Greetings CCP EVE devel and marketing team!
Please, please , please - can you make a SKILL MANAGEMENT ONLY type utility login. The purpose would be to allow users to do a super fast login to the EVE system to "POP" in and manage skill training. Then "POP" out of game without having to wait to log into the actual station or game world.
So far, as a young player of about 6 weeks, I find that I must log into game to manage my skills "A LOT" and a simple super fast skill only login would be SO SO SO nice.

Or a skill queue.

Yes, Soporo hit another good request idea - SKILL QUEUE FEATURE -.
In fact, CCP EVE could introduce a new CYBER SKILL that when trained to lvl 5 would allow the activation of the SKILL QUEUE FEATURE.
It seems like it is time ( 4 years into game ).

Or a web interface that would allow you to change skills. This would be a HUGE help to those of us that would like to swap skills at work.
And to secure it and keep spiders from auto setting skills, put a [XBR235Be] style "you must enter the above letters that are in the picture" thing to do the accual swap.
Just a thought

In fact, us PDA users could benefit from the same thing. I know you guys are working on a full blown eve mobile, but a little drop down box with existing skills and an execute/change button would be ideal!

Yes please. I want to make an alt, queue all skills, never touch him or even pay for the subscription, and sell him two years later. Free money!
Seriously, a skill queue is a bad idea. A skill-only login, preferably browser-based, however, is a great idea... implementing it would also mean the possibility of people using their mobile devices to change skills, allowing CCP to capitalize on this extremely rapidly growing market as well.
It's a very useful feature that will both add to CCP's revenues, allowing them to fix other things, as well as being something that's actually needed for practical reasons (rather than "omg plz nerf carebears", "omgwtf zyd is crashing its ownly twice pbaseprice ccpfix").

A good compromise to the SKILL QUEUE idea would be to limit it to the current skill and the next skill only.
Also, making players "earn" this ability by spending time training the new SKILL QUEUE CYBER SKILL to lvl 5 would make it only a feature that uber serious players would use.
But, as far as the NON-INGAME skill management feature goes, we NEED and WANT it please.

You can't switch skills now while your account is inactive, so why in the world would you think CCP would allow skill changes during deactivation even with a skill que? They wouldn't. Therefore, in 2 years, you'd be paying a LOT of money for subscription to then sell your alt.
Regardless, I'm all for anything that doesn't involve me having to be at MY computer to switch skills. But this has been suggested for a very, very long time, many, many times over.

They really should not host the WHOLE game on a single logical DB.
I use oracle and have several DB subsystems that handle discreate functions for my telecomm company, such as user account management, billing, online/offline order processing, real time switching ( DB that handles state machines for telephone and VOIP switches ), etc.
If any one sub system fails, it does not effect the rest of the operation. And again, it is all about the whole system design.
But please EVE CCP folks - it seems about time this feature was put in.

DT isn't the big deal.. its if I go on vaccation, its easier for me to keep my skills up todate while I'm gone. Also, I'm going to be moving here in a bit and have no access to broadband for awhile. This way I can keep my skills up and keep training for the month or so until I get broadband setup (yes I'd still be paying for the account).

In some ways part of this game is character management (whether it's an IC or OOC thing)
A skill queue would have to be limited to the level of the this "Cyber Skill" you're talking about. You can queue as many skills as you have lvls in this skill on a 1 to 1 ratio or something so people may have to "work" a little for it.
I know I know.. it's a game, not "work" but some of us enjoy it ;-)
See what you can do with Paintbrush? |

I love this idea. Not the queue, that will never happen, but a web based login to switch skills is a great idea

Skill queue would be fine if your training was set to stop when your subscription ran out, imo.
As it is I could train battleship V my last day of subscription and activate it when it's done. Same thing as queueing a ton of skills and deactivating.
Queue would be much better, if done correctly. But I'd also be happy with a web based skill manipulation system. Coding nightmare? Probably. Happy Customers? Definitely. :)

I would not think it would be a very difficult coding issue.
As of now, you can log in on your EVE web and get a READ ONLY of your current skills. Adding a STOP and START button next to each skill would not be very much more trouble at all. Especially if they are using the .NET web extensions to the MS SQL Servers.
Even if they are not using .NET web extensions, they abviously already have a "policy server" interface to the skills database because they have the read only web skill screen.

That would be a good thing in that at least those platforms require the games to actually function properly.
But that'll never happen, so no need to worry about it.

What I'm getting from this thread is that skill training in eve is stupid and that it should be made better. And I agree on the skill queue though. That guy that said it was a bad idea has a limited imagination.
**SkillQueue** WHILE "subscriber is subscribing" AND "skill-queue is not empty": - Train next skill in queue.
Its not that difficult.

ForumPosterAlt dude, Well, I am not calling the current "Manual Baby Sitter" mode of skill training stupid. But, it is about time to put in at least a web based band aid to manage skill training.

A skill queue and/or a web interface for skill management is a great idea and sorely needed for this game.
All the cons against this are kind of ridiculous really. Do you really think that being allowed to queue ONE FRIGGEN SKILL would create a mass invasion of character farmers?
Being able to queue 1 skill would have a massive benefit to all players of eve and at nearly no risk. What's the worst that could happen? Yup, not much.
This has been requested over and over and over. CCP - I know you're thinking about this. How about starting small. Make a queue or a Web interface. That's it - something simple. THEN, once that's in and you've got a feel for how it impacts the player base, start getting more creative.
I truly don't understand why something that seems relatively simple (I'm not a programmer - I may be wrong) and is in such high demand, has not been addressed.

True, but that depends on how they implement the queue. Skilltraining appears to be implemented in "date completed" manner, so to speak... When you start training a skill, the server writes down that the skill will be done next thursday at 21:02:52. Unless you change the training, it'll complete at that point, downtime/patch/HW trouble or not.
The queue could be implemented in pretty much the same way.

Ok, here's a good example. You have a skill training to fly something that you've been waiting on for awhile. It's got 7 hours left on the skill, and you've got to goto work for 9 hours + commute time. You could either eat the few hours of lost training time to be able to have the skill when you get home and can play, or you switch to a longer skill and have to wait longer to use what ever that skill was going to enable you.
If you've ever had this happen you know how much it stinks. A single skill queue or a way to change it via the web would help a ton. I don't see what it could hurt.
Edit- this isn't a "all the sudden" thing, people have been asking for it for a very long time.
