After spending 2 hours learning to play EVE Online, i was harrassed, insulted and generally annoyed by no less that 10-15 players with no recourse available to new players other than the ignore function. After requesting help on a number of things from lag issues, bugs and other game mechanics from the general community, i was met with open hostility from the 'you should know' crowd.
I liken this to the 'Life begins at level 70' crowd from World of Warcraft. At least this is tolerable as you rarely ever see or hear them unless you visit a major city.
Of course, this game has a lot of promise, but far too complicated for the casual gamer. I have nothing but respect for the game and its designers. Rather, i have little to no respect for the community with which resides on the servers day and night.
From this reaction after only 2 hours spent, i have therefore cancelled my subscription.
If something had been done to quell the player harrassment issues before getting out of hand, i would undoubtedly have had a much better experience. So to sum up, the community ruined any possiblity of enjoyment from this game.

Maybe you should get out of Jita.
Sorry to hear that you got so much flak from all the 13 year old station jockeys that live in Jita 23/7, but if you got away from the hub systems, and joined a corp willing to accept new guys, your game experience would improve dramatically.
Of course, none of this matters cause you've canned your sub and so you probably can't read this.

Sorry to burst your bubble ... what would YOU know about lag issues and bugs and how would you even be able to comprehend anything beyond the tutorial after only 2 hours in ?
Furthermore ... you did pay for a game without going thru a 14/7/10 or whatever count day trial ?
And FYI ... you met 10-15 players out of roughly 200K ... Don't judge a book by it's cover ( or the game by your first encounters )

I believe this is being addressed in an upcoming patch, and new players will have it much easier when taking the first steps into the game.
I agree though, currently new players have it tough due to a minority. --- The Internet... Where men are men, women are men, and anybody under 18 is an FBI agent. |

I'm sorry to hear you had this experience, but a lot of EVE players are very friendly to newcomers. I can also recommend EVE University, which is a player run corporation that helps out new players during their first time in EVE.

Generally the ones that pick on the newbies are the ones that are failing at the game. They get beaten at every turn and feel they must find a way to make themselves feel superior to at least one person.
Been playing the game for years on and off, now taking it easy in the game so if any new guys wants a hand with something just look me up.

He is right you know. Back in the days people cared more then they do now about new players. Now new players are much more greeted* with ignorance and sometimes down right a-social behaviour if they are not in the right area/channel/etc.
But, nothing can be done about this, clock can`t be turned back 2 2 to 3 years. Pity really. ________________________________________________

Fixed it for you. On the ethical rules thing you simply fail however. I came to this game because of the playerbase, the playerbase that didn't coddle you. The learning curve is a brick wall, I'll admit that however the response of "RTFM" should be valid people are often enough simply not interesting in helping themselves and expect everything to come easy.

My experience in EvE is that you get what you give, as far as respect is concerned.
I can testify, with evidence, that EvE can be very friendly to new players. Can be.
But to be frank, you sound pretty snotty. I'll bet you gave attitude in the help channels and got repaid ten times over.

I don't consider helping new players and giving them a rifter cuddling
hell every ship I lose in PvP cost 5 mil to 30 mil to 100 mil
shelling out 200k to a new player to help them figure what what it feels like to lose "everything" or how hard or easy a mission can be is not a big deal to corperations like EvE univeristy or goon swarm

Did you do the tutorial? Because really, back when I was in the FNA, that was the main problem with lots of the new players, since they asked stupid questions like "how do I fly the ship" without doing the tutorial. If that isn't what happened, then I'm really pretty sorry at the state of affairs in this game.

Back when I joined the game I had a patron... a vetran player who brought me to the game, showed me a few basic things, and pretty much let me follow my own course.
I didn't have much problem with haters in the nuub channels because I simply closed the tabs after the first ten minutes of mindless spam with the few worthwhile Q&A washed out by 'send me ISK for my frig/cruiser/BS, please please' that annoyed me to no end.
One thing that helps new players humongously is to have a patron. I've brought several co-workers into the game and kept them because I showed them the ropes, whereas other co-workers who tried a long time back (and I didn't know they were curious) got mystified/broke/pwnt and left after a month or considerably less.
There are several good resources for new players which most new players never really hear much about... such as the aformentioned eve-university, and the Agony Unleashed PvP school(s), among others.
By the by, patronage of some sort is the greatest help. There really should be a way for established characters to patron nuubs, even total strangers, without being helpstaff/ISD or hanging out on megaspam nuub channels. -
Life is pain...anyone who says differently is selling something. |

All I met was helpfull people, a helpfull corp who's main idea is to help newbies. Sure I met some people who tried to lure me into making mistakes but that's part of the attraction.
Iall you met was people who behave like idiots I can't help but then you either were at the wrong place (jita?) or you kinda deserved it. for instance; what does a 2 hour old player know of bugs? Also; the game caters for people to be pro active about things and work it out. If you haven't done the tutorial don't go asking around for help.

It is quite often that I go to a help channel (player run specifics or the massive general help channel) and get the 'I KNOW EVERYTHING! STFU!' guy. It's pretty sad when the math major flames/talks down to another pilot because he doesn't understand advanced quantum physics (example/exageration). The eve community as a whole isn't bad, it's those few d***heads, c***bags and f***tards that can really ruin the gaming experience, especially when said douchebags hang out in help specific channels.
I motion for heavier moderation and a zero tolerance for ***holes policy. I volunteer, cause kickin those jerks in the face would be a pleasure. --- *snip* Your signature is inappropriate for these forums, email [email protected] with a link to your signature if you have questions -Rauth Kivaro ([email protected]) |

Edited by: Laboratus on 17/06/2007 14:56:53 I'm sorry the community got you down. I'm pretty sure that when I did the tutorial, it lasted hours (4-6 or something). After that, it's propably good to join a corporation that teaches different playstyles, such as eve university or that agony thing. Anyways. Eve has one of the steepest learning curves in all of mmos and I suppose that is harsh. But I kinda like it. ___ P.S. Post with your main. Mind control and tin hats |

My initial reaction to ôrookie chatö was to look for the means to disable it. The tutorial is extensive and the website fills in what the tutorial lacks. I worked the tutorial for two nights from end to end and my remaining questions were covered at the website.
Rookie chat is not very helpful and the maturity level is low. Screaming children come to mind. It is not a good first impression though it does instill the desire to pod someone from the outset.
