the term PVPer, PVE, PK, anti-PK, gank....this all predates wow and eve online. stop being stupid.
That doesn't mean those terms have a place in EVE. I never said WoW in particular, i mainly stressed from games that ARE NOT EVE.
hello? those terms were born when massive multiplayer online games came out- and eve is just another game in that format- so yes these terms do have a place in eve.
Hi! What game are you playing?
eve is just another online game
Meridian 59- came out back in 1996 and had tons of pvp in it. PK, PVE, PVP started then Ultima Online came out in 1997- again the same terms where used...newbie was what "l337" people called noobs. everquest came out in 1999- Mobs started to be used- and all of the same terms as above. newbie was transformed into newb....
eve is not special sorry
So in all these games you were allowed kill anyone anywhere anytime once you accept the consequences, there was no hard distinction between a PvPer and PvEer (generally known as 'PvP flag'), going around randomly attacking people 'for the lulz' was not only acceptable but a common lifestyle choice, and all the biggest non-PvP collaborative efforts ('empire building') had to, by design, be undertaken in an area of the game world with no rules whatsoever?
Oh, ok then.
yep pretty much- but then people started to get ****ed off. then UO split the shard into trammel (carebear land) and normal land.
Everquest followed suit with PVP and non PVP servers.
Eve online is a lot like how UO was in the past- but had a built in trammel(empire) from the start.

Well... again... according to the ppl that MAKE this game, at least the term PVP DOES have a plave in EVE after all: The environment plays a big part but EVE is a "PvP" game.

I laughed when he said there is no PvPers but there are Carebears. If he really wanted to make a point he should replace all occurances of PvPers with Carebears and visa-versa, in his original post.

Edited by: Sian Tairnesh on 27/06/2007 09:10:29 I have said this before, and it still holds true: By the standards of the often-quoted post of oveur, every single online game is a PvP game. Because you always compete with other players. The only PvE games would be single player games. And I, personally, think that makes the whole distinction quite obsolete. So if you use the term PvP, if you don't relate to combat exclusively, you shouldn't be using it at all IMHO.
That being said I'm astonished as to how narrow-minded some people can get. I really wish everyone in EVE would accept the fact that there are people who enjoy the game without blasting other player's ships into oblivion. You don't have to understand it, but it would be nice if you wouldn't treat that playstile as something inferior. --------------------------------------------
We're sorry, something happened. -Sincerely, CCP |

"PvP" isn't only direct person to person combat, it can be very indirect. Selling an item on the market which somebody buys from you is resulting in another guy not getting a sale. You're competing in price and supply.
So... according to the makers of the game... not so much...
Oveur only said that to make miners feel better about themselves.

"Guild" and "Crafters" sound out of place in Eve, primarily because it's not a medieval knights and armour setting.
"Mob" I think doesn't sound untoward. It was used heavily in DAoC but I don't ever hear it used in relation to Eve, so don't use it myself.
If you want the one MMOG term that really grates me, it's "Toon".

Eve is PvP All the Time. Period. It has nothing to do with Combat. The Oveur quote says it all. Unless you only do missions and never sell anything to anyone you are engaging in PvP. When you get it into your head that PVP is EVE on hard mode "which is a thrill to put ships on the line". Therefore there is going to be at least some elitism. Very few PVPers look at carebears and say "your an idiot for doing it" and that most are in fact saying "I just don't get why anyone would want to, it's not nearly as exciting". Just way too many carebears incorrectly interpret it as the first one.
Also some words simply don't have a place here. Although PVP in my opinion is not one of them. ________________

Yes especially for those of us old enough to of done the old BBS multiplayer games. :-)
Toon comment I agree on. Crafters I also agree on. "Guild" well several MMORPGS call it a different things(Corp, Clan, etc...) it still has very similar function.

I dont wish to shock some of you but *gasp* there were many games around BEFORE world of warcraft that used terms such as mobs, guilds, crafters, pvp/pve, pking etc.
So to say these are "imported" from world of warcraft is very false they are used way before world of warcraft was even being created.
I see PvP and PvE as acceptable terms for EVE because you are doing exactly what the words imply;
Player Versus Player Player Versus Enviroment
PKing is one i dont use, and havent used since i was about 14 playing my first ever PC game (gogo runescape) but you are still by the definition of the word Player Killing.
Guild isnt acceptable because you're not in a guild, you're in a corporation and i can see why this annoys people.
Having played several RPG's i never liked the term "mob" myself i prefered just to say NPC i dont really know that much about EVE, my character is a year old and i've played only a fraction of that and i've never understood why the NPC's are called rats but i use it anyway since it seems to be the universally used term.
The immaturity in the OP's post is quite clear to see, im not going to say something like "christ you must be like 13" because i've seen 13 year olds far more mature than 20+ year olds and i think maturity is only relative to age up to a certain point.
However what i will say to the OP is.. grow the f*ck up.

True.
Quote: PKing is one i dont use, and havent used since i was about 14 playing my first ever PC game (gogo runescape) but you are still by the definition of the word Player Killing.
I hear that term more with fps. My son plays RS. My first computer game (Apple ][e) was probably Ultima 1(The First Age of Darkness). First BBS game would of been LORD or Asylum(Food Fight was also funny and TradeWars). On the Vic20 though it was Galaxia and PacMan.
Quote: Guild isnt acceptable because you're not in a guild, you're in a corporation and i can see why this annoys people.
True however they have similar functions. As noted here: http://www.eve-online.com/faq/faq_06.asp
So perhaps their own definition helps perpetuate the cross use of the term.
Quote:

I tend to perfer the term NPC as well but that dates back to games such as AD&D and Top Secret.

You should ban your son from that game, it ruin's lives! way back when i first saw it, it was still 2d and arguably a much better game.. the pvp was more fun atleast.. i used to shake when pvping because if you die you lose everything :( it was the sole reason i bought my first PC.. to play that game.(i believe my first PC was something like 1.3ghz AMD, 128mb RAM and onboard graphics) anyway when it went 3d i left, played CS for a while then moved onto MMO games and have since lost 2 jobs failed my last year of school and wasted alot of time sitting around doing nothing. fortunatly i have my priorities correct now but it took long enough.

Really? Even Eve has a form of true PvE: Missions. Since they are instanced, you are not competing with anyone else. Contrast this to mining, where a dedicated miner fleet can deny entire belts to other people.
Instanced content removes the indirect competition with other players, and I was under the impression that instancing is common in 'most MMOGs'. -

EVE is exactly what you make it.
A universe full of pray and predators, a huge sparkling market full of opportunities, a world of customers and competitors, vast areas of the unknown or hidden etc. etc. all of the above and more or a combination of those you find the more interesting.
With that in mind, of-course simple labels as pvp and non-pvp do simply not make sense in such a universe.
