Edited by: Jimer Lins on 18/05/2007 06:31:39 Edited by: Jimer Lins on 18/05/2007 06:30:37 EVE Slang and Acronym Disambiguation
When I was a newbie to EVE, I often found as I explored more of this game, that I ran into the wall of acronyms, abbreviations and slang. Sometimes you can figure out what's being said by context, other times by using the Lexicon but quite often I had to ask someone or persist in my noobishness.
So, I present this posting, my attempt to put together a resource for the EVE Community, especially those needing to figure out what all the long-timers are saying to each other.
If you have suggestions for additions to the list, let me know. I'll try to keep this post up to date. I'm quite sure I've left out a ton of good ones. And yes, I have put some real "duh" ones on here, because the one and two day old players won't know some of this.
EVE Slang and Acronym List aggro Being attacked, usually by NPCs
aggress Attacking or being attacked to get a flag (see flag)
align Orienting on a warpable object to reduce time to enter warp. You should do this if you want to get out quickly.

BCS Ballistic Control System.
BS Battleship

canflagging Taking ore or loot from a jetcan to get a flag in hopes of being attacked
carebear Player who avoids PvP

Thanks, I checked out that one- a very impressive list. I took some of the entries and added them to this one but didn't take all; Sunny Mooninite's done a great job of collecting module acronyms and so forth, while I wanted a good resource for the abbreviations and slang.
Thanks!

Nice list. Nitpick: Heavy Assault Cruiser (not 'Attack').
Could add: Ceptor - Interceptor(I hate 'inty') Bubble - Mobile Warp Disruptor or interdiction sphere POS - Player-owned structure (or starbase)
hm, will post more if I think of them.

You might also want to add common prefixes to ship names used to quickly identify what weapons or general setup the ship uses.
For example, blasterthron (Megathron with blasters), nosdomi (Dominix with Nos), autopest (Tempest with autocannons) in the case of weapons, or nanocurse (Curse with a speed setup) in the case of a setup identification. While most of these are pretty self explanatory, you might decide it doesn't hurt to include them because most experienced players identify ships in this way instead of spelling everything out.
Also, it took me forever to figure out for myself what an autopest was, and if just one noob is spared from that I'm happy.
I was somewhat surprised to see you didn't have "sniper" in your list, which is commonly defined as a ship (almost always a battleship, but not always) geared towards maximum damage and range at the expense of all else. They're most common in fleets, where they can rely on the support of smaller ships as they commonly have little or no tanking capability.
I didn't see "tank," "passive," or "active," either. While tank is easily definable and perhaps not needed, it might be nice for new players to know a "passive" tank relies on the intrinsic attributes of the ship for its defense (commonly augmented with modules light on the capacitor) such as sheer hitpoints, shield regeneration rate, or resistances, while an "active" tank features capacitor-heavy repairing modules and the modules required to keep them running.
If this is all useless gibberish, then so be it, but if it's useful then I'm happy to contribute. ---

Don't forget the mighty 'Alt'.
Alt = Alternate character on same account, or sometimes (probably a misnomer), character of second, third, etc., account.

As in... I jumped through the gate and got WTFPWNBBQ'd by a hostile gatecamp.
Basically getting you a** kicked.

Updated the list- thanks to all who have contributed. I told you there were some obvious ones I missed! :D
Update: Sunny Mooninite has another excellent guide here, focused on ship and module abbreviations. I updated my list with some, but not all of his- his is exhaustive with respect to ship/module abbreviations, so I recommend it for all your module needs.
Update 2 5/18/07: Thanks to Sakura Nihil, Aioa and Dark Shikari. Added several terms.
Update 3 5/18/07: Added several new terms. Thanks to Cyberflayer, Dotard and Han Quattro.

If podded = killed in your pod, what would be the appropriate verb to describe the situation where one's ship was destroyed (but he wasn't pod-killed / podded)?

I just use kill, as in:
"I just killed that Stabber with Stiehl, my alliancemate" -> denotes I destroyed the ship, also you can replace 'that Stabber' with a pilots name, like:
"I just killed Keoryte with Stiehl, my alliancemate".

And you'd be right, especially when they're in a hopeless situation. Unless you state you podded or killed and podded him, we just generally assume you stopped at the ship.

Update 6/1/2007: Corrected bad formatting on one entry, added "tbh- to be honest" and changed NRDSI to NRDS/NRDSI as both variations get used from time to time.
Thanks all.
