As much as I'd like to see fewer clicks in a lot of places in the game (manufacturing/invention for one, and definately drones!) we're simply stuck with them for a basic reason....macros.
Macro programs are getting more and more complex, and the easiest way to fool them on certain things is more clicky. Mouse recorder programs exist, but are only reliable up to a point (4 or 5 movements/clicks unless they've improved from my old SWG days when we used them to grind medic/doc/CM) and after that, they tend to loose track. How does this matter to me you ask? There are macro programs for almost everything now, from mouse movement and clicks to text input and calling keystrokes. The keystroke one is the main reason that next to no keyboard commands exist in EVE anymore. And all can be looped together with proper timing. Imagine a character sitting in a station botting manufacturing...not hard to do if the technology will allow. Loop calls to your keyboard to open manufacturing tab, then the mouse recorder makes all the moves and clicks, and starts the job. 15 minute job, and your bot can do 5 jobs? loop it every 3 minutes. Congratulations....you've successfully wasted 5 slots in a station for a whole day unless the server dumps you, and the whole process only takes a few seconds to complete. Come back and take delivery and be happy, while everyone else waits for slots. Problem is, with the mouse recorder and a loop, you can do the same thing without keyboard calls....that's one reason you have to wait in game to do some things....like manufacturing. Open your Science and Industry tab....the little load bar will never take the same amount of time twice in a row...completely random. Whether or not it's actually gathering server info is inconsequential.....it buggers up the timing of macros. So we all get to walk a fine line between too many clicks and too long of waits...all to prevent the dishonest and lazy from getting a leg up on us.
Sad, isn't it?
