What, pray tell, does this do for EVE's sound? Will we be able to have it on now? Or is it just a little sidenote that doesn't do much... --- in EVE - Idara |

I read this in the patch notes as well. Are any of the actual sound effects themselves changing I wonder..

There are a lot of issues with the sound engine that have needed fixing for a long time. I doubt this update will fix all of them, but I bet it fixes some.
Plenty of people don't play with sound at all. I don't do fleet combat so I leave it on, and I have to say, Eve sound sucks. I hope it actually plays most of the sound effects now.

AFAIK It may fix some existing issues but it's main purpose is in preperation for surround sound.

Would be indeed nice to have a sound overhaul as well but I dont see it as a priority still. The highest priority is the need for speed to make fleet battles doable (with clever tactics). ---

Bah. In space noone can hear you scream.
I wish I had a button to set the sound to "Real". You should only hear explosions on your own ship.
And, while I'm at it, it would be cool if your ship didn't stop when you turn off your thrusters, you schould have to use brakethrusters. And no max velocity, only max acceleration.

Great, 5.1 and 7.1. And this will help how if you can't keep the sound turned on because it lags and crashes the game?

What makes me giggle is that this has to be the only sound engine in existence that lags out a game client more than the graphics engine, and yet they're loyally sticking with the same damned company --------

I hope they "fix" the laser sounds. The most horrible sound ever of a laser fx and even worse you can't control its volume either!

The sound in EVE is a joke i havent played with sound for years. Shame really cuz if there was good sound fx i think it would contribute alot to the game as it does to most other games.

Not even if you're really close to him? Space is only a partial vacuum, so surely some sound must travel through it?

The sound effects in Battlestar Galactica are good, I think they are from the perspective of the person firing the guns and from the perspective of the people getting hit (lots of hits on the hull and recoil noise). Not as if your a spectator in an atmosphere filled space like EVE, although some places are filled with gas clouds; would be cool to transition into them and all of a sudden for the sound to change to atmospheric.
Anyway back to REV II and from the test patch I didn't notice a huge difference in sound, but I wasn't looking for it at the time. I did notice that annoying sound bug when your in an Amarr station and the acoustic tones in the background start over whenever you click something on the interface!

Nope! Sound depends on the laws of fluid dynamics applying to gases. Below a certain gas pressure, this simply breaks down and you enter a ballistic regime - essentially, collisions between gases become rare enough that gas atoms are more likely to bounce off the inside of the container then collide with other gas atoms. As a result sound and similar effects can't propagate since doing something to one gas atom doesn't give you any guarantee it'll effect another and thus propagate through the medium.

hmm... true, but I think it's more like the hardware that is doing it for EVE since the sound engine itself does not support it (comparision page states that FMOD 3 5.1/7.1 is hardware sided only, while FMOD Ex (the most recent) is fully compatible.)
I might be wrong tho, so I better use my summon powers and call DS here so that he can enlighten us ---

I think the sounds you hear are picked up by your ship and its senors. They are converted to a sound that a human mind can understand and interact with.

Yep...no sound in space.
But if you read the backstories EVE explains why we have sound in space. As a pod pilot the neural connections (your ship and computer) overlay sound for you as they find it enhances your situational awareness. So even if you are looking the wrong way you will "hear" someone shooting at you from behind.

Partitally true. In reality you would have a max velocity too. Otherwise you could reach velocities where the slightest course changes would result in your ship getting crushed by it's on inertia.
