out numbers that are even near what I mentioned earlier. Just give me a single ship, setup or whatever that goes even near 5k damage tanked per second, on its worst resist. Break 3k on that battlecruiser of yours and im impressed. Oh, and ofc the tank should be sustainable.
Seriously people, this thread is making me scared.

Couple of heavy nos or medium nos on a Curse/Pilgrim and you're boned, you'll go down far faster than a Vulture. Coming across a pvp situation where you're tanking a gang and there is no nos must be practically unheard of these days.
Hypothetical 'no cap drain' pvp gang tanking situation and you're probably right.

So 8% less armor repaired overall, and 23.8% less contribution from the nano-pumps due to the stacking penalty.
