Edited by: Sathamarid on 26/06/2007 18:24:49 I have a Radeon X800 GTO. It's pretty middle of the road, but it can run Oblivion and HL2 with good framerates. Lately, running 2 accts in windowed mode means I get frame rates under 10 on both accts. Blegh, that's not playable. I tried tweaking settings, but didn't see any real improvement. Running in non-windowed gets me frame rates around 25 on both. Still not great.
So, suggest a vid card for me. I'd like to spend about $100. I can trade in my X800 for an X1650 for $100 thru ATI. Haven't checked prices but that seems reasonable. Is that card decent for eve?

I think you should wait a bit.. the cheap DX 10 cards are coming very soon, and then you can enjoy the new DX 10 Eve client.

i would stay away from the x1650.. it will be so close in performance to your card it would be hard to notice a difference

I don't want to dissuade you particularly... but may I ask what your processor is? EVE is a *very* CPU intensive game compared to how much it makes use of your graphics card. I run an X800 XT PE with dual accounts [SiSi / TQ] concurrently on a regular basis and get 40-50 fps in space all the time. This is on a Pentium-D 820. Upgrading to a dualcore processor increased my framerates by bigger leaps than upgrading my video card ever had.
I also find that ATI has about the worst Dual-Monitor support ever conceived, but your millage may vary on that one.
Now, if I were hellbent set on buying a new video card, I'd be looking for a DX10 graphics card... but there really aren't any second-gen ones on the market yet [and won't be for a time] so I'm planning on waiting. Six months from now I expect I'll be building a full system with DX10 support and a c2d or a c2q processor, but I'm waiting on the video cards for now.

I have the x1650 card and I love it. I get about 65 FPS and really nice details.
Go for it. I love this card and the way EVE looks now.

I'm pretty sure my CPU is an AMD 64 3000. Not at home now. Seems like plenty of power for what I'm doing. Usually runs between 42-47C when running 2 clients.

Are you running 2 clients at the same time? Cause I get about 50-55 FPS with my current card when only running 1 client.

You have great timing, I was just looking at new video cards:
This looked pretty sweet and it's $105 from a solid retailer: x1900 GT 256MB PCI-E
I'm using an x850xt and it get excellent performance with two clients on full screen but when I stick them in a window the frame rate drops from 70 to 10. I don't know if a new video card will solve that or if you need to change how windows allocates resources....

This is your problem. You are trying to run two eve accounts under a single core CPU.
Getting a faster video card will not help
What you need is to get another CPU. Since you already have and AMD 64, you could simply get a AMD Dual Core instead and you can keep the same video card, memory and motherboard.
For 100$ you can multiply your eve performance by at least 4.
- Get a dual core cpu - Getting a new video card will not help

QFT. If you have an A64 3000+, spending ~$100 upgrading to a dual core processor will give you far more benefit than buying a marginally better vid card. For example a S939 X2 3800+ is most likely supported by your mobo and will drop right in, giving you a nice boost while running dual clients. On one of my rigs I have a X2 3800+ (slightly overclocked) paired with a 7600GT which runs dual clients at 40-50fps. And if you have a bit more to spend, then I'd highly recommend building a new C2D system. It'll spit all over that A64 3000+

Thats what I get for not reading. I agree with spending the $100 on a new CPU. Dual Core FTW.

Edited by: Haradgrim on 26/06/2007 21:03:02 if you only want to spend $100 dollars buy something other then a video card (a new processor will probably do more good as someone else mentioned), if you can muster up the cash, get a 8800 GTX, I blew my load buying one, and now I do the same playing with it!

I used to run eve on my old pc which was also an amd64 3000+ with 1gb of ram which was fine but when i started using 2 monitors and 2 accounts it struggled, i couldn't do anything important with my main while the alt was on because it was so slow. This was with a nvidia 6600 gfx card.
I now have a core2duo 6420 and 8800 gts graphics card which runs both accounts flawlessly on 2 screens along with anything else i care to do in the background.

I just got me a new comp yesterday .
CPU = Intel E6600 dual core.
Gfx card = 640mb 8800GTS. Maybe if you sell your old one you can get this
Incidentally, do NOT be a noob like me and rub the thermal paste off . Have to go to computer store and get some more tomorrow..
