Hi,
I'm Virgil and i'm thinking about what to spend my time with. Here's the thing. I like scanning, but in High Sec, finding stuff that's worth while is quite frustrating. Now, i thought about training towards Ninja Salvaging. I don't want to salvage from Players who want to salvage themselves, though. So i't like to know how many players leave their wrecks. Should i go straight for a Black Ops Ship and scanning in Null Sec?
Thank you in advance =) |

This is not the correct mindset for a ninja salvager. If you're a ninja salvager you should be taking salvage from anyone and everyone. It's actally a lot of fun sneaking about - and if someone gets cute, locks you up, or demands you pay ISK, then, call it a finder's fee. You found them, you get the salvage. Tell them to pay more attention to D-scan next time.
Sometimes you can have a run of bad luck. Sometimes you can land in the frying pan when you happen upon a level 4 site which hasn't been cleared. Other times you can hit the jackpot - you know this when you scan down a BS and a bunch of MTU's in similar location. It's not risk free, but, if you're got the balls for it can be a lot of fun. |

EvE isn't like other games, you dont ask people what wrecks are theirs, you salvage the wreck before them and if someone bothers you, trash them, and salvage THEIR wreck!
Wouldnt go to nullsec btw, most wrecks you'll find is in faction warfare lowsec, and go after the elite wrecks as those are the ones with expensive T2 salvage.
Easiest way to go is a magnate (Or if youre a non-Amarr alpha, any other scanning ship will work) warp stab the lows, add salvage tackle in the rigs, salvagers in the highs, then dual prop mod and go to town. If you die oh well youre cheap as hell.

These days there's plenty of wrecks in every asteroid belt due to "the agency"... I'd really like to loot those vessels, what are the consequences with Concord? Is there any problem after the 15 min cooldown?

There are no consequences from CONCORD, you just get a 15 minute suspect flag. No problem after the 15 minutes. Do this in something with weapons and a warp scrambler just on the off chance that some miner tries to sic his drones on you while you are carrying that suspect flag.
Protip - if you want to increase the odds that miners will shoot at you, try bumping them and telling them about www.minerbumping.com - those mining lasers are better loot than anything you are likely to find in random NPC wrecks.

Thank you in advance =) You can always advertise in major mission and trade hubs as a mission salvager, most high level mission runners don't bother with salvaging since they're too busy maxing their time to run missions. They may even provide bookmarks to pockets of wrecks and allow you to collect up the loot as well, just make sure they abandon / blue the wrecks first.
Good luck to you.

Ok, had a run yesterday - looting the wrecks is not penalized, only looting the boxes! You can even open the boxes to have a peep without starting the clock.
So if there's only metal scraps or other minor stuff, the risk is not worth the loot. |

LOOTING the wrecks IS penalized.
You can:
- Open the wreck or container (box) to look; as long as you don't drag anything to your ship or click the loot all button, you're fine
- SALVAGE the wreck by using a salvager module or drone. This extracts the salvage materials from the wreck and changes the wreck to a container box. The salvage materials are sometimes more profitable than the loot inside.
- If the wreck is blue (free for all) you can do whatever you want. If the wreck is yours (as in, you killed the NPC that created the wreck) then you can also do whatever you want.
As far as who loots, it's usually like this:
1. It's much more efficient to bookmark the wrecks and come back later with a tractor beam and salvager destroyer. You initially focus on combat and getting the mission done, then you focus on tractoring and salvaging as fast as possible.
2. If I remember correctly, the mission payout is in the 200-400k range, with bounties collected from the NPC pirates in the 2-5 million ISK range. Loot is another 2 million ISK, and salvage can add up to another 2 million ISK, but stopping to loot and salvage doubles or triples the time it takes to move on to the next mission.
3. So, some people "blitz" the missions, just killing the boss to complete the mission as fast as possible, so they can cram as many mission and bounty rewards per hour as they can. Others take it slow, looting and salvaging everything.
So your chances of finding wrecks to salvage will vary depending on who's running the missions and what their preferences are. You can increase your chances by using the Agent Finder to find where the Level 4 agents for popular NPC corps (such as Caldari Navy, Federation Navy) are located, and going there. If you're in a mission-running system, you'll have 20-30 people running missions at any time, and should have plenty of chances to probe out their wrecks.

I did not see this stated clearly so here goes.
Loot and salvage are not the same thing even though I hear them used interchangeably all the time. Before I go any further it is important to remember that what follows only applies to high sec.
Loot - fly up to a wreck or a container, open it and remove the contents. If the wreck or container is white or blue this is perfectly legal, if anyone attacks you for these actions they will get a visit from those ever so kind, helpful and friendly people known as Concord. If it is yellow then you just gave the owner of the wreck or can rights to kill you.
Salvage - fly up to a wreck and use a salvage module. This is legal everywhere in the game and the color of the wreck is not relevant. You can salvage a yellow wreck right in front of the owner, if they attack you then they have violated the rules of engagement and those friendly helpful people from Concord will pay them a visit.
Other thoughts. Many mission runners are doing what is known as a blitz in which case they do not want any of the loot or salvage anyway so if they are around when you find the stuff simply ask them to abandon their wrecks which turn them blue so they are legal for you to take.
On the other hand if you want to follow the advice given above and take what you want then please be smart and stay away from structures that may be in a mission or DeD pocket. Since I stated in 2010 I have killed 15 ninja looters in a perfectly legal way and the answer is no I have not fired a single shot at them. If they are stupid enough to sit right on a structure I blow up that structure and once in a while that generates enough damge to kill their ships. |

Thanks for the clarification to both of you. Even found some "blue" sites, there are many kind players in Eve :-) I think about becoming LvL 4 Janitor after your suggestions, sounds exciting for a new player. Just have to improve my scanning skills.

I blowed some structures in missions, but my ships were not harmed in any way, even when being only 1-3 km away. |

Tyrrell Caitiff wrote:What structures do you mean? I blowed some structures in missions, but my ships were not harmed in any way, even when being only 1-3 km away. For the most part structure explosions are not strong enough to do any serious harm to a mission ship so it is not surprising that you have not had any problems with it.
The structure explosions in level 1 to 3 missions do not have the strength to kill anything even a light drone. However in level 4 and level 5 missions there are structures that when destroyed create a strong enough explosion to kill all sizes of drones and even some player ships if they are to close. Here are some numbers I think will help you understand this, I will use the main structure explosion from level 4 Damsel in Distress as an example. To complete this mission you must blow up this structure and when it doe it deal 3,000 hp explosive damage to everything out to about 30k. I believe this explosion is significantly stronger and that will become obvious in the next portion.
I lost a Gallente Garde II sentry drone to this structure because my fleet mates did not warn me they were going to blow it up. Yes stupid me I know about this and I deployed my drones to close. Anyway the Garde II has 3,408 ehp the Gallente frigate called the Tristan has 1,350 EHP. Even counting the smaller sig radius(affects damage application) of the Tristan there is still enough damge here to destroy one that is poorly tanked. And given that most frigates in the game are about equal in EHP and that many exploration and ninja salvage people do not fit a tank to their ships I think you can see how this is possible.
No you can not rely on blowing up someones ship by destroying the structure they are sitting next to. Yes it is possible that those ships that exploded may have taken damage already and they were weaker as a result of it. Will you get blown out of space by structure explosion? maybe, depending on the structure, your ship / fit and how close you are. Can you avoid the possibility of being blown up by a structure, yes simply by staying away from them which is why I brought this up to start with.
