The fact that it was D Day generated absolutely no response. Typical youngsters are more interested in who sang the f*****g song.

D-Day may have been the largest invasion in history, but it was very poorly conceived. More people died than needed to, especially on the Canadian beaches. If the Allied High Command pushed through Italy instead of Normandy, they'd have reached Berlin sooner, overstepped alot of the fortifications and ended the war sooner.

You shouldn't underestimate the power of one single individual. And be careful what you say because I can easily twist it around to make it sound like that you like Bush.

Firstly: What do YOU have to do with this conversation? Some people .
Secondly: Old Derovius is Canadian from Canadia and I ventured a guess that he doesn't like Bush.
Thirdly: There are other choices.

I'm not a WWII historian, but I'd like to point out a couple of things. The French route was chosen because of military, political and geographical factors that made it the most expedient choice when no options were really attractive. Most importantly, the French route provided the quickest access to the industrial Ruhr river valley, where the few remaining German factories and foundries continued to supply the army with war materiel. It also ensured that the Allies would enjoy air superiority on the day of the assault, something that could not be said of the Italian route because of fickle Mediterranean weather and the lack of both airbases and airplanes in that theater.
Two geographical considerations also dictated a French landing. The Rome-Berlin route is longer, and necessitates crossing the Alps, and hundreds of miles of mountainous country along the German-Austrian borderlands. It would also extend Allied supply lines by around two thousand miles at a time when German diesel U-Boats were just filtering into the battlefield. Logistically, the Italian route was impossible, and Allied commanders recognized that.
Politically speaking, the French route was most attractive for two reasons. First, it would put a stop to the rocket attacks terrorizing southern England. While casualties of the rocket attacks were comparatively light compared to the Blitz three years earlier, they still posed a significant threat to London, and the PM's government. Secondly, the French route would liberate Paris, the last major European capitol under **** occupation.
It was the shortest route. It was the fastest route. It was the right choice. That doesn't mean that mistakes were not made, but to suggest the Italian route represented a better alternative is just factually incorrect. ________

the title of this topic explains its lack of response from the forum, It happened 63 yrs ago, for most people if it didnt happen to them then they dont really give a toss.
it was a significant operation which brought the world to what it is today, things could have gone really awry if they had chosen another path/route on that day but as luck would have it we've turned out alright. give thanks to the guys/gals who took part in the operation and just look at Saving private ryan for a tiny idea of what it was like for them. i'm not a bit fan of rememberances but i at least understand why peopel want to pay tribute to those that was forced to do what they had to. things could have been worse so show a little respeact to what went off instead of turning it into a current politacal matter.
we have an entirly different view on how to solve world events now, than we did back then so dont judge past deceisions against current.

I knew looking at this post at work today, Bush would be in it sooner or later. What he has to do with D-day is beyond me, but I could smell it comming.
And yes, milk in a bag? Who the hell thought that was a good idea? My GF is Canadian, and she won't even buy it that way, she buys her milk here, lol... We should have just taken over Canada long ago...
Saving Private Ryan was pretty gruesome, but I heard it was a lot worse irl... Ouch...

Nasty sht but these peopel alive today wnet through that. bless them for living with that for 63 yrs more than anything

Very accurate and to the point.
I choose to remember this day for several things
My family lost valued young people in that war. It liberated my home country And created the Europe we now live in today.
In other theaters of war in WW2 more people where killed or maimed, like the battle of the pacific, the Eastern front and the war in China. That is why i choose toremember this today.
PS: i didnt make the video or choose the music

With a capable leader the ****s might have actually won, be thankful the guy was a tactical moron.
WWII was won and lost on the eastern front, sure D-Day was a glorious moment of sacrifice and great determination and all that but it's been 63 years and its time to move on.

I am insulted by the last part of your statement; no one should ever put themselves in a position to willfully forget the sacrifices others made on their behalf. Not 1/10/100 years after the fact do you have the right to tell someone that their death was all well and good, but no longer important.
All I can say to you is that I'm sorry that you take things that others bled and died for granted. I hope in time you mature enough to give the wonderful life you live greater pause and respect.

Yes well with a capable leader the Lichtensteinians could conquer all of Europe. In the real world, Germany couldn't have been able to stand up against the military-industrial complex of America (I'm not saying Canada and the other countries didn't pull their own weight, I'm just saying that it was America's economy). I do believe that pound for pound the German's had better line infantry (except Marines, but they were in the Pacific) and tank commanders, but America was just zerg rushing Europe.
Lets please not forget that WWII did not end until Japan surrendered. Europeans seem to have a Euro-centric view of WWII. As a former Marine myself, I know my Pacific theatre history well.
