I'm currently using a Geforce 2 GTS --- I'm upgrading---but I only will buy a video card that will be able to prevent the 'sun' from shining through solid objects....i.e planets, my ship....Occulsion....Anyways---can anyone tell me for sure what video card(s) will prevent this from happening. thanks. :)

GF4 doesn't have hardware capturing, meaning that if you want to make a movie in eve you have to use fraps and have some performance issue's.
I would go for the Radeon 9600 or something. __________________________

Well...I got a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 and it works pretty well for that. But it's not all your card's fault anyway... I think Eve's Z-Buffer still needs a bit of tuning, even if considerable efforts have been done lasts month to improve it. The occulsion defect your seeing is due to incorrect Z buffer rendering. All Direct 3D cards have suport for z buffers. With that said, I still sometimes have problems with this graphics bug on my Radeon 9700 Pro, so it's probably not your card, but the game. The devs posted a config file addendum to enable some advanced graphics settings in the ESC menu that tweaked the z buffer (among other things). This helped with the problem about 90% of the time for me. Unfortunatly I'm not at home to tell you what it is. Maybe someone else can post that for you?

Using a Radeon 9700 PRO here. No sun shining through objects here.

I have a Ge force 2 GTS and the sun shines through everything for me too, bit of a pity caus this game looks awesome otherwise. Would be excellent if there was a way to fix this but there are more important things at the moment i suppose

Occlusion worked fine on my old GeForce Ti4200 and on the cheapy new Radeon 9600 card I bought to replace it with when the fan stopped working.
I had lots of wobbly z-buffer issues with the nVidia card though, especially on some of the space stations. These have almost all gone now except on a handful of amarrian stations and it isn't as bad as before even in those cases. I believe this has to do with the nVidia card supporting a 16 bit z-buffer and the Radeon a 32 bit one so the layered surfaces of space stations where the depth changes are very small are rendering more accurately.
I would say that my fps were very slightly better with the Ti4200, but I think the limiting factor is my now ancient PIII-800.

Isn't your card fault but game that isn't correcty prepared to work with most of cards to create that effect... BTW would be fun to have buy all new hardware to play each game that we buy
Software must adapt to the hardware and and not in reverse.

Yes, before mine blew up in a blaze of glory along with the rest of the computer, the sun was hidden behind objects - it was most satisfying. AND the UI responded when I clicked stuff.. as opposed to a few seconds later :/
I want my old computer back :(

Few of those video's who were recorded by F.E. were done by these methods.. The fine things about them i dunno, but i use fraps for stuff like that (www.fraps.com). __________________________

i used to have the same problem with my gforce 4 ti 4600 the sun would shine through my ship and every thing else, i downloaded the latest devastator drivers and its fixed, so it may be as simple as dowloading and installing the freshest driver sets for your cards

I use a Radeon 9500pro, a slightly older and cheaper card than other ATI products mentioned so far. And I've got no complaints with speed and image quality. *restrains self from kickstarting an ATI vs nvidia flamewar*

I'm using a GeForce 3 Ti500, and the game runs great at 1280x1024, although the small text kills my eyes. Now I run the game at 1180x864, and everything's easier to read, and still looks great.
The sun does shine through the planets. It doesn't really bother me that much because it's the only graphical prob I have atm.
I'm glad to see that the users ATI 9700 Pro cards are having a good experience, because that's the card I'm getting next. They're only about 200 bucks now!

Put advancedDevice = 1 in your prefs.ini.

problems with occlusion and several other issues can be removed with advanced GPU options tab inside EVE. Simply add this line to your prefs.ini file [cache folder]: advancedDevice=1 and an expanded tab for your GPU will show in ESC menu ingame. there change depth setting into 32bit z buffer with 8bit stencil. This should help.

Edited by: Alexis Machine on 15/01/2004 23:46:51 I downloaded the lastest nvidia drivers specific for my OS and card, yet I can only get the 44.33 (or whatever, don't feel like looking) to instal. Any other drivers and my OS crashes at start-up due to nv_display.dll errors.
I also tried the advanced options tag, and though it did improve the graphics quality a bunchload the sun still shines through.
Guess I'll just have to rotate my camera angle away from it.
*edit - I'm currently using the Nvidia Geforce 3 TI-500 as well.

Radeon 9800 Pro here, running at 1280x1024, graphics are so nice.
One thing about the Oclussion efect, is that if your framerate drops below 30... the effect is disabled.
If you wan to have the extra 3d option add advancedDevice = 1 to your pref.ini file. - Ka Dargo. [ 2005.04.10 14:41:05 ] Your 425mm Railgun II perfectly strikes Dread Pith Massacrer, wrecking for 1271.6 damage.
