Dear CCP
Every other day all I see on the little MOTD / Service status box when I start eve is negative comments threatening blah blah EULA this EULA breach that.
As much as you hate these things it's just bad vibes and does not given anything positive to your subscribers.
IMHO it's bad business and if it were my company I would not allow it. I hate it, imagine how new subscibers feel when all they see is threats of banning.

Their is no such thing as a good rule, no one likes restraints. I personally like that they have the EULA highlights window.

I think there should be a warning in the MOTD that states:
"Warning, fat headed pirates inside!"
(Sorry couldn't resist.)

"always use 3 positives to every negative remark" at least thats what my previous manager said. Basically if they're going to put those lil things in they need to add a majority of positive remarks be it faction fluff, events or whatnot.

They just should put general information in there. Like it used to be, when Downtime is, or when something is wrong with server.
People agree with EULA when they start playing, if they fail to get to it then its their problem. You most likely are putting the warnings there to counter the violations, imo its ppls own responsibility if they violate..
So yeah get rid of the negative thing there..

I think it's a great message. They warn people of not breaking the EULA, just like every other MMO spams it on their news sections.
What really would be lowering the morale tho would be if we kept seeing "hardware issues, server might be a bit unstable today, we apologize .. working on resolving the issue .." etc.
If your morale drops when reading a reminder not to cheat, I wonder where the problem is. Do you consider breaking the EULA? No? Then what's so bad about it. o_O

I'm a good boy so I'm not threatend by it.
I'm glad to see them warning those nasty EULA breakers because they hurt my game.
But I like the idea of 3 positive to one negitive. and maybe a fluff thrown in for good measure.

or they could make it like on WoW where it shows a random "tip" every time you log in, including useful hints as well as jokes and news items, in addition to the EULA stuff.
it probably needs multiple sections. one to give immediate notifications like they have been, and one to give less important "tips".
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
Agreed with that. Keep the bad news, but at least give me some good/amusing news.
Basically it's like when your mom used to remind you not to run in the house, or wash your hands, or blah blah. We know, we understand, stop it.
Hah, or do like what Google used to do, where they had the text bar that showed what people were actually searching. Only have it show who the most recent ban was, followed by a link to the long list of people who were banned that day.
Or a dynamically updated ticker that tells how many people have been banned.
It's because when you're seeing these reminders, you know it's because there are a lot of people doing it.
Edited by: TheHolyKamikaze on 29/05/2007 18:38:44 Seriously. The MOTD really isn't that big of deal. But seeing as how everyone in the EVE community most likely reads it every time they login, it wouldn't be a bad idea to spend a couple minutes to come up with some 'fortune cookie' messages or tips or something other than EULA violations and server issues. (not saying MOTD has never had anything positive written on it, just a lack of) Might be just enough to change the attitude of some players before logging in, who knows?
As for the ban tickers and etc. Well that would be kinda amusing (at least to us non-n00bs)
Thommy, I think you're right. Not appealing at all. But amusing
I think the idea of naming and shaming is great in the MOTD. Have a new toon banned and tell the reason why. It would make me warm and fuzzy inside.
My favotite one was. That giving someone your account info and password, was doing so at your own risk. CCP wouldn't reimburse for any losses.
The next MOTD was - that account sharing was a violation of the EULA.
EVE is a dark and harsh world, you're supposed to feel a bit worried and slightly angry when you log in, you're not supposed to feel like you're logging in to a happy, happy, fluffy, fluffy lala land filled with fun and adventures, that's what hello kitty online is for.
