Edited by: GM Abraxas on 10/10/2004 12:40:52 If you're having problems with the "Connections" skill, you may find the following of interest. I'm open to corrections on any of this, and will try to update the thread if anything changes.
- If you haven't done any work for the entity, Connections doesn't kick in. Thus, if you have a pure 0.0 standing with something, it remains 0.0. Any change, no matter how small, should change this. So if you want Connections to kick in for corporation X, do one mission for a lvl 1 agent in that corp.
- While Connections gives a boost to all NPC standings, remember that you can not get a Research agent through his personal standing alone. You also have to have a certain minimum standing with his corporation. That minimum is [(agent level-2)*2.0] + [(agent quality*5.0)/100.0].
- Connections does not affect negative standings; Diplomacy does. Connections does not affect your security standing; Fast Talk does.
- Connections does not give you a 0.4 boost. Nor does it give you a pure 4% boost. It gives you a 4% increase of the difference between your standing and the maximum possible (10.0). Thus, if you have 1.0, you will get a (10.0-1.0)*0.04 = 0.36 boost for one level of Connections. If you have 5.0, you will get a (10.0-5.0)*0.04 = 0.2 boost. The higher you go in standings, the less Connections will help. See PapaSmurf's comments for more information.
- For each level of Connections, you get an additional 4% boost of the base amount. For the above example where you have 5.0 in base standing, level 1 of connections gives you (10.0-5.0)*(1*0.04) = 0.2. Level 2 gives you (10.0-5.0)*(2*0.04) = 0.4. Level 3 gives you (10.0-5.0)*(3*0.04) = 0.6.
- Connections has an effect on your agent's Effective Quality, but not nearly as much as Negotiations does. Train the latter if you want to improve the agents you currently have.
(Edit) The formula is like this: Effective Quality = Base Quality + (5*Level of Negotiation) + Effective Standing. The effects of Connections on your Effective Standing is noted above.

*mutter* Suuuuuure...tell me now after training Connections 4 and passing over Negotiations when the corp I'm working for can barely love me any more.
Thanks for the explanation, Abraxas. Can you crosslink this somehow in the Missions subforum?

I'd rather not crosspost this in the Missions forum, but if anyone there decides to write some kind of overview thread that relates to the Social skills, they're more than welcome to link to, reference or quote this thread.

but how much does the negotiation skill help the effective quality?
Abraxas: Can you post the formula here, like you did with the Connections skill?

Would help if they didn't change the UI on standings in the character info window so its not there anymore.
Workaround: Look at your agents info, standings then relationship, that will show your Connections effects (god knows why it was left in that place when it was taken away from probably the more useful character info window!) -------------------------------------------- [2005.02.08 13:58:16] Your Mega Beam Laser II perfectly strikes Sansha's Beast, wrecking for 709.6 damage.

Oh yeah, an addition, why isn't Connections taken into account when using a recycling/reprocessing plant? It would seem to be the same with agents, bribing or talking to the reprocessing guys etc. -------------------------------------------- [2005.02.08 13:58:16] Your Mega Beam Laser II perfectly strikes Sansha's Beast, wrecking for 709.6 damage.

My agent is a babe, I'll be slaving away at missions if this is even a possibility... She has some freaky hair, but my unscrupulous character will do whatever he is asked if it helps raise his standing And here I was beginning to think missions were boring and tedious... Great suggestion GM Abrakas, now implement it!

Edited by: Harisdrop on 13/05/2004 12:34:15 Any news on Criminal Connections, Diplomacy, or Media social skills.
Edited 05/12/04
Diplomacy is still no useful or Media. We have Criminal connections and Fast Talk.
The GM should change his info. Criminal Connections is the skill that allows you to work for negative standing npc corps.
Connections does work before you do a single mission. So you could start a corp you have never worked before. There are many ways to do this with associated corps and such. --------------------------

Quick question: Why was Criminal Connections converted to plain Connections a while back? (like 6 months ago, hehe)
Had an alt that was doing agent missions, for the sole purpose of getting a high pirate rating. Then it got converted one patch, and kinda made the character pointless. ********** Everyone deserves to die. You go first.

Connections and Criminal Connections are two separate skills. I have both.
Or did you mean you had Criminal Connections on your sheet, and it got converted into Connections?

I started working for a new corp over last 2 days and got some annoying things.
1. agents will show as available to you, but that does not mean they actually are.
a. you must still have the proper skills for agents like R&D agents. b. if you have not done any misions for that corp, your connections will not kick in. so while agent seems to be available, he wont be. fine a lowly lvl1 -99 quality agent and run 1 mission.

Edited by: Crook on 18/06/2004 17:16:03 Well - with the new patch this week the indication from my agents is: "Connections Skill is now worthless".
Prior to this new patch, Connections was always displayed as explained in the first GM post here. However, since this patch, my agents ratings for me now display "NOTHING" at all about my Connections level increasing the rating. As a matter of fact, now they all refer to the "DIPLOMACY" skill level affecting my rating.
This is all fine and dandy but, I must tell you: it makes me not feel too good about the 40+ days spent training up the Connections skill only to see it now means absolutely nothing as far as my agents are concerned.
I'm thinking: should I train up the Diplomacy skill? Or will another patch simply make that, also, a waste of skill training time.
This is quite depressing. Sorry!

It looks like the social skills have got their knickers in a twist after the last patch.
Previously connections affected positively all my relationships with corps and factions and agents.
Now it just affects postively my standing with Concord - and is displayed as such directly on my 'liked by' standings menu where none of the rest are...
If Diplomacy is affecting something it shouldn't be then perhaps the skills are just mixed up and are in need of realigning?
