One of my alts was recently killed in a shuttle moving something very valuable. The pirates that killed me were using a battleship sitting roughly 6k or so off the gate that I was on my way to. Their battleship was in alignment with the gate that I was warping from.
Apparently when they see the shuttle show up on scanner they activate loads of smartbombs on this battleship; shuttle pops before you even drop out of warp and pod usually insta pops as well.
No matter what ship you are moving your valuable possession in make sure you scout it first.
Having even a small amount of tank can get you through the situation I just described. But the pirates can always position more smart bombing battleships to blow up more heavily tanked ships.
Lesson of the day: scout scout scout. Also: ----> *don't transport stuff in things that can insta-pop* <----
Some of you knew about this crap already but some of you didn't. Consider yourself Warned..... |

Keep in mind mates... I'm not complaining, I'm just trying to warn everyone. Carry on with it.
To give everyone a bit more info: The exact spot where I was killed (and where they are camping pretty much every day) was on the Novokaiken (spelling?) gate IN Tama.
I repeat: IN Tama on the Novokaiken gate.

Edited by: Spillen on 12/05/2007 00:50:16 Lol it would be really lame if CCP did boost shuttles' hp or something. They won't of course (and they shouldn't) but it would be stupid.
I'm just trying to warn my fellow *rich* eve players. The *poor* pirates are really getting insane with the tactics.
Don't hate the pirates though guys. I mean c'mon, half of them are probably hurting for isk really badly. I give them props for figuring out a way to get a piece of some serious isk. I can only imagine what they've gained by using this tactic. Even further, I can only imagine what has been destroyed using this tactic.

I ran into a camp in Amamake today that was smartbombing. Being in a shuttle and seeing the ships appear on the scanner didn't exactly make me happy.
But... by spamming the jump button I actually managed to survive. I don't know how exactly. The timing of the smartbombs must have been just right for me. Poor shuttle had 21% armor left, so I think I took two hits.
I'm so never taking that way to Rens again when the map shows "just" 9 kills in the last hour, heh.

Well, this helped me, so I guess I did need the warning; but I'm still fairly new. Funny, I JUST finished carrying a bunch of researched BPOS through lowsec back to my base, because I thought it was "Safe." Bah, silly me, nothing in this game is safe, that's what makes it fun! :) Thanks for the warning, I will start working immediately to circumvent this.

You're not a terribly bright one, are you?
Let's dumb it down a shade, hoepfully so you can keep up.
At no point in my post did I state or imply that I am richer than anyone, in fact I made it pretty clear that I know I'm not overly wealthy, I am however extremely far from being poor. As for GTC's, I don't sell GTC's, in fact I buy them with isk, 3 every 3 months. The majority of it was earned through pirating, yes.
And I've never flown a nanophoon, in fact I can't even fly battleships (at least not on this character, my main is actually a very uber blasterthron pilot, but that's neither here nor there), I fly a frigate most the time because I have cruiser 3 and medium projectile 2
You're simply the bottom of the bucket as far as carebear scum goes. In one simple sentence you took this thread from a very commendable warning and a damned respectable attitude to the same 'well i have more isk' bull**** we have to listen to every day from random carebears we pod for a laugh. So yes, you disgust me.
And by the way, I rule you.

You have a great respect for DE cause he's a forum ***** and he's always trying to be all noble in the forums.
Who said I'm trying to take the morale highground? I'm not concerning myself with such theories as morality for the moment mate.
What makes you say I don't understand how smartbombing battleships are done? I'm a lot of things but dumb is not one of them mate, let me explain:
BS loaded with smart bombs sits *more* than 5k off a gate while being in alignment with another gate in the system that gets plenty of traffic to the gate that you're sitting on. As small things warp to the gate you're sitting on, you see them coming on scanner (which is set to an appropriate range for the task) and you activate all smart bombs (perhaps there is a bit of timing to get good at here). Shuttles and frigs (even t2 frigs ladies and gents) pop before they drop out of warp and the pods probably pop quite often as well. For maximum effect you could probably use 2X's smart bomb battleships and pop haulers as long as they don't have extenders/plates. Also for maximum effect you could put a cloaked alt on the other side of the 'source' gate to know exactly when shuttles/frigs etc are gonna be warping in. This would be to avoid having to spam the scan button constantly . My guess is you also put warp core stabs on these smart bomb ships as they don't need to lock anything nor will they be able to defend the gate camp if you should come under attack by another gang.
I think that about sums it up. Let me know if you still think I don't understand. Congrats on getting me to explain in greater detail *how* to do a smart bomb gate camp. I'm sure that the pirates that are in-the-know about this tactic are loving it.
And please people don't act like omg this tactic has been around for ages spillen etc because the fact is that many people that fall victim to this tactic NEVER figure out what exactly happened to them.

And to think I accused you of being something other than a 1337 pirate who actually makes his isk pirating...
That was many months ago before I started pirating with my main and a personal army of alts. I don't think I've run a mission or done anything but kill people in eve since..... hell, couple weeks or a month before I made that movie.
And by the way, I rule you.

Oh. Well then, sarcasm aside, perhaps you really are a good pirate. But why no battleship? Do you only belt hunt? No gate camping? Seems to me that some of the best loot in the game might be most vulnerable while on its way to Jita or something. I'm sure belt hunting is much much more exciting though.
Yes my goal is to cover you in jelly. I will then place you between two slices of bread and nuke you. Nuked pirate 'n' jelly sandwich.

I take it the OP doesn't read the forums - otherwise they would have known about this already.

I would have spent time training this character were he not on my main's account, so training to be good for something more than stalking belts isn't really in my best interest when I can just switch characters. But I have multiple accounts now, so I'm much more flexible in what I use to gank people. Think of this character as cheap thrils, compared to using another character with ruthless efficiency. Kinda like taking the scenic route.
Speaking of Jita, I've played the suicide high sec ganking before, untanked sigil + 200 T2 shield hardeners (pre-invention) + 3 caracals with cargo scanner = pay day Fact is there's a lot of ways to make isk pirating, be it at gates, high sec, or even roaming the belts. e.g I ganked an omen in a belt, that dropped around 40 mil in loot for me, as I was turning to warp out his main warped in his shiney new hyperion, and got himself ransomed for an additional 180 mil (not with this character, I'm good, but not THAT good hehe). Just yesterday I nuked a random noob in a catalyst with my patented rifter of doom that gave me some T2 rails and armor rep, couple mil profit for a few rounds of small projectile ammo.
And just for the record, I thought about it, and my covops alt is quite handy with scan probes and has been known to find me exploration sites (and of course mission runners to gank/ransom), both of which thus far have been quite profitable, though I have to get friends to run the sites as I lack hacking and arch skills on all of my characters (I have not a single industrial character, excluding 2 T1 hauler alts). And while he's doing that I'm usually killing someone on the other screen, but my point remains that the VAST majority of my income is from killing people in low, high, and no sec alike. by the way, does it count as running missions if after ganking Mumbly Joe on his mission I usually finish it?
So fair enough, there is a little spark of carebear in me, but it's pretty damn repressed.
But enough about me, let's get back to the part about covering me in jelly
And by the way, I rule you.

To OP, well, sad that you lsot an expensive item, but if you really wish to keep stuff safe you can easily invest in BC/Cruiser, fit it for max speed with rack of shield extenders and just fly fast thru low-sec if you need to. Stuff of great value like BPO`s and such you really need to move in BS even in hi-sec. Better safe then sorry. ---

Nope, if you say move some faction stuff to auction, Id better do it in a tanked BS. Alot of people would sacrifice their even 150mil ship for say like a billion worth item even if it can be destroyed in process.
Moreover, fitting a quick travel setup for small ship thru low-sec is cheap and under 500k isk I would say, just some nanos and maybe wcs. Maybe Tech 1 shield extenders and such. ---

I don't know T2 shuttles require Spaceship Command 4, it'll be a long train time.

i carry valuable items in a fully officer fitted faction BS. no pirates will want to attack that, right guys?
...right? ...why are you locking me?
OP: carry valuable stuff in a shuttle by all means, but have a scout. surely a corpmate will be able to make time if it's something expensive?
