I was pretty disgusted to see some FATAL guys camping a school station with a "free loot" can the other day.
I think GMs should patrol the starting stations for this sort of thing.

It is quite often that I go to a help channel (player run specifics or the massive general help channel) and get the 'I KNOW EVERYTHING! STFU!' guy. It's pretty sad when the math major flames/talks down to another pilot because he doesn't understand advanced quantum physics (example/exageration). The eve community as a whole isn't bad, it's those few d***heads, c***bags and f***tards that can really ruin the gaming experience, especially when said douchebags hang out in help specific channels.
I motion for heavier moderation and a zero tolerance for ***holes policy. I volunteer, cause kickin those jerks in the face would be a pleasure.
Agreed.
EvE is supposed to be dark and gritty, that doesn't need to include *******s. You can blow people up, steal their stuff and gank them without being a jerk. <-----------> Factional Warfare:

So...you spent 2 hours playing the game and in that time you decided that you have met and judged the entire community in EVE Online to be unfit.
K.
I came to this game from WoW, and I am very pleased with the difference between average maturity levels. Rookie help has helped me quite a bit, and the channel is also moderated most of the time... although, I'm not sure that you knew that since you did only play for 2 hours. Moderation of said channel is what quells harassment issues; contrary to your statements, I have found this game community to be very 'noob' friendly... even though the learning curve for the game itself is a bit steep. (which makes the game more interesting anyway, imo)
I am also new (my character just hit 2 weeks old), I have had some bad experiences with players in game, and have also been harassed by players in game just like you.
But.
I have had many good experiences in game; from learning to fly my ship to meeting extremely friendly people. I have been in a player corporation for about a week and they have helped much in answering any 'noob' questions I might have. Our experiences seem to be worlds apart.
That being said, did you do the tutorial? You say you spent 2 hours playing, so in that time you finished the entire tutorial and have somehow had much time to mingle with '10-15' people through way of harassment? Most people I have seen don't even start talking in channels until they finish learning the basics. If you asked in a chat channel 'game mechanic' questions like 'how do i move???' then personally, I feel as if scathing responses from the 'you should know' crowd are justified.

as with anything in life, if it was easy then it wouldnt be any fun,
playing a game as advanced and deep as what eve is isnt something you can weigh up in a couple of hours,
sorry if you did meet some less tolerant players while you were here, but take a look at the map, eve is a big ass place and there is plenty of room to move around,
i have met plenty of jerks while playing, but the `good guys` by far outweigh the `bad guys` in this game,
maybe you just needed to look a little bit harder before throwing the toys out of the pram! ------------------------------------------- |

I am also new to EvE, having a character that is only a couple of weeks old. When I first started I found the rookie chat channel a bit annoying as there was a lot of immature talk, so I closed that window and started posting in corp channel. The response was much improved.
Personally, my experience in the game is very limited but I think getting into a corp where there are people willing to help you out would be the thing to do. Try not to judge the game so quickly, find your own way.

Well, I am sad to hear this. I am also amazed to hear it. I know that my own corp is very open to noobs. Our current motto is "A noob a day keeps the boredom away" because the "silly" questions asked by those new to the game are really quite amusing and can rekindle the desire to actually play Eve and not just use it as an overprized chat program with fancy pictures.
I remember my own first days in Eve quite differently. From the first day I was helped, laughed at when asking silly questions, but always helped along. And the biggest laugh was the time I asked how to save this game... yeah, that's more than a year ago, but I still smile myself when thinking of it and it keeps me "humble" enough to accept any and all questions from a new player.
So... you were unlucky, I think. I also know that the Help channel is a great place to find help and guidance. If 2 hours has been enough for you... then I am sorry. But you should try again. Send me an eve-mail if you want. I promise you'll have no reason to regret it. We don't eat noobs - we train them and nourish them until they are strong and can go out into the world. And may the world be a better place for that.

Win!
Eve will supposedly have an upper limit to its population.. Who do you want in the game to interact with.. A bunch of guys who log on once a week to mine or run some missions or a dedicated player willing to spend the time and effort to make the game enjoyable for all..
As far as the ****ers that harrased you in the beggining well every game on the planet that has open chat has them and they generaly are the most vocal.. You just need to take the time to find some friendly types and then get invited to the private chat which is generally much more likely for having a resonable convo..

Our website has changed a wee bit since then. The following out-of-game site has our forums, help guides, audio classes (please don't listen to mine!) and all sorts of other stuff:
http://www.eve-ivy.com/
Visit in-game to set up a username and then you get access to the guides section - also you can find us in our in-game channel "EVE University".
As Wrangler says, we aim to help out new players getting to grips with the game.
There are a lot of helpful people out there in the community (we are by no means alone in our endeavours) - hopefully you can find a helpful corp and you'll soon get hooked on EVE, losing all social life and bemoaning the 1 hour of downtime that keeps you from playing (although everyone has to sleep some time I guess...)

The OP is correct, EVE is not friendly the the casual gamer for the most part. And that is why it is as good as it is. Very nearly anything goes, as opposed to ther games where everything is laid out for you, here you have to think, as you actions can have severe consequences and the only one to blame is yourself.
However, a persistent, time based, skill progression is probably the most casual friendly out there. All you gotta do is log in and change skills. Dont have to play really at all except for money to buy skill books, then you dont have to log in but to change skills. Its not like other MMOs where wife aggro can mean you dont get to run x-instance and get phat lewtz and then you have to wait a few days to get enough people to advance.
but umm yeah 2 hours? all online games have lag at some point in some places, exactly what "issue" with lag did you have that you had to ask a question? Internet + game + 700 kids in a system = lag. in every game.
furthermore, 2 hours gameplay is not enough familiarity with the game mechanics to be thinking you were being effected by a bug. even professional testers are worthless on a game until they know the mechanics of the game back and forth and then can find the stuff that isnt right.
really all it takes is a bit of thought to enjoy eve, a rarity in MMOs i know, but no more complicated than say, doing your taxes

Originally by: Cristalline After spending 2 hours learning to play EVE Online, i was harrassed, insulted and generally annoyed by no less that 10-15 players with no recourse available to new players other than the ignore function. After requesting help on a number of things from lag issues, bugs and other game mechanics from the general community, i was met with open hostility from the 'you should know' crowd.
I liken this to the 'Life begins at level 70' crowd from World of Warcraft. At least this is tolerable as you rarely ever see or hear them unless you visit a major city.
Of course, this game has a lot of promise, but far too complicated for the casual gamer. I have nothing but respect for the game and its designers. Rather, i have little to no respect for the community with which resides on the servers day and night.
From this reaction after only 2 hours spent, i have therefore cancelled my subscription.
If something had been done to quell the player harrassment issues before getting out of hand, i would undoubtedly have had a much better experience. So to sum up, the community ruined any possiblity of enjoyment from this game.
After you get so much abuse you want to abuse back. :) ---

I am sorry to hear of your experience, Cristalline. It is unfortunate that some pilots take petty pleasure in the derision of others, but here as everywhere, that is true. One can only refuse to let such individuals dictate one's enjoyment of Eve. And I recommend that you do so, because Eve is worth experiencing, and what you found is but a small, sordid part of it.
As a new pilot, many of your answers will be found in the tutorial. If you were told this in a rude manner, it only demonstrates that those who were trying to deride you couldn't help but help you. Some find the tutorial boring, but as you discover more about Eve, I think you will find that not only is the tutorial necessary, it hardly covers the bare basics of what you need to know.
If you prefer a different format for learning, or more information, then I recommend CONCORD's New Pilot Guide, which presents many issues in a clear manner.
Finally, there are several pilots in the Federal Navy Academy who can and will answer your questions. I hope that you will find us available when you are present.
Safe travels...

this game is pretty damn complicated but thats a good thing. it keeps away the 11 year olds and is generally a game for adults. Who would have thought those quadratic equations you were thought would actually come in handy?
As for the op, i feel your pain fella. Put simply you will never be able to be a major player in 0.0 warfare. Never.
There will always be people with better skills, connections and more money and whats more they will ALWAYS have better skills, connection and more money. Thats a hard bullet to bite and I can understand why peeps would be a little ****ed with this.
Even attempting to do this would require a minimum of two years investment .. two years :D. Most peeps i know wouldn't put that much investment into a job in order to get promoted so why do it in a game?
Once again its my opinion that capital ships are the ruination of eve, and the more we go down the road of soverignity and titans the harder it will be for low skilled players to stand a chance against them. This kind of limits you to empire pvp which is practically unplayable in the main hubs, and the only major player in that field the privateers were nerfed to death.
If I started now i dont think i would play, i've played for years now tho so i'll stick around in the hope that things improve. *snip* - signature removed, please email us ([email protected]) if you wish to know why. -Ivan K |

Idiotic posts like this prove the OP's point.
To the OP - Unfortunately, much of online gaming tends to consist of weeding out the bad apples from the good ones... and generally exercising maturity and consideration when many others lack any. It's a sad fact, but true. The anonymity of the Intraweb tends to bring out the true nature of some people.
The EVE community has (generally speaking) been slightly ahead of the curve in maturity and consideration. EVE is not an easy game, and the learning curve sends many people packing... which, in my humble opinion, is fine. Trial by fire strengthens the community... and filters out numerous idiots.
However, the gameworld of EVE is difficult. If dealing with miscreants and inconsiderate people in a general chat channel is going to dissuade you from playing this wonderful game... it's a safe bet that what the future in the game holds would really, really upset you.
Consider thickening your skin a bit and realizing that stupid kids are an unfortunate part of the landscape. Trust me, EVE is a game worth fighting to enjoy.

I get newbie convos from time to time, I never give them that treatment. Last week I logged in for a quick skill change before bed, spent an hour explaining EW to someone, just because of an EVE-mail. When I was new, I never got much grief from the 1-year "vets" either. I think it's just a case of asking in the wrong place. Asking for help in a hub is like asking for help in a big city IRL. No-one cares, no-one has the time, a crowd offers anonymity. Maybe go a couple of jumps off the beaten path and ask there?
