I chose my race based on the descriptions when I got the trial.
Amarr = Enslavers, terrible. Minmatarr = Former enslaved Calderi = Can't remember Gallente = Freedom, truth, justice, and the American way lol
I imagine that's why more people are Gallente, or am I wrong and the balance of players per race are not that unequal.

Actually I'd say more people these days are caldari, simply because theres so many fircken industry alts in the game currently and they've all chosen the best starting path which is caldari. Sig removed as it lacks EVE-related content. Mail [email protected] if you have questions. -Hango

Luckily the Scotch still managed to get beaten despite trying a sneaky attack in the middle of the night, after the English soldiers had been drinking in honour of the king's birthday.
(*) Actually from memory I think they never even made it to the English encampment and were forced to retire half way through the night, and then were too tired to turn up to the battle the next day. LOL.

Amarrians: always struck me as Roman, the whole "enslave everything" ideal, Emperor being all powerful, etc. Minmatar: Goths/Visogoths/Celts/Britons from the Dark Ages, being covered in dirt, generally smelly... Caldari: Cross between German Engineering and Japanese dronism. Gallente: French, overtly French.

The more I read about the Caldari, the more they remind me of the Japanese kiritsus than anything American.

Amarr = enslavers, so no. Minmatar = slaves, and ugly, and duct tape, so no. Gallente = French, and typical democractic nation, so boring Caldari = tough guy looks and muscle? Best choice.
Now that I've had a chance to experience different race's ships, I'm probably more amarr than caldari or anything else. But alas, zee race is final. =====

In those days I did not realise that you could train for any races ships.
If I was to re-roll, I would pick Amarr, Khanid. Cause then you get great perception and willpower.

You are spot on with the Amarr and Minmatar.
I'd say Caldari are more like Earth Alliance, and the Jove are Minbari.
This leaves the Gallente out in the cold.
It also leaves me very scared, if the Jove are Minbari, what do we do when the Vorlons and Shadows turn up?

I chose Gallente because, despite being french in origin, they seemed very American-like. Democracy, feeling the need to try to police space, and of course advertising freedom as their main ideal. The federation is, essentially, America in space. Other then that, I felt like being whatever race would make the best generic Hero and the Gallente seemed the most noble. Of course, now I know more about their background and it's somewhat more apparent that all four races have their vice.

Faction Caldari: I liked the backstory of a militaristic state controlled by industrial megacorporations. Gallente sounded like hippies, minmatar like angry emos, and amarr, I had no clue what they were about.
Bloodline Achura: Wanted a good looking Avatar, and female Achura are between naughty hot and cute. ___

I think you completely missed my point. I associated Americans with diplomacy and and police action, I associated gallente with heroism and being noble. And that was also when i started the game and knew nothing about Gallente then their starting description. Sorry if I did not make that clear. I also admitted all four races have a vice and, guess what? Gallente has MORE vices then the other three.

Then I found out that its not really so much about the passive thing but more about piloting when you fly minmatar... but thats OK since thats fun too. --- Eve Wiki | Eve Tribune |

"Originally of French origins, although any direct similarities have long since vanished, Gallenteans value freedom and individual liberty above all else. The Gallente Federation is the only true democracy in the world of EVE."
I always find it funny when people ignore the above underlined sentence and say "The Gallente are French." In 20,000 years, there wouldn't likely be be anything remotely resembling a national stereotype, French or otherwise.
That said, I chose Minmatar mostly because of the interesting backstory -- freed slaves, relatively new republic trying to recapture something of their former pre-slavery glory, etc. I'm a roleplayer, so it struck me as being something rife with creative possibility. Plus the ships are so frickin' ugly they're almost cool.
I did, however, like the hard-hitting artillery and relatively decent starting speed.
I like the Achura for the stats, but that's about it -- the have a very limited amount of character portrait customization which bugs me. I also have a Khanid character, but I think of him as sort of an outcast to that society. While I can't deny that playing an uber-religious fascist slave owner would be the ultimate roleplaying challenge, I don't think it'd be much fun in the long run. I do like the purty Amarr ships, though. Best looking ships in the game, in my opinion.

ummm to be a racist bigot - one has had to make comments againt a race - which last time i checked neither Canadians nor Americans are - they are countries not Races -
And last time I also checked Canada is a melting pot of races and as Canadians we all get a long a lot better than most places in the world.

American - Psftttttt
I sure hope that not all Canadians are racist bigots like yourself.
I chose Minmatar because they seemed like the underdogs, and despite their sometimes unscrupulous methods, they seemed to be fighting for a just cause.
ummm to be a racist bigot - one has had to make comments againt a race - which last time i checked neither Canadians nor Americans are - they are countries not Races -
And last time I also checked Canada is a melting pot of races and as Canadians we all get a long a lot better than most places in the world.
So sir dont call me a racist bigot, when apparently you dont know the meaning of the term.

I picked Gallente as it in retail was the ones who stood for freedom (not freedom fighters)
(I roughly remember the retail manual said something along the lines of this)
Amarr = Portuguese, Spanish and American (North and South America combined?) Minmatar = Africans Caldari = USSR/Chinese but post communism Gallente = French in origin (mostly in terms of laws) but based upon the general French/northern European way of life. Most fair law systems in the current world is based upon the French court system btw.
I also remember that the reason for 4 factions was that they were the dominant faction on earth and they all went through the gate before it collapsed, but before they were self reliant and needed supplies from Earth (and it's galaxy).

For arguement's sake, and for the sake of keeping politics down to a dullwitted roar, think of Gallente democracy in the sense of being a stand in for Western Civilization as a gestalt. Its form and function would seem to be quite American, with its centralized government, directly elected executive office, with a very Euro flavor in the sense that its "states" are more politically independent entities than the American states are.

Ah, so Caldari as a faction admit to being openly *** and mainly populated by *****suckers? Good for them. (While I hate to use *** as it is so frequently used by the "Whatever Generation" I could not pass up the comment.)
I chose to go Gal Fed as it came across as harboring the most personal freedom and as the most hedonistic of the groups. There are other reasons I passed on the other factions but I will just pass on the whys and wherefores.

It's odd that people compare the US to gallente or caldari, personally I find them neither, but I wont say why so i dont spark political ire.
I chose Caldari because of a couple reasons. A) They've got the smallest, but arguably the most powerful navy. B) They're a breakaway state (fought for independance) C) They're a fairly regimented + disciplined society. D) Deteis Avatars rock Improve Market Competition! |

The US has a very decentralised political system. Yes there is a unified foreign policy but internaly the states control alot. If anything the Gallente strike me as being far more gilded age US than anything remotely European. After all the Gallente are a decentralised democracy with a very free market. They have a vast disparity between the rich and the poor. They do not have a social saftey net . They prize individual liberty above everything else that is more an American thing than a European thing. The Caldari on the other hand are clearly Japan.

First chara - Minmatar, because of some RP idea I can't even remember anymore Second chara - Gallente, because the minmatar ships were so ugly Thir chara (this) - Amarr, finally found the best looking ships around! Fourth (most recent alt) - Caldari, because of PvE, farm isk for me while the others can focus on PvP
- all of them combat pilots -
Looks of ships > everything else. The one and only reason to choose Amarr. :) --- bring back the pvp to EVE --- Remove local, remove all non-dictor bubbles, remove capital ships, re-move the hp boost and put 'nos hardpoints' (0-1 on non-amarrian ships, 1 on amarr ships, 3 on |

I choose Sebiestor / Minmatar because I liked their background story.
The underdogs, with the sebiestors excelling at engineering.
The fortunes of the Minmatars have ebbed and flowed continuously. At one time they had a flourishing empire with a level of mechanical excellence never before or since seen anywhere.
A tough, no-nonsense race, the Minmatars are a determined and independent people.
For the Minmatars, the most important thing in life is to be able to take care of yourself on your own, and although kin and family play an important role in their society, they prefer identifying themselves by the clan or tribe to which they belong.
The Sebiestor tribe hails from the inhospitable steppes of the Mikramurka continent in the northern artic region on Matar. The Sebiestors are the most technically inclined of the Minmatar tribes and were at the forefront in the tentative space exploration program the Minmatars were undertaking just before the Amarrians arrived. Today, most of the Minmatar ships and stations are engineered by Sebiestors.
The Sebiestors are technically and mechanically inclined, most Minmatar technology comes from them. The Sebiestors have always been the leading tribe in the Minmatar Republic.
I'm a sucker for mechanical engineering ( I study it IRL ) and thought the Sebiestor would be the most fitting for me. When I started the game I thought I could research variations of modules ( tech 3 might bring this ). Also the whole previous enslavement thing is something I liked to play with from a RP perspective.

With no moral hindrances to obstruct their path. Essentially, I saw this as an ideal race to build characters around. I look forward to doing just that. ______________________________________________ "The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low, and we achieve it." --Michaelangelo

well, Technologically advanced and evil ruthless ruling with loyal and hard working citizens.
(btw, Gallente are more like the US. they have 1 "elected" leader. and try to force their "freedom" onto other civilisations, like they tried on the Caldari and Minmatar. the Caldari fought back, the Minmatar found an ally to free them from the Amarr. the Gallente haven't attacked the Amarr YET because they have enough trouble with the Caldari State.)

Edited by: Cipher7 on 15/05/2007 02:21:35 My first character was a Caldari, and I love that race except Caldari space is freakin overcrowded and you can never find a place to do a mission without 80 people being in local.
If I had to choose my attitude in RL, it would be Caldari, basically I'm a libertarian capitalist, my attitude is "take your politics, social issues and religion and shove it. Let the market be free, let people trade with each other, let them work hard and make the cheddar, regardless of race, religion, sex, etc. No racism, no affirmative action, no perks, no reparations, just a totally free market with minimal taxes. If someone wants to buy coke and be a junkie, that's their life, when they run out of money they can die in a gutter, they chose their path. You believe Jesus is Lord? Awesome, I'm happy you found the truth, keep it to yourself because I don't really wanna hear it."
In the end I had to go with Minmatar.
Caldari - As I said too crowded, but awesome backstory.
Gallente - Too liberal. Plus the stations all look like shopping malls. Oh yeah, that makes you feel like a real tough guy, sit in your battlecruiser in the middle of Wal Mart.
Minmatar - Excellent backstory, tribalism is pretty cool, cool portraits, the ships have sails, and they are pretty capitalist/libertarian just like the Caldari. I bet you can get drugs/guns anywhere in Minnie space without any problems. The stations look cool. Arty is cool. Autocannons are cool. Overall its just a sexy race.
Amarr - Romans. Very cool concept. I love the curved beak thing. The race overall is sexy as hell. The Providence freighter is the sexiest ship I have ever beheld.

Amarr: Yeah, their ships are purdy. Green and glisteningà But they are oppressors and enslavers. Furthermore they are religious fanatics, which to me reads "no sex".
Caldari: Concrete grey, oddly shaped bricks of ships. They seem to have odd stuff poking out of their backs and their males are often bald. Not because of any abundance of testosterone - they just have no hair.
Gallente: They've gone with the "organic look" on their ships. Their best battleship looks like a blow dryer. They are French, with an optional moustache. I think the latter goes for their women too.
Minmatar: It's about rust. It's about duct tape. It's about speed, and guns that go RA-TA-TA-TA or BOOOM! They are formerly enslaved, tribal, freedom fighters. They have muscles. They're in pitch black space, ready to engage in a fight, and they are wearing shades. Their chicks wear leather.
Guess what race I picked.

Amarr are a bunch of religious zealots who practiced and still practice slavery. No problem with the latter but i didn't like the former. :) Minmatar are so backwards that they still improvise their way to capitals and supercapitals with rust, duct tape and many many many frigs stuck together. :) Caldari have no liberty to speak off, they belong to the state which can choose to scr*w them over whenever it feels like it. No problem here unless you are part of the leadership. :)

I thought that is Caldari (Corporate run society) for the Northern US States and Amarr (Religion run society) for the Southern US States? Unless you are talking about the Canadians being Gallente (They are on the continent of North America and technically Americans)
That's like saying scottish people are technically english.
no it's like saying: it's like saying the french are european. it's like saying people from kenya are african. it's like saying people from brazil are south american. it's... well you get the point
he's right, canadian's are american, since america is a continent, and their country is ON that continent.
btw, OP, Gallente are french, their name even looks/sounds french. the caldari state is the USA - it's heavily industrial, corporate run, belligerant and nationalistic. Ammarr and Minmatar are hard to pin down to a specific nation - which is probably a good thing given the part of their respective storylines in which they are involved with one another - one race subjugation and enslaving the other, i don't suppose implying a modern real-world equivilant would be very PC :P ========================================== Iy |

I specifically did not choose Minmatar because I felt that the whole "Freedom is sooo great" etc etc was really quite boring, very American and just not what I believed in. Not saying I'm "anti-freedom" and yes I do appreciate the sacrifices of my grandparents generation. But overtly trying to ram it down ppl's throats just doesn't suit me.
I actually thought more ppl would choose Minmatar and Gallente than seem to have for those reasons, and i'm disappointed that Caldari seem to be totally ubiquitous.
I nearly chose Gallente because I thought it might be fun to play as a froggie, but Caldari was where I wanted to be really, so I made my main Caldari and never looked back

What actually makes the most people pick caldari is probably that they are the most caucasian-looking. And since blood the achura stats for alts.
And of course they have the most 'tough guy' looking characters in civire males that just allures to a certain type of player I don't care for much. I know this kind of generalization is usually a bad idea, but my personal experience is that a significant majority of the most immature, chaotic, obnoxious and incompetent ganktards I come across are civire male, and thus I view the whole bunch of them with suspicion and disdain ;) -

Amarr vs Minmatar cliche mudslinging was deemed neverending and insufferable.
Caldari have 'bountyhunter' printed on the box, or was it manual, that's a big scareword to anyone wanting to surround themselves with sentient lifeforms.
So gallente wasn't an active choice, it was the only option left open really.
In retrospect one could say I had nothing to fear but fear itself but stereotypes has proven to hold true, no thanks to my own efforts.

I thought that is Caldari (Corporate run society) for the Northern US States and Amarr (Religion run society) for the Southern US States? Unless you are talking about the Canadians being Gallente (They are on the continent of North America and technically Americans)
That's like saying scottish people are technically english.
I do hope somebody corrected this.

When I picked my race I knew nothing about what races were associated with what traits except for the short description in the character creation dialog. I picked Caldari because - AFAIR - they were decribed as a military and disciplined people. And since I assumed that I'd be fighting quite a bit, I thought that sounded like a good race to pick.

This character was Amarr because I like the ships. They're pretty... and lasers are pretty too.
My Caldari character (primary acct) was chosen because I thought that's what I was during Beta. Come to find out, I was Gallente in Beta. So... the Caldari char is now an industry character. _______________________________________________

My primary is Intaki - at the time i wanted to be an industrialist and looked up needed attributes: Industry needs high Mem and Int as secondary... Intaki had +4 to Mem - so there i was, a new playwer with very high Mem and Int stats, and... well, 3 in Perception. At the time i only planned to train to fly one ship - Covetor. Since, i've trained enough to fly Carriers, but it was a long path to glory.
About a month later i realized, that my development as a miner what somewhat slow due to not being able to access high-end asteroids in empire and lacking combat proficiency to effectively do... well, anything. So i registered my second account and my Achura alt was born! High every stats except for charisma and hey, that guy wasn't supposed to be liked anyhow - he was there to KEEL people that picked on my miner!
As time went by, there came a need for a fighting character that wasn't so utterly disliked by so many people... so this guy came around. This was carefully calculated in attributes, purchased +5 implants form the get go, EVEMon planned character... that i hope will stick to my 968 days dev plan even though EVEMon is not up to guide him every step of the way.

No it's not (unless England is a continent). It's like saying Scottish people are European, which they are. Canadians are indeed North Americans. People from Chile are South Americans. They are all Americans cause they are from the Americas.
Regarding the subject: This char is an alt of course but I will say this,
-Amarr is the most underrated race in game atm. -Caldari is the second most underrated race in game atm. (for pvp) -Gallente is the most overrated race in game. -Minmatar have ugly ships. (the new ones are cool though)

I picked Minmatar because I am a speed freak. I would constantly be looking for parts of my ship that I could replace with duck tape so I could lose weight and gain speed. I would store my ammo in Tupperware, replace doors with shower curtains, put lawnchairs on the bridge, anything to shave that last few tons off.
Also, they seem like the kind of people who would head straight for the nearest pub after a fight and sing songs about the glories of battle and fallen comrades while getting completely trashed. Much like the Celts. Or Klingons.

Amarr: Slavery Caldari: Greed Minmater: Wrath Gallente: Lust, alcohol, drugs, etc.
I find it funny that someone actually associates Americans with heroism and nobility, while labelling another of the races greedy... But I digress, we don't want this turning political, yes?
Umm... it looks like they are associated with lust, alcohol, drugs, etc. but whatever. He never said that Americans are heroic and noble, he said he wanted to be the race that seemed the most heroic. He said that Americans feel the need to police the world. But I guess I can read and others need glasses

I picked Caldari/Deteis mainly because of the avatar looks. And because the Caldari race pick looked so fascist ... tough dude giving the one thousand yard stare, with infantry squares marching beneath him while some Helga with a big-ass gun is giving you an angry look.
Later as I learned more about the game I also figured that I liked the Caldari focus : shields feel more advanced than armor missiles rock and who doesn't like railguns ?
Main problem was that most ships look like complete crap, but the Caracal, Ferox, Drake and Rokh make up for it.

Because even though amarrians get shrouded in a bad perspective and a lot of them are crazed devotees it is mostly just a front for being universal bad ass' that are going to take what they want. I started out a minmatar because they were the underdogs but at some point I figured I'd pick up the skills to be that badass and lasers with shiney ships just sounded appealing.
Little did I know, I wanted to do more than shoot stuff all the time, now I wish I would of put a little more time into looking at the racial specific ship types and their benefits vs drawbacks.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The moment you are either a) a true democracy or b) A shining example of freedom, then I will retract the statement.
As was noted in a prior post, you are a republic, which is different. Democracies don't work with the populations currently in the world. Imagine having a referendum on /every/ single topic, from major issues like the age a person can drive/drink/smoke to the insiginificant issues (in the bigger picture) of the changes to fees for the price of housing in a single neighbourhood. It'd collapse under the weight of paperwork in a week.
However, I chose my race based upon theme as well. The Caldari have shields, missiles, as any modern warfare analyst will tell you are superior to guns in battle, ECM (which they alone are able to use at stronger than RMR capability, Rooks manage it... Just.) And they use GRAVIMETRIC detection. Now that's just awesome. As anyone who has ever read Asimov will tell you. Gravimetric ships rule.
The Caldari are so very very japanese. Zaibatsu in fact. Have a look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zaibatsu Minmatar are liberated slaves... Oh joy. What wonderful fun. Amarr... So tempting. For the record, they are the descendants, and maintain the beliefs, if not the culture of a radical christian sect. Watch the intro again before you talk about the middle east. Gallente. French. Although, I can't blame americans for liking them. Afterall, where would the US be without the Nepoleonic french to win their wars for them?
In addition. There are only two countries in the world that are able to call themselves by their nationality and continent. Those are Australia and Antartica. And as no one lives their entire lives in Antartica, they don't really count.
In addition. Using correct terms in the English language, there are 21 States in America.
Not the United States, as anyone who is forced to watch their television can tell you is a lot higher than that.
So, please, cut it with the arrogant nationalism in claiming that the U.S.A. and the U.S.A. alone are Americans. For remember, you are the United States OF America. Not America itself. Else we'll have to start calling you french.
And I'm just glad no one dared calling the Irish, english. I'd gut you alive.

Caldari definately American: capitalists, control freaks and wear tight leather jerkins. How I imagine capitalist society would be should we continue on our current trajectory.

I chose Caldari because they seemed like realists. They understand the military and money are what matters, and so I figured they would have the most powerful ships (I was dead on, as far as PVE goes anyways).
Democracy is one of the worst forms of government, so I was not really a fan of the Gallente because they seemed to have a total hard-on for freedom and liberty and blah blah it made me sick.
The Amarr looked asian, and I wanted to be a white male (as I am a white male and have a really hard time playing an RPG as anything other than myself).
Minmatar looked really, overwhelmingly terrible. Ex-slaves? What a bunch of losers!

Hmm...lotta 'American' detest goin round.
I am an american as used by most every one, meaning a citizen of the U.S. I chose Minmatar as my race for specific reasons. Yes, I know they're were former slaves, blah blah...but they also were a people who fought back hard against their oppressors and won. They are the race most full of energy. They are pushed to prove themselves to the other empires that they deserve their freedom, but also they need to prove it to themselves (dont forget the Ammatar Mandate). Reading their descriptions and the news that is generated about their Empire, no other race come across to me with more possibilities than the Minmatar. No other race can claim having to work harder to where they are now than the Minmatars.
I loved movies where you are cheering on a hero who had little chance to succeed. Braveheart, V for Vendetta, Lord of the Rings...this is the Minmatar to me. On that idea, I am proud to play one .

Republics and Democracies are not mutually exclusive. the vast majority of Democracies are also Republics (although the reverse is not true).
Republic means "the head of state is not a monarch". Democracy means "governed by a body who is ultimately accountable to the citizenship". America = both. UK = Democracy but not a Republic. North Korea = Republic but not a Democracy.
The Gallente Federation is meant to be both- governed by a (non royal) president, elected by the citizenship. Minmatar is definitely a Republic (no royalty), but not a Democracy in any real sense. Amarr are most certainly not a Republic (lead by an Emperor), and not a Democracy either. Caldari are a Republic, but not a Democracy (an Oligarchy really, I suppose). --------

Caldari = Too generic. Quake soldier #84556543573747 Gallente = Democracy is overrated Amarr = Almost what I wanted, couldn't come up with an acceptable portrait, plus the ships are fugly. Minmatar = Cool portraits, guns go rat-tat-tat, defiance is sexy, no mamby-pamby democracy theme, you want rights? fight for them, might makes right.

Its form and function would seem to be quite American, with its centralized government, directly elected executive office, with a very Euro flavor in the sense that its "states" are more politically independent entities than the American states are.
The French thing seems to throw people off. The Gallente aren't a socialist democracy, they're more a libertarian free-market state. Lots of liberty, but it's sink or swim.

I had a really hard choice between gallente and Caldari and ALMOST choose Gallente i love both there backstories but i ended choosing caldari because to be focused on military seemed like a good base race. I then spent the next hour reading through the attibutes and wha they did and decided Civire was the best fighting choice. then spent the next 30min playing with the face ^_^ and i started paying 4 days later muaha

Hi
I first started playing Eve just over three years ago, and was introduced to it by a friend that told me that it was alot like Elite. I watched him play it for a couple of days and decided to try it.
My first char was either going to be Caldari-Civire or Amarr. I was thinking about RPing a bounty hunter, so a Civire looked temptimg (+ Shields and missiles.. cool :)). Or an Amarr zealot (Lasers ftw!).
I eventually chose Civire, and since my friend had played about a week longer than me, he wasn't any help when it came to portrait/stats.. I ended up with a char that looked like my father and a terrible stat balance (high per, will and *sob* char).
I took my time making this char though.. got good stats and the portrait isn't so bad. A balanced stat balance was a goal this time.
--- My take on the races-
Amarr - Religios fanatics.. somewhere between 14th centuary Roman Catholics (one god to rule them all, etc) and ancient Egyptians (Emperor is god's avatar, etc).
Caldari - hyper-capatalistic japanese where loyalty to the corp and honour are paramount. (Needs of the many... , In Caldari State Corporation owns YOU etc).
Minmatar - Freed slaves. I almost made a char with this but thought OMG FREEDOM etc.
Gallente - More a free state, loose laws holding it together. You can find anything and everything for a price. Corrupt & sleazy where (almost) everything is allowed.
bleh.. I can't be bothered writing any more.

First I went with Caldari and was going to work on the merc/tough cop character, but then as I norm use this name as my main in most games Amarr fitted the bill , and with the slave side of things it reminded me of Elite2 where I would head down to the Imperial home worlds buy a load of slaves and head to the frontier so they could start a new life as free men and women.

Edited by: Blacktail on 01/08/2007 18:57:34 Edited by: Blacktail on 01/08/2007 18:56:23 The main reason I went with Caldari was for looks I suppose, though I'm now wishing that I was a little more skilled with the character creation thing. I just recently made an Intaki female who turned out great in my opinion (search 'Kalina Reyes' in game).
Makes me wish I could just convert BT's stats onto hers.
But I do happen to like the Caldari backstory quite a bit. The Minmatar's underdog story is a bit to cliche'd for me, but the Caldari one suits me well. The story of the Caldari/Gallente war, and all of the lore surrounding it, (the carpet-bombings from orbiting ships, the Chimera carrier being kamikazed to buy time, and images like these: http://www.eve-online.com/wallpapers/#sh (the one with the bombing of the city)
all paint a very dramatic history to me.

I choose mine based on my past RP experiences in other MMO's that Ive been in, IE I went for the race that, to my perspective, has the most freedoms, which was the gallente. I mean when you look at all the other races, something dictates from a "higher" position what they can or cant do.
Amarr = Far to much like catholosim for my tastes. Religion is a king puppet controled by corrupt men and the faithful follow blindly or face The Amarrian Inquisition. (nobody expects the amarrian inquisition!) Their told by the church what to do.
Caladri = They have a Spartan like quality to them RP wise. A military state. Die for the greater good, even if you dont have a say in that greater good is your greater good. Their told by the state what to do.
Minmatarr = So driven in their quest for freedom that they are enslaved by it (ironicly). All goals are aimed at freeing everyone else and all who stand in their way and their way of doing things is their enemy. Their told by the past/current ideals what to do.
Gallente = Free to do whatever you wish, including being ruthless. Its a dog eat dog federation but if you play your cards right, dont try to enforce your POV on the majority of others, your likely to come out with only a few scratches. Their ruled by the desire to be free to do what they wish to do.
Of course, this is only my persepective take on the playable races as a whole, and not the bloodlines.

But about the descriptions..
Gallente: South, east and central Europe Caldari: Flag carriers of high-tech world, meaning US, some countries in northern Europe, Japan, South Korea, maybe Australia etc.. Minmatar: I found aspects of later industrialized countries, such as former commonwealth countries, India, South Africa.. Amarr: Doesn't really need explaining, strong religion, fancy for gold. I chose Caldari because... uh... wow. I really can't remember. Albeit, it was a really long time ago, and the stories have changed so much since then. I likely chose them because it fit with my view of what I wanted to be at the time.
The original description indicated that the Caldari had been stuck in a divionary war against the Gallente only a hundred years or so before, and that they flew fast ships in close combat with the "mighty Galente" battle-fleets. That they used fast frigates against the Gallente so effectivly that they had to develop an entire weapon-system to counter it. That plus some fiction like the Torvil Toba incident made it a solid choice... I was hoping for fast response combat in little, quick, shield based ships [shield projectors aren't heavy, are they?] with a strong emphasis on tactics...
Hahaha, sigh. Doesn't sound like today's Caldari much.
