I had just completed a mission this morning and went back to my base to pick up the salvager (a destroyer fitted out for salvaging). On leaving the base I was warp scrambled right outside the station.
I docked, left again and got scrambled. I docked, changed into the Myrmidon and undocked only to be scrambled again! I tried to initiate conversation with the scrambler and was blocked.
I was a 0.6 security system with sentry guns everywhere and I was literally on the edge of the docking perimeter, i.e. I could just choose dock and I was immediately back inside.
As the scrambler's ship only flashed yellow on the overview, I didn't fire. I assume he was trying to bait me into firing on him. In the end I fitted a warp stabiliser and left via a circuitous route (rather than just warping to my destination, I went via a couple of safe spots). I've given both him and his corp bad standing so I'll know immediately if they show up again.
So here are the questions: 1) can you warp scramble someone in high security and nothing happens? i.e. it's not classed as aggression? 2) if I waited long enough, would concord have responded to this "aggression"? 3) if I fired at the scrambler's ship, would I have been concord's target and fair game for the scrambler? 4) did I do the right thing, or should I have wasted the sucker? - he was in a frigate, but had a mate in the area. The character has about 2 years experience, so I'm assuming he's no noobie.

1) No, if you warp scramble anyone you're game to concord
2) Yes, in fact the sentries shoulda started shooting him instantly if he just scrambled you randomly. However had you stolen from his can that belonged to anyone in his corp within the last 15 minutes or killed his ship in .1 or higher "without him firing a single retaliation shot" he would have been able to shoot you.
3) He probebly wasn't scrambling you at all, as if he was you'd have seen a red box around him, not yellow. Yellow just means he had you locked, but not scrammed.
4) Chances are he wasn't scrambling you if he only had a yellow outline, unless there was some unknown bug he exploited. You sure you weren't just turning around too early after undocking and running back into the station you just undocked from? ____________

Thanks Duban.
I hadn't stolen anything from him or anyone else (other than the NPC rats I'd just wasted in a deadspace mission and there was definitely no-one else in the deadspace - I was watching as the mission was in 0.3 space) - this was the first I'd seen of him, outside my fleetbase in 0.6 space.
He definitely had a lock on me, and the message kept coming up saying he was "attempting to warp scramble". Maybe the point is he never actually completed the scramble.
I've never used a warp scrambler - is it something that can be turned on and then turned off again before it gets a lock? Might this cause the message to show to me, but he turns off the scrambler before it locks, thus avoiding Concord's wrath? It really did look like he was trying to bait me. There was at least one of his corp members in the area.

Attempt to scramble = scramble
Most likely he was scrambling someone else, not you.

Yep.
Sounds like to me that he was targeting you, and scrambling someone else (Corp mate) just so you see the message (As it displays even if it's not you) and you miss it and he was hoping you would shoot at him.

Ive seen this before as a tactic
person makes a can and names it the same as a player and scrambled that , as well as targeting the person with the same name. it announces that in space
Im not absolutely positive that works, its been a while since ive PVP'd
in a hi sec system it should have said " blah , you have foolishly engaged, etc after the scamble on you , as a side note its still possible he was scrambling you with an overview bug, and he was tanking the sentries.
my overview has been crap since the last patch , gates and stations and ships are listed as on the overview, but not there, and when right clicked , set to remove or not, nothing changes it.
and sometimes jumping to a new system fixes it , sometimes not.
Team work is essential... It gives the other team something ELSE to shoot at!

Striker - I think you've nailed it for me.
There was a can nearby called "you". The message was saying "attempting to scramble you". I thought this strange at the time....but didn't make the connection.
As I suspected - he was baiting.
thanks for all the replies. Looks like ignoring the baiter was the right thing to do. Cheers Baka ______________________ Have a Skill in training every second of every day and never let your bank balance sink below your skill points. |

If he is doing this in a newbie system (You can tell by all the green deadspace complexes and 1.0 security rating.)
Then this is considered harassment and you should petition him for it.
Anywhere else is fair game.

As far as I remember, the "you" can scrambling trick is considered and exploit anywhere. I'd petition him for it. ----------------------------------------------

Mind you, any aggressive act to hinder another players performance is viewed as "aggression".
So webbing and scramming somebody at a gate, will prevent you from jumping through while your still aggressed. They on the other hand, are not aggressed and can jump through the gate, and you can't follow.
And as stated, concord will kill you :)

Actually, were do you get your info from? Do you have facts to back up that statement? I have read a post from CCP stating that the scram a can tactic is an exploit so I would be interested to read the place where CCP have said otherwise!!
Anyways, petition it and waste the support teams time. After all it is wat they are there to do, support people.

Being able to warp scramble something thats not a ship, sounds like an exploit to me.

Why does it sound like an exploit? You can attempt to warp scram anything, you may not succeed, but you can try. It's just the game mechanics that show the little text box to the person nearby.
Before anyone declares it an exploit, you really do need to show a ccp post, because this just falls under one of the many baiting tactics people use.

Can't post GM messages on these forums, but suffice to say we had a situation that you described and the GM took appropriate action. Reason being that you (if you're a newer player) can't tell if its 'You' the person, 'You' the can, or say for example 'You' the player, and it can lead to snap decisions made possible by abuse of the way the game works.
Its low-level, not arguing that, but don't do it regardless .

I've filed a petition to ask if it's an exploit.
I'll post an answer in this thread as soon as I get a reply.

It's not an exploit according the GM today.
What to watch out for to recognise this:
1. The baiter shows YELLOW not RED as they are scrambling the can, not you. 2. The message is in the following form (note the corporation name after 'you') Message: piratename [corpname] has started trying to warp scramble You [corpname]
It's probably bad form to expose the pirate's name or corp, so I've placed generic names in the message, needless to say he now has VERY bad standing with me and my buddies.
Edit: Just for clarity - the pirate's corpname and the JetCan corpname are the same.

I almost fell for this as well by a station camper. I found it funny that I spotted a can labelled "you". I didn't think anything of it until I read this. Another can label I have seen is "free stuff". So let me get this straight, if you're being scrambled the agressor will flash red in high sec? Can you then open fire without fear of the cops? (or run away if outgunned)

Yes I agree its creative and funny, and I like how anything goes in EVE. Its not as carebear as heaps of other MMO's out there. If you fell for it once you prob wont fall for it again, and like the OP said its up to you to be observant and notice that concord has not engaged them and they are not flashing red on the overview. I dont know why some people in this thread (not the OP who sounds like was just trying to find out info) are so eager to get people banned anyway.

i am surprised its not considered an exploit.
ive seen threads where people complained that they were renamed when their name was too close to someone elses name. with this logic, if youd get a message from someone you should be forced to check their company and background to make sure its the right person.
and yes, ive seen this happen, and no, i didnt fall for it. people love doing this in the new player stations...

Edited by: Krytie on 13/08/2007 23:58:19 Personally, I would not do it, but I can see how this is not considered an exploit. I mean "if" this were real life, I am sure people would use this to bait people and if the local authorities did not notice a specific "bait" then I am sure that they would attack the perceived aggressor. So, although ethically this is suspect, I would agree as this not being an exploit.
I think some games have gone overboard on making too many things considered exploits. I am glad that does not pull the reins too tight.

Necro ftw btw. But, it's quite simple. If you are in high sec, the only way you can attack someone is if they are red blinkie to you. If you attack them and they are just some random neutral, you will be concorded. So do not attack anyone unless they are flashing red to you and definitely don't panic if you see some box about warp scrambling and the person isn't flashing red to you.
However, keep in mind, you attacking a red blinkie gives them the right to attack you back.

A very lame tactic to be sure.
Their reasoning is that people falling for stuff like this will learn to be wary. CCP is not for hand holding and coddling. It is better to learn from experience than to have your hand held and be protected by loads of stupid rules.

If CCP wanted to consider this an exploit they'd make it impossible to warp scramble a jetcan or somesuch. You can rename a can, you can activate a warp scram on a can, you can target another player without firing on them. None of these actions is in any way objectionable. The only objectionable thing ... is falling for it .
Anyway, the bottom line is that this is a pretty damn clever tactic, cheap, to be sure, but clever. This is another example of why Hisec space isn't completely safe. Though here, you'd only have yourself to blame if you overreacted and started firing upon the ship.
Truthfully though, as hardnosed as CCP tries to be, I'd wager that if you lost a ship to this tactic they might replace it for ya ... at least the first time. --- Wherever you go, there you are.

You don't get flagged until it actually cycles so prob the old jetcan named 'You' trick. Which as I have been informed is an exploit.
Edit: It's not? Well then
