All you need to do to fix this is change the propertys>compatability of the shortcut and check the box labeled "run as administrator" that will fix it. The Black screen is yet another nifty feature of vistas security settings. lol

I upgraded to vista and I haven't really had any problems. Vista's controls over what can run are a lot more granular than XPs so you probably need to review your firewall settings. It could be blocking the running of EVE and then blocking the network access as well, or perhaps just one of the two. Either way you will need to address both to get EVE to work. It's not necessarily bad, just different.

I run Eve on Vista aswell without problems. Could it be that a driver issue (guessing gfx card) is preventing you of running Eve.

Neither of this is the problem, I added EVE to the exception list at the firewall, but this didnt help either .... and blocking network access? how come I can sit on the net then? or do I misunderstand something? ...

Edited by: Xariouz on 17/06/2007 13:17:37 A LITTLE SUMMARY: I installed vista yesterday, and now I can't play EVE at my Vista, it worked perfectly at XP. All I get is a black login screen.... I tried every compatibility mode possible, I've tried to update my NVIDIA driver cause I used an old 81,98 driver which solved some problems earlier at XP. Neither the new nor the old driver fixed my problem, now I'm using 158.24_forceware_winvista_32bit_english_whql for my GeForce 6800XT. I tried to disable UAC, didn't affect anything. I tried to run Classic theme cause I read the Windows Aero Glass messed up EVE for some players out there... I tried to disable the windows firewall (in services, so I disabled it properly), didn't work. I tried to run EVE as ADMIN, didn't work.... I added EVE to exception list at the firewall... and EVE still won't run properly... Nothing seems to work and I'm getting very frustrated...
Please help

You should remove and reinstall the EVE client... If EVE was already installed, you may have some problems after upgrading XP to Vista...

I'm having the same issue Xariouz. Nothing I do gets me past the black screen, which btw isn't at full screen. I have the latest drivers for my Geforce 7900GS and the latest DirectX. I've made an exception for it in the firewall (i even tried with the firewall disabled) and I still get nothing. Im also running it as an admin.

I'm running EVE on Vista just fine.
I believe somewhere in the control panel you can set it to run all programs to run as administrator. That helps.

After some hours of problems getting EVE to run on vista i found the problem. 1. when you install vista remember to " SET PASSWORD " on your account creation during install.. without it eve will not start! you will be getting " black screen " 2. you can remove the password after you have your vista running 3. problems solved! vista runs like a dream and so does EVE hope this will help others so they dont have to use hours figuring this one out. Happy gaming :)

The only other think i think it might be. Is I downloaded the installer on a machine at work. I copied it to my ipod and took it home and installed it with that. The installer took a long time to come up on my home pc which is a Core 2 Duo 2.4 ghz. I wonder if doing that caused a permission problem on the file itself.

How would one go about doing that? "power cycle the monitor," never heard of such a thing.

Now even after patching to Rev II, it still won't launch. Just a black screen. Nice work CCP. I'm done playing. Great support to.

Edited by: Mimir Kollabaris on 19/06/2007 21:26:13 Try doing a clean install of Vista instead of an upgrade from XP, if that is what you did the first time. Nothing tops a clean install of your OS. ---------------------------

It is a clean install, and suggesting that i reinstall my whole OS (which the computer contains my whole life of data) for a game is ridiculous. What i don't get is why does it work for some, and not others.

Power Cycle the monitor???... is that a new feature in Vista? tell us how you do it please? =P Well I added a petition where I described my problem and I linked this thread, as a reply I got alot of things to try out which could've fixed my problem, but nothing helped me out =(
sad to see that Balinaa is having the same problem, but now I can share my problems with someone and maybe we will get to a solution even quicker. Well I'm gonna post a bug report and see what happens next.

I said if you upgraded from XP vs. a clean install. I'm not suggesting you do it again. If it didn't work the first time, it's unlikely it'll work a second time.
Good luck sorting it out. ---------------------------

with a clean install u mean like formatting partition C: and then installing Vista? like re-starting the computer with the Vista cd in it and install the most "proper" way? Should it really matter anyway? =\

Edited by: Rahelia on 20/06/2007 16:31:24 Edited by: Rahelia on 20/06/2007 16:28:12 I too had this problem since last month. Patching to Revelations II didn't cure it. The password thing never worked for me, like some people have previously suggested. I tried everything I could possibly think of. I've even read of some people on these forums (a few months back) who shrugged it off as a "hacked" Vista issue. That's utter nonsense, if you ask me.
But anywho...
As of twenty minutes ago, I stumbled across this thread.
It's working just fine now for my laptop.
Bear in mind the string value you add is case sensitive, and be careful as it deals with the registry.

My case in point: my friend can run EVE on his hacked Vista perfectly, yet one of my other friends, who uses the exact same hacked Vista, cannot get it to work for the life of him. Therefore, one can safely say it's not due to having an illegal version of Vista.

I hope this solves everyone's black login screen issue as it did mine.

Here is the answer to everyone with the same problem as me: Got the answer:
- Open a terminal - Enter "regedit", press Enter, a new window is showing up - Navigate to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" - Create a new String - Name the new String "Fonts" and give it the value "C:\windows\fonts" (case sensitive) - You are done and the login screen should show up now
(found it here http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=540320&page=1)

My font's part is already there so I can't add it.
The splash screen comes up and then nothing.
