what would the strongest tank be that runs forever?
i need a ship that goes in first and then a second one just for pure raw damage...
the thing is that i dont know wether the abaddon, rokh or drake is the strongest. since i havent flown the abaddon and rokh yet...
and how would u set it up? + rigs offcourse. remember, it has to run forever, so that means no capinjectors.

^^^ It's a good point, however the domi can fit lots of tank supporting mods in the mids and isn't already starved for cap like an Amarr ship would be. It can deal damage while devoting all cap to its tank. The scenario dictates which is the best tank really. Is the ship going to just sit there and soak or is it gonna need to be able to attack as well, etc.

Personally I would say go with the dominix then.
Mainly because the drone bonus will be of use to you, with the large drone bay as well, making it easy for it to help your raven.
7 slots is enough to have a very good tank without a bonus. 6 highs are enough for looting and salvaging. Plus it has enough mid slots to have an AB, enough Cap Rechargers to sustain everything and then possibly something like a target painter to additionally help your Raven.

Not sure but doesnt that bonus aply to heavy armor/shield maintance drones aswell? I mean having 5 heavy shielddrones on a shieldtanking raven makes things...rather easy. _________________________________________________ Breetime

2 Things - 1.) No tank is permanent. Even the almighty Drake dies. Yes it takes a while but it will die.
2.) The OP said Tech 1 ship and you can not tell me that the Drake is the best T1 ship for tanking. As it appears most in this forum thinks the Domi is the best.

Maelstrom is an active shield tanker - that atuomatically knocks it out of a "longest-running" tank competition. That said, it can tank higher DPS (while its cap holds) than any non-capital in the game.
My vote would have to go with an Abaddon or Rokh - those resistance bonuses make them last a loong time ..

I'd go with a hyperion. Tanking bonus, rigs, and 5 slots for cap rechargers. Might be alot easier to get it to perma tank than a mealstrom.
As long as you have the skills to get the tanking bonus, rigs to boost the repper, It should have no problem tanking lvl 4 missions. Cake-walk if you use just rat specific hardeners.
The repper bonus on the hype is actually far better than the resist bonus on the abaddon. The draw back is that the abaddon don't have to spend cap to get it's bonus. -------------------------------------- ---"What's in your wallet?"--- "There are two kinds of respect, fear and admiration.... Hm, I would field a passive Drake. Probably even 2 of them, so it doesn't matter which one is under fire - in case the NPCs decide to roast your Raven. The next advantage is that you don't have to care of activating any modules. Just go in - fire FOFs, collect loot and repeat.
Setup is easy (everyone should know it by now). Drake, 3 Large Shield Extender, 3 Resistance Amplifier, 4 Shield Power Relay, 3 Core Defence Field Purger. If you use T1 and named stuff, it will last quite long. With T2 even longer. Basically, this is so easy that it will bore you to hell and back in no time - unless you need the ISK to do some creepy things.
But if you want to find an opportunity to burn all the ISK you earn then, I would think about switching to more "fun" ships later on. Maybe a Sleipnir with Gist X-Type X-Large Shield Booster? Can be run forever, too. And can tank most missions alone. Or my beloved Astarte with dual Corpum repairer. Tanks great, blasts greater.
The problems of battleships used as perma-tankers is that they can hardly use oversized modules (whereas Drake has no problems fitting battleship sized shield extenders). Of course, the Maelstrom with the capital shield booster [uses 240 cap/sec, and has almost no slots free to get that cap]. The other possibility is a dual setup, which is quite hard to make sustainable. Abaddon and Hyperion (which are quite on par) can do it with a lot of cap rechargers and so on. But as long as the large shield extenders can be used on cruisers (and battlecruisers), this will be the cheapest alternative.
Ever tried the passive I5? Phunny. Can we get EVE back? Please. |

Maybe you change your tactic :
Your damage dealer goes in first with normal, not badass tank. Then you send your alt in a support ship (cruiser mostly) who can then help your main tanking by sending energy, shield or armor, deploying more shield or armor bots, and that gives your main damage dealer a badass permatank.
I use an Oneiros (or Exequror as T1) with 2 energy transfer and 2 remote armor repairs and some repair drones, which keeps my Megathron nicely alive without worries.

Edited by: WredStorm on 23/05/2007 15:08:11 OP, You might have problems with your plan in that the "tanking ship" your planning on using would have to grab agro prior to your raven attacking them. It might be easier if you simply use your alternate ship in a support role to your raven (similar to what has been mentioned above). You might try something like a Dominix outfitted with shield transporters (remote shield repairers) and 5 heavy shield maintenance drones and have them all focus on keeping your raven alive.
You'd warp into a mission with your raven first, followed closely by the Domi. The Domi would target your raven and launch your shield maintenance drones and sic them on your raven and activate its own shield transporters on the raven and stay within whatever range of the raven you want it to be. You could fit something like:
Dominix: Highs: Large Shield Transporter I Large Shield Transporter I Large Shield Transporter I Large Shield Transporter I Large Shield Transporter I Salvager I
Mids: Cap Recharger I Cap Recharger I Cap Recharger I Cap Recharger I Cap Recharger I
Lows: Capacitor Power Relay I Capacitor Power Relay I Capacitor Power Relay I Co-Processor I Capacitor Power Relay I Capacitor Power Relay I Capacitor Power Relay I
Rigs : Capacitor Control Circuit I \ Capacitor Control Circuit I \ Capacitor Control Circuit I \
5x Heavy Shield Maintenance Bot I
This has enough cap to run all 5 shield transfers non-stop (max cap regen is ~262 and max cap used is ~240 with appropriate skills). Each shield transporter would be repairing 320 shield hp every 5 seconds which (with all 5 running) would equate to 320 shield hp being regenned every second.
Each heavy shield maintenance drone would be repairing 69 shield hp every 5 seconds. With 5 of them that is another 69 shield hp every second, for a total shield repair amount of 389 shield hp/second.
That would be in addition to whatever the normal passive regen on your raven would be.
Again, the nice thing about this concept is that you wouldn't have to go back to the Domi and have it do anything new until you'd finished cleaning out the current area with your raven. If you go the route you've initially proposed your "tank ship" would have to maintain agro from everything for that plan to work, something you might find a bit more cumbersome to accomplish.
Good luck with whatever you do, WredStorm ----- Think out of the box, consider passive shield tanking your Myrmidon, you'll be pleasantly surprised! |

With the following assumptions:
Money no object (officer/deadspace mods ok) High Skills No shooting necessary by tank
I would think that a properly fitted absolution with those 7 low slots and those nice resists would have to be a terror. Fitting with two cap recharge rigs and officer cap rechargers in the mids would give the ability to run two core armor reppers simultaneously forever (doing the math in my head - may be wrong though). Combine with a couple of deadspace hardners and faction EANM's and you are gtg

If it is for missions, I don't think there is one best for all, it will depend on what you fight against. I would therefore suggest to take a closer look into AFs or HACS, and using the race specific bonuses there (you also get a nice damage reduction from lower sig radius, that you have to factor in + skill to lvl 3 lets u use small t2 repper). Problem will be, with current mission design, most missions will not be doable like this for you, as you have a lot of triggers and they may target the wrong ship. Other missions you cannot tank with any t1 (nor t2) permatank full stage aggro. In fact if you just use a well tanked Raven/CNR and have the alt follow one stage behind in a dedicated looter/salvager, you may be better off and safer (esp. if you can use 2 comps). If the tank is to run forever without Cap Boosters, that rules out any decent shield tank, so it is either passive, or armor tank. If you go passive, myrm or drake are your choice, but they are no use if you cannot aggro full stage (they won't have the targeting range for all missions, so if you can't pull droneaggro you are screwed). Armor tank I would suggest Amarr HAC or BS (most cap/slotlayout good enough), or Hyperion. Those should be your best bet if you need to permarun. As for setup, something that can aggro at long range (civilian gatling gun or bigger :P), 1 LAR, 3 primary, 3 secondary hardeners, meds full of cap rechargers, if you have a spare low, damage control. On missions that do all damage types it will get tough though. As for rigs, as many cap recharge rigs as you need to get the tank perma, if you have spare, bonus to rep amount. To figure that out, get quickfit and enter your skills.....
But again, due to current design of missions, I wouldn't try what you plan, as it's not going to work on a good deal of missions.

Unless a ship has a specific bonus towards some form of tank anything can be anything; even with a bonus sometimes its better to do something else... the Maelstrom and Cyclone get an active shield boost bonus, which makes them active shield tanks. BSes in general don't make good passive tanks in general (some ships, like the Scorpion, can do it) because passive tanks rely on oversized modules, and no such modules exist for BSes.
I don't know why the Mael would get ruled out as a longest running tank, as it is quite easy to get a permanent setup with Gist XLs.

I would suggest you do a little more reading and a little less putting down other people's responses. The OP specifically stated he is looking for the best tank so that he can lead in with a ship with such a tank and follow that with a second ship that will be his damage dealer. Those of us who suggested heavy shield maintenance bots were simply proposing an alternative way he might accomplish similar results... none of us suggested trying to use the heavy rep drones on the ship actually launching them (that isn't possible)... we proposed using them on his damage dealing Raven in conjunction with shield transfers from the ship acting in a logistics role.

Best idea yet. All the raven would need to do is fit a X-large shield booster II and 5 hardners. The booster is so he doesn't die while getting agro and waiting for the domi to warp in.

Dominix is useful because of drone power.. on a low skilled character however this isn't that useful when doing duo missions..
First off you have the constant targetting you have to do (since your raven has aggro).. second.. honestly .. tech I tanking sux for certain lvl 4's.. really.. I would just go for a tech II tank.. for a domi that's pretty damned easy tbh, just a few skills at lvl 5 (don't forget the cap skills).
When doing lvl 5 on the test server I was just doing a domi with it's own tank and built for helping to tank:
2x large shield transfer (well they were armour but I guess they fit kinda the same) 2x heavy nos 2x drone link
5x cap recharger II (seriously get those over tech I's any day)
1x LAR (if you must have tech I the best named, but..) 4x tanking slot 1x damage control 1x beta cap relay
3x cap rig / 2x cap rig + 1x aux nano pump rig
attack drones and 5x logistics drones But next to a raven I often like to see .. a raven.. if you set them up about the same (with good tank and at least 1 heavy shield transfer on each) you should be fine to tank stuff, and it's really useful when doing damage..
Btw, a few issues with your plan:
You're really faster with two damage boats and after the mission salvaging with a dedicated salvage ship following a nice loot ship... the dominix can be an exception because you can get dmg while keeping your high slots free.. FoF missiles might not work too well to really keep your tech I domi alive long enough
All the stuff above does not necessarily reflect my corp, my alliance or even me.. Drone guide.. |

Apoc. If you aren't using it for guns then it's a better tank than the Domi, primarily because it's higher tier but mostly for its cap bonus.
Highs: Salvagers and Tractors to taste Mids: Cap Rechargers Lows: Dual Large Rep, 4 x Hardeners, Cap Power Relay. Rigs: Rep Amount, Rep Cycle Time, Cap Control
A Domi cannot sustain both reps on a similar setup permanently (it can do so for a long while but not permanently) whereas the Apoc can with a reasonable BS level. --
