Today is the day POSwatch Inc. celebrates the launch of the first version of their new software, POSwatch. Having learned much about POS warfare in huge alliance battles, running more than 60 POS towers at one time and by one corporation, we felt it was next to impossible to communicate the needs of a POS network between the people responsible for it. Hence we had the idea to ease the pain of everyone involved in POS as industrial outposts, as sovereignty towers, as jump bridges, whatever.
The biggest issue with POS arises from the fact they can hardly be remote controlled. One has to be at the tower to check fuel and settings. Theoretically speaking, if X knows the POS needs fueling, he might head there a couple of jumps and find out Y already did the job before, making X a sad puppie. You can not document every change in fuel levels via boards or messages, it just wonÆt work.
So our idea was to develop an online accessible tool where corporations can manage their own access levels, give logins to the people taking care of their POS, so everyone involved can take a look what needs to be done and when. It will, of course, give more than this. You can check within one quick look if all strontium levels are set correct, where your POS are at, how much fuel is in each and every one, and some additional information if you entered the data needed. Best part is, it is online, due to different access levels you can set access with your administrator account, and you decide which information will be public. Have a POS nobody wants to see, like a private one or a cap shipyard, or anything? Just donÆt show it to the ordinary member. You can run quick calculations everyone can do with an Excel sheet, like fuel consumption, fuel requirements for a given period of time, etc. The advantage is, everyone gets the same information at the same time. The tool itself does not communicate with the client or whatsoever, hence it is not a violation of the EULA. You do not have to share EVE data with anyone due to using this. The tool uses built in timing and due to this you will be able to do your ôPOS-homeworkö even during downtime.
We have tried it in a first version and our POS managers felt somehow able to do anything else instead of taking care of POSs suddenly. POSwatch will save you time, time in which you can do funnier or more profitable things, we did it because we wanted EVE to be fun, but when it comes to POSs, it definitely is not.
In the following section you can see screenshots of the tool, you will find it not very colorful and pimped. We could have done that, too, we did not for a reason. We wanted it to be as clearly understandable and fast loading as can be. You will find out there is a clear line in the concept itself, it will help you with what is needed and wonÆt bother you with not useful figures. If you miss something you can always contact us, we might as well implement it to further develop the code.

ôThis sounds too good to be true, how much is it?ö Our customers are corporations of all sizes, so we do not have a one for all package. We want the tool to be wide spread and affordable to everyone, hence we made a few deals appropriate to different corporation sizes. With every package you will get one administrator access and a given number of POSs the tool will manage. With the help of this first administrator account you will be able to create as many new administrator or user accounts as you wish.Pricing is according to the number of POS included in the package
2 Pos-package: 10 million / month 6 Pos-package: 27 million / month 12 Pos-package: 52 million / month 20 Pos-package: 85million / month 30 Pos-package: 125 million / month 50 Pos-package: 200 million / month 75 Pos-package: 275 million / month 100 Pos-package: 300 million / month 150 Pos-package: 400 million / month 200 Pos-package: 500 million / month
Opening account: 10 mil
Prices are for 1 months of use, making the service quite cheap if you calculate per month or week. Of course you can pay for several month in advance too which makes things easier for you and for us and due to that we will give you an extra discount of 3% per month when you choose this option
There are special alliance deals available, which means if X corps out of alliance Y buy licenses, they will all get a discount if their alliance has made an alliance deal with POSwatch Inc. Alliance deals are not fixed and can be negotiated by contacting me in game.
We will provide the access to the database, we will host the database, and we will take care of your needs and answer all questions. However, we are not responsible for technical difficulties of our provider resulting in temporary inaccessibility. A thing which has never happened in years, but you never knowà If you have questions regarding our tool or deals, and write an EVE mail to me, you will receive a response within one business day.

And now, last but not least, answers to some FAQ.
ôWhat input does the database need?ö You have to give the race and size of the tower, as well as itÆs powergrid cpu load and a label, to add a new POS to the database. Once the tower is set, you add your current fuel stock. After that, the timer begins to count and your POS is set.
ôWhat additional information can I add to the database?ö You are able, but donÆt have to, put in a name for the POS (e.g. deathstar1, XÆs private POS), system, planet and moon. For these things the tool has preset fields, and information given will appear in the overview. You can add everything you like, comments, fittings, poems even to every tower as well. This information will only display if you take a closer look. An example would be to tell your POS managers if there is a corp hangar with fuel in stock, or if there are cyno alts stationed inside the system, whatever you find useful.
ôWhat calculations can I do with POSwatch?ö You can just pick one or any number of POS from overview and calculate fuel consumption, remaining fueling time, etc. You can spare out private POS for example. You can calculate requirements for all Minmatar towers or whatever. And, last but not least, you can simply see how many days you can fuel your Tower optimal.
ôDo I have strategical advantages?ö Besides none of your POS going offline without warning? Well, maybe one. You can see the strontium timing in each POS, so you can see very quickly if one or two are out of line or missing strontium.
ôDoes the database interact with the EVE servers and/or client?ö Not at all.
ôAm I able to change functions of the tool according to my needs?ö At the moment, no. But we at POSwatch Inc. will listen carefully to proposals of our customers and will try our best to fit the software to our customerÆs needs.
ôWhat about spies?ö Metagaming is an issue in EVE, and we are not 100% safe from attacks to our database. Noone except the administrative accounts can change details of the POS. It is up to you whom you give these rights. The functionality of our software does not rely on a complete set of data given, so one could leave the fields for location blank, and no spy will ever know where this POS is or what the modules are. There is no way to gather intelligence from the database additional to the intelligence in game if you donÆt want it. Of course you could put in as a comment, that a Leviathan titan is cooking in POS X for 6 days, and unfortunately the stront is only ser for 1 hour of reinforced mode, but then, who would do such stupid things? In Short: You decide how much security you want.
ôWhat about security instances?ö We can only tell that there are in deed some routines to keep unwanted visitors out and to track login attempts. Anything further will not be discussed in public. We are using it on our own, so we feel it is safe enough for ourselves.
ôSounds nice, what about testing it for free?ö Sorry, we have a trial period, but you will be charged a minimum fee for opening an account, since this generates work for us. If you decide to be a customer of POSwatch Inc., your contract will be cut by the trial fee of course.
ôCan I buy the software to host it on my own server?ö No.
ôCan I pay you in RL cash?ö No, we only accept ingame-ISK. We look at this as being part of a game and we want to get paid in ingame currency. Any other deals will be denied by POSwatch Inc. This is the reason why we founded an ingame corporation to deal with it, it is part of the game.
ôHow many customers do you have, and who are they?ö Any information on who is using our service at what rate are kept between POSwatch Inc. and our customer. So donÆt even ask if alliance X uses our service pleaseà
ôIs this some sort of strange IPO or whatsoever, and where can I order shares?ö No, it is a private run company, and at the moment we do not think about shares and everything related.

contact me ingame, your best choice is to send me an EVE mail with your questions and what kind of a deal you are looking for. you will receive an answer the next time i am online, so you will have the reply within 24 hours usually.
if there are other things to discuss i will contact you and discuss them in a chat or on TS.
you can, at every time, ask for a detailed offer, even anonymously. just send me an EVE mail with the number of towers, estimated duration and whether you ask in the name of a corporation or alliance.

That I think will be a deal breaker meaning no large corporation worth their salt would want to expose those details. As such I doubt any packages for 10+ pos's are going to sell (as only the big corps with secrets to keep can afford them). Unlike EVE-MON this doesn't seem to have any security assurances because the source code isn't distributed but most importantly the authors of this service control access to the database.

the answer to this question is plain simple. we knew beforehand that there wouldn't be 100% security of the DB. but as we use this tool on our own, we have implemented the most safe security mechanism ever - "drumroll" to use this tool, you do not have to give any sensual information into the database at all, but you still can use the full functionality without any setbacks.

But if we don't give any sensual info, how can we hope to turn it on?
I think you were going for 'essential' or maybe geographical would've worked better. Sorry just thought it was funny.
Good idea btw.

Edited by: POSwatch CEO on 11/06/2007 18:21:28 The answer is quite simple:
What are all details of a POS worth without knowing the loaction: nothing.
Just label the POSes as you wish, System Planet and moon are optional only, and noone besides you and your corp will ever have only the slightest chance to use this information and you and your corp will still have the whole benefit of this service. And remember: this implies that someone has haked the database, which is really not very likely

Edited by: Ricdic on 12/06/2007 03:14:02 Hi I have spent the past hour or so (so far) setting this up for my research towers (2 out of 7 done), and it is quite user friendly. I still have a bit to learn, but this saves a lot of the hassles with pulling out the old calculator every time a tower is low etc.
Initial setup takes a little bit of time (refuelling all to max as I go), but looking forward to this giving me a real-time update on my POS's when I don't have a chance to log-in to Eve to check fuel levels flying around all over the place.
So far, thumbs up from me
edit: BTW, the only conceivable security issue, would be if you place the system your tower/s are in. In my case, I have nothing to hide (all empire) so it doesn't matter, but those wanting to keep that hidden POS hidden, it is as simple as not entering those fields, or use different numbers, like Planet V, Moon 666

i am glad this is coming from one of our customers. this is in fact the reason why we have set a "label" to each tower. you can have a forum thread with a list of labels and the coordinates where you can set access levels at your own boards. so you can give this kind of information only to the people you trust.

first of all, i have not heard of this tool before, and now that i wanted to try it out i downloaded a .rar archive with some stuff in it i really can not use. i think this has to be implemented somewhere, php environment or something, but it is just a guess since i am not very familiar with it.
the good thing is you can take a look at the calculations it does quite easily, and to put it simple, the fuel consumption is implemented "the easy way" which is not how EVE does it.
we do not only sell the software, but we sell access to it, too. you do not have to host it on your own if you want to make it accessible by more than one person. this is another difference.
i really want to try the POStracker out to see if we can learn other things from it, if i find someone who tells me how to do it. i read from the code that you can add modules and such, which we found to be irritating at best since it is not needed, hence we kept it out to stay on a clear path.
for now i do not know if this is fully comparable to what we offer, but i have some doubts about it. the biggest issue seems to be (to me) that a noob can't use it, whereas everyone can use our software quite effectively from the start.

Edited by: POSwatch CEO on 13/06/2007 13:04:37 a short excurse on the POStracker (after some testing)
if you want something that works with "roughly exact" numbers (deviations of 1 hour per day in some tower setups are possible due to errors in fuel consumption calculation), if you have a clue about setting it up on your own, if you have own webspace with user management, if you need something for the ingame browser, if you don't mind the overall look of it and want something for free, then go for the POStracker. as you can publically see on the hosting site, it has been developed in 2006 and some people used it for a month, then it seemed to have stopped completely. i do not know anything about the circumstances here and i don't want to discuss this or have it discussed in this thread.
our product offers more than POStracker imho, as you don't have to take care to get it to work by yourself and will get it ready delivered with a working infrastructure behind.
my summary is: both are approaches dealing with the same issues, and that's about it. no more things in common. they differ in access, visibility and accuracy. it is of course up to anyone to make his choice. i found it interesting to see another approach, but now i think that was the last comment from our side regarding this and the topic should stay out of this thread. i like the idea of everyone being able to choose, hence i will let the original link inside of the thread, but any further discussion of the matter will be considered thread hijacking and i will point the mods to it to enforce the forum rules if necessary.
if you have any questions or want to chat about the issue, contact me ingame.

additional to this we are working on the implementation of the new sovereignty system after revelations II. the coding is done, but the calculations need some testing still. expect POSwatch to be fully revelations II compatible within the next days. for the moment our customers can safely use the old version, since sov 4 will be the only change, and it will be in effect in one month maybe.

i would like to keep our customers and our future customers informed about some changes our software is about to undergo. of course these are all beneficial changes.
1. it will soon be possible to add "customized towers". you can add tower whos fuel consumption can be entered manually. this does not effect sovereignty or anything related, it is just a comfortable way to deal with all the new faction towers. also, there might be stuff like rigs for towers or anything alike in the future, which will then be covered by this.
2. for all the moon miners out there. we will introduce a new system of timers, of course online accessible all the time and independent from the client, which can be customized as well. your silo will need 6d 14 to be filled? assign a timer to it and you will be reminded. you need to haul some moon minerals to your reactor pos within the next 16d 3h 48s? assign a timer to the task and you will be reminded. hell, you can even set timers to remind you of buying new beer...
these changes will go live in about 3-4 days from now on. the coding is already done, it just needs a little more testing, since customization might be source of several errors, and needs to be tested properly.

Edited by: POSwatch CEO on 03/07/2007 12:02:13 CCP does a patch at the moment, and so did we. the difference is our took just about 5 minutes ;-)
The POSwatch software has been further developed almost daily from the start. The tool itself became much more powerful and convenient to use during this time. We had some input from our customers which we tried to add to the software. I think it is up to our customers to decide if we did well, but the fact that almost all customers went for longer term contracts after testing the software speaks for itself.
the latest major patch brought some new elements, bugfixes and new functionality. the following points were added since the launch of our service (only major points)
-corp hangars were added and their storage is taken into account for fuel calculations -sovereignty 1 - 4 is implemented -timers can be set to predefined tasks (user defined timers, e.g. for moonmining, hauler runs, etc.) -you can now communicate to all POS managers using POSwatch via a rudimentary message board. The messages can only be seen by people with the designated roles. -we added quick info on the towers so it is no longer needed to go to the details page (popup windows) -you can select to be alarmed by email if a predefined timer runs out -you can add customized towers, covering all faction towers
other than this we improved the layout a bit and added a news ticker on the login screen, because our customers do not seem to like our boards very much. ;-)
here are some new screenshots from the software (i updated the ones in the initial post as well).
Overview Timer Details Refueling Calculator Consumption Calculator Refuel Log Board
we at POSwatch Inc. are very proud about the feedback we get from our customers. we would like to thank you all for your ideas on how to improve our service. You know as well as we do that satisfied customers are the best advertisemnt for a product. With your input POSwatch has grown into something bigger than it was in the beginning, better service with more functionality. Without you, this wouldn't have been possible. Thank you!

you better start preparing for a new version of POSwatch, which has undergone some changes. it will have more functionality, it will include modules, it will look pretty damn sexy as well. the version is in testing right now, we still need to fix some bugs, but we are looking forward to a release pretty soon.

Dear customers, future customers and everyone.
POSwatch is about to do something really stupid. we will cut our prices dramatically, we will offer more simple solutions to our customers, in exchange of more functionality and improved software. stupid, isn't it? we are going to do it anyways...
for future deals you will receive the same functionality as before, the full POSwatch access, with way more towers. there will only be two packages from now on, 50 POS package and unlimited POS package. there will only be two prices for this, 100 million for the 50 POS package, 200 million for the unlimited POS package. the prices will be per corporation, alliance deals will no longer be available. the good thing is, you pay the full amount up front, and you can freely use the full service our software offers for one full year.
why are we doing this? the answer is simple. we created a very good tool for EVE, and the management of our services is by far too complicated at the moment. better than dropping it completely we offer it for a bargain price so at least the software will be used, without creating the workload of a intensive customer support.
it will be easier for the customers, and it will be less hassle for us at POSwatch Inc. for all the coporations who have running deals with us, this is not going to affect your deal, you can however upgrade your package to one year duration by paying the difference to your deal in ISK. whatever you already paid will be fully taken into account. please contact us via EVE mail about it.
kind regards, on behalf of the whole POSwatch team, Christian

There's probably a better place to mention this and/or it has already been discussed, but I wanted to throw my two cents in. I've been using the software for about a month now and it's a great program. One thing I'd really like to see is the ability to store the resources you have available, not just currently fueling your POS. That way, I would have a better idea of how long my reserves will sustain me and when I need to go out and buy some more fuel. Other than that, the product is pretty much perfect.

thx for the hint, i will forward it to our main programmer. for the time being i suggest you create a corp hangar, name it my ressources without assigning it to a tower, and use the refuelling calculator enabling the useage of said hangar. would do the job i think, still it is kind of a workaround...

well, sorry if i sound like an ISK seller, wasn't aware of that, but one thing granted, we will keep all the ISK for our own.
also, we are at the stage of being of the opinion to have created something great, and now that our original business plan kinda failed, giving it to whoever wants it at a bargain price so at least the work of our programmer pays off in a way. not exactly what an ISK seller would do... profits from POSwatch are moderate for now, and tbh, we have enough ISK in game already ;-)

Good question - I would recommend that if that is an issue, you maintain the information about 'system', planet, and moon in a private spreadsheet, and simply invent a code-name for each tower that would be used by the POSWatch system. Then no one will know where your towers are without stumbling onto them.
Nice idea for the software, guys. Sad I didn't think of it myself ).

we had a few questions like this in the past months, check the replies in this thread for some answers. the data (all data) is stored encrypted, and only the one with access to your account will read it decrypted. not even our DB admin could take a short look, at least that's what he told me. how it works exactly will be kept secret. then again, as the above poster said, you do not need to give vital intel to POSwatch. you can give codenames for the towers and back them up in a high sec section of your boards. it is as likely your boards get hacked as POSwatch is getting hacked. with the logger you have the possibility to check who accessed your data at what time and everything, so if there was unauthorized access you have the chance to find out and tell us about it. we can provide you with a lot of information to get a hold on the intruder afterwards if needed.
it is quite safe, i really believe this and this is why our mains corp use the software themselves, being very successful with it in all terms of POS, industry, warfare, sov, logistics, ...

POSwar
all the alliance gurus out there, this is what you will want, this is it what will give you the vital information at hand, this is what will give you the advantage over your enemy (maybe not if he uses the software as well ;-) )

Wednesday is the third day of the week in most western countries and the fourth day of the week in the Judeo-Christian calendar, between Tuesday and Thursday. The name comes from the Middle English Wednes dei, which is from Old English Wēdnes dµg, meaning the day of the Germanic god Woden (Wodan) who was a god of the Anglo-Saxons in England until about the 7th century. Wēdnes dµg is like the Old Norse O=insdagr ("Odin's day"), which is an early translation of the Latin dies Mercurii ("Mercury's day"). Although Mercury (the messenger of the gods) and Woden (the king of the Germanic gods) are not equivalent in most regards, both gods guided the souls of the dead to the underworld.

I tried to create an account on your site but the script aparently failed. Not sure if I answered the "Bot Question" wrong or what could have happened.
Do you charge for using this service? If so, how much?
Thanks.

Edited by: POSwatch CEO on 07/12/2007 10:05:06 back to business after patch and apologies for the late reply, did not quite check during patch and was a bit busy getting my computer a new boot.ini - thx again CCP.
yes, we do charge for the service, either 100 mil ISK per year for 100 towers or 200 mil ISK per year for unlimited amount of towers.
to create an accout you need to send an ingame mail containing a valid email adress of yours and your preferred tariff to this character. registering at our forums is of course suggested, but does not lead to account creation. for account creation we need ingame verification (alts allowed, just so we can track payments) as well.
btw - for our customers. POS ingame are pretty much ****** up atm. we simply can not guarantee for the calculations of POSwatch if some modules that are bugging in game at the moment are involved. we will adjust POSwatch in the same quick and effective way you are used to, as soon as CCP fixes these issues and it is fully known how the related stuff works.
the patch itself did not change a lot POS-wise, but a lot of unknown sideeffects have occurred regarding POS. these are not documented yet, but we are working on it.

Why not just use a director-level API key to manage all the fuel levels, fitting specs, and so on?
If security is an issue, you could always distribute a pre-compiled binary that authenticates off your server. Solves the problem of people not paying you and people worrying that they're getting shafted with spying.

your account has been created and you already received an apology with the reasons for the delay.

we don't use API because back then when we created this piece of software we were told that an external software which uses access to the server to (by that) create advantages for some players will be classed under exploit. i am not aware of any changes in CCP's policy regarding this.

Sounds like a great application. Please send me an in-game mail regarding current and upto date prices of this service, I will respond with some questions and will see how we go from there.
May I also suggest that you implement a Moon Harvesting\Silo section? Select what the material is you are mining, and then updates the silo\silos (depending on how many you select) about how full they are. Obivousley at mining 1 material at 100units per 1 hour, would fill itself after x days\hours\minutes etc, and then if you selected 2 silos, it would show that the first one is full (red bar?) and then start counting in the second silo (green?). Once emptied, you can reset the counter?
If you could please get back to me on this matter, it would be greatly appreciated as this would be my primary use of the application.
Cheers, Gaz
