Edited by: Fresh Prinz on 26/06/2007 22:12:51 maturity is an illusion imposed by the society that believes it is free, working every day earning money as a pointless task.. trying to work your way up in the world that others have built.. when you should build your own.
the mind is a wonderful thing in all it's aspects.. the freedom to think as you wish and not have others change your mind.. the only problem is that the mind is easily influenced into doing what others want.. creating the thoughts you feel are right is quite a hard thing to do but once you have set your mind in a state at which you're comfortable.. where there isn't always that niggling feeling that something isn\t quite right you will reach enlightenment.
Do not be fooled into thinking as others do.. be free and live like a butterfly.

Funny related facts:
1) Many so called low-sec/0.0 PvPiers are 99% of the time in high sec empire mission hubs. My location agent don't lie.
2) Many of them say mission running should be eliminated. Yet, they have excelent standings with all level 4 agents in game.
3) Many say they PvP every day, and yet they don't appear much on any killboard (google ftw).
4) Most of them say that EVE PvE must die, yet they go to mmorpg.com and vote for EvE as "best PvE Game".

PvP is pretty acceptable EVE parlance. Anytime you go head to head with another player, it's PvP. Today, I did no PvPing- I PvE'd myself some missions. Other days, I go out PvPing. Makes perfect sense.
PKing, on the other hand, is a really irritating term. --------

There is actually pvp and non pvp actions in the game.
PVE, trading(or hauling actually), etc etc.
You don't have to fight if you don't want to.
Heck, i've been in only one fight i didn't want to be in and that was a silly mistake(in 0.0 to jump without checking the water). And i've been around a bit.
So yeah, i have a problem with being serious, but it's the almost smallest problem i have. |

okay. let me cut this out. P = Player V = Versus E = Equipment.
PvP = Player Versus Player. yes this is pvp, where a player kills another player. PvE = This is where a player dont do anything with otherplayers, Trading, mission running or ratting is PvE.
in eve you will most likely find the pvp zones to be 0.4 and below, much like you have safe and unsafe zones in wow.
however you cant suicide in secure space, this can only be done in wow if you get the target to accept duel, and then trick a Mob into killing him, or simple if he gets a hit after you win, "happens alot" :)

I've lived in 0.0 for over a year, i even made an Un-dictionary of terms that should stay in WoW, EQ, ect. PVP wasn't one of them because it really does fit. I consider myself a PVPer simply because there is no better term to differentiate someone from the carebears. Now PKing THAT doesn't apply in EVE, but PVP is used by myself and A LOT of other 0.0 dwellers simply because it fits well. ____________

We consider almost every activity in EVE to be "PvP". We've touched on this before, the basic example always used is that, you as a pilot doing a mission for an agent ties into a lot of elements where you are competing with other players. "PvP" isn't only direct person to person combat, it can be very indirect. Selling an item on the market which somebody buys from you is resulting in another guy not getting a sale. You're competing in price and supply.
So... according to the makers of the game... not so much...

Like 'guild', 'mobs', 'crafters'... I haven't even played WoW (or any other MMORPG but this one), and I can still recognize stupid terms imported from WoW.
Still though, I'm not to fond of the way 'pvp' is used by most people as being synonomous with combat between players. I think any kind of game competition and interaction between players is pvp. Player versus player - there is nothing in the term that necessarily refers to combat. ------------------

Indeed, it's a player-driven market. Most trading is very definitely done with other players. ------------------

the term PVPer, PVE, PK, anti-PK, gank....this all predates wow and eve online. stop being stupid.
PVP is anytime you engage "in combat" with another player.
PVE is anytime you engage NPCs/trade skills/anything that is NOT player vs player.
PKs gank PVPers and PVErs. A PK can be a PVPer or a PVEr.

So in all these games you were allowed kill anyone anywhere anytime once you accept the consequences, there was no hard distinction between a PvPer and PvEer (generally known as 'PvP flag'), going around randomly attacking people 'for the lulz' was not only acceptable but a common lifestyle choice, and all the biggest non-PvP collaborative efforts ('empire building') had to, by design, be undertaken in an area of the game world with no rules whatsoever?

EVE may be another MMO, however the ground apon which many of those very things PKing in particular are different in EVE. The very definitions of many of those terms don't apply in EVE because the ground they stand on is completely different in EVE. Not nessissarily because the whole game is different.
edit: would just like to add on this thread is best supported/detailed by the thread directly above it. and together they make a mighty point. ____________

Oh, ok then.
yep pretty much- but then people started to get ****ed off. then UO split the shard into trammel (carebear land) and normal land.
Everquest followed suit with PVP and non PVP servers.
Eve online is a lot like how UO was in the past- but had a built in trammel(empire) from the start.

Edited by: Sian Tairnesh on 27/06/2007 09:10:29 I have said this before, and it still holds true: By the standards of the often-quoted post of oveur, every single online game is a PvP game. Because you always compete with other players. The only PvE games would be single player games. And I, personally, think that makes the whole distinction quite obsolete. So if you use the term PvP, if you don't relate to combat exclusively, you shouldn't be using it at all IMHO.
That being said I'm astonished as to how narrow-minded some people can get. I really wish everyone in EVE would accept the fact that there are people who enjoy the game without blasting other player's ships into oblivion. You don't have to understand it, but it would be nice if you wouldn't treat that playstile as something inferior. --------------------------------------------
We're sorry, something happened. -Sincerely, CCP |

Eve is PvP All the Time. Period. It has nothing to do with Combat. The Oveur quote says it all. Unless you only do missions and never sell anything to anyone you are engaging in PvP. (Screwing someone out of sale because your lot of 20 million Tritanium sold for .01 isk lower than you competitors is Screwing him over, Business is Combat, just on different battlefield and anyone who thinks otherwise is deluding themselves. When you get it into your head that PVP is EVE on hard mode "which is a thrill to put ships on the line". Therefore there is going to be at least some elitism. Very few PVPers look at carebears and say "your an idiot for doing it" and that most are in fact saying "I just don't get why anyone would want to, it's not nearly as exciting". Just way too many carebears incorrectly interpret it as the first one.
Also some words simply don't have a place here. Although PVP in my opinion is not one of them. ________________

Yes especially for those of us old enough to of done the old BBS multiplayer games. :-)
Toon comment I agree on. Crafters I also agree on. "Guild" well several MMORPGS call it a different things(Corp, Clan, etc...) it still has very similar function.

I dont wish to shock some of you but *gasp* there were many games around BEFORE world of warcraft that used terms such as mobs, guilds, crafters, pvp/pve, pking etc.
So to say these are "imported" from world of warcraft is very false they are used way before world of warcraft was even being created.
I see PvP and PvE as acceptable terms for EVE because you are doing exactly what the words imply;
Player Versus Player Player Versus Enviroment
PKing is one i dont use, and havent used since i was about 14 playing my first ever PC game (gogo runescape) but you are still by the definition of the word Player Killing.
Guild isnt acceptable because you're not in a guild, you're in a corporation and i can see why this annoys people.
Having played several RPG's i never liked the term "mob" myself i prefered just to say NPC i dont really know that much about EVE, my character is a year old and i've played only a fraction of that and i've never understood why the NPC's are called rats but i use it anyway since it seems to be the universally used term.
The immaturity in the OP's post is quite clear to see, im not going to say something like "christ you must be like 13" because i've seen 13 year olds far more mature than 20+ year olds and i think maturity is only relative to age up to a certain point.
However what i will say to the OP is.. grow the f*ck up.

It doesnt matter much cuz fresh is on permaban I think after the 6T3 thread... I know of at least 5 mails that got sent to CCP cause of his trolling there.

"Guild" and "Crafters" sound out of place in Eve, primarily because it's not a medieval knights and armour setting.
Interesting... Oh, what's this: Is that a medieval shield?
Gosh a medieval suit of armor =>
Oh and we kill rats in EVE too!

True.
Quote: PKing is one i dont use, and havent used since i was about 14 playing my first ever PC game (gogo runescape) but you are still by the definition of the word Player Killing.
I hear that term more with fps. My son plays RS. My first computer game (Apple ][e) was probably Ultima 1(The First Age of Darkness). First BBS game would of been LORD or Asylum(Food Fight was also funny and TradeWars). On the Vic20 though it was Galaxia and PacMan.
Quote: Guild isnt acceptable because you're not in a guild, you're in a corporation and i can see why this annoys people.
True however they have similar functions. As noted here: http://www.eve-online.com/faq/faq_06.asp
So perhaps their own definition helps perpetuate the cross use of the term.
Quote:

I tend to perfer the term NPC as well but that dates back to games such as AD&D and Top Secret.

You should ban your son from that game, it ruin's lives! way back when i first saw it, it was still 2d and arguably a much better game.. the pvp was more fun atleast.. i used to shake when pvping because if you die you lose everything :( it was the sole reason i bought my first PC.. to play that game.(i believe my first PC was something like 1.3ghz AMD, 128mb RAM and onboard graphics) anyway when it went 3d i left, played CS for a while then moved onto MMO games and have since lost 2 jobs failed my last year of school and wasted alot of time sitting around doing nothing. fortunatly i have my priorities correct now but it took long enough.

Because you always compete with other players. The only PvE games would be single player games.
Really? Even Eve has a form of true PvE: Missions. Since they are instanced, you are not competing with anyone else. Contrast this to mining, where a dedicated miner fleet can deny entire belts to other people.
Instanced content removes the indirect competition with other players, and I was under the impression that instancing is common in 'most MMOGs'. -

EVE is exactly what you make it.
A universe full of pray and predators, a huge sparkling market full of opportunities, a world of customers and competitors, vast areas of the unknown or hidden etc. etc. all of the above and more or a combination of those you find the more interesting.
With that in mind, of-course simple labels as pvp and non-pvp do simply not make sense in such a universe.

LOL he's 15 and an A and B student in most courses. He's been asked to manage a few sports teams, and wants to find a job. He does play the game a lot and he's using a 1.6GHz machine I think with 256M ram, Geforce2 card, so alittle slow.
Also when he's bad I do the typical modern parent thing. I have the router and cable modem in my room. So he gets time restricted or removed. It is a great motivator.
