It just kills my computer for the several seconds it's trying to load the movie - very poor mouse response, everything locks up for a second or two...once it loads and I get past it into the actual game everything is fine.

It's mostly annoying when I log on all my accounts in quick succession to update skill queues and then I have to wait through the inordinately long opening time several times in a row.

I haven't had this issue with any previous loading screen splash art - and I think Crucibles is different because it's more of a movie than just a static image.

Is there any way to disable/bypass this and just have a black box with the log in information?

Can't change login screen but if you also mean the intro movie, ESC/General Settings/Show Introduction Movie <- uncheck

Failing that, don't be so damned impatient

I too would like to know if there is answer to this: exactly as the OP, the splash screen really really eats up resources in a way that the proper game does not, and opening up several clients in quick succession is now such a pain (whereas before, as the OP correctly points out, it did not before).

This is probably an unpossible thing to do but it would be nice if you can. God knows, I'm sick of waiting for the client to load to see those two damn ships flying around :P

If you are talking about client loading time (which I think you are), its nothing to do with either the splash screen or the intro movie.

The client is verified every time you start it up to ensure none of the libraries or modules have been substituted. This started around March 2010 when CCP got a malware expert in-house (damned if I can remember his CCP "name" though) and its been taking a bit longer to load ever since.

You can verify this is the case by opening up the resource monitor in Windows 7 and looking at the disk activity. There's also the Intel VTune tool which will give you much much more info.

tl;dr - its not the intro/splash screen, its the client self-checking

I can't speak for the OP, but my PC certainly isn't that aged at all - and indeed, with the Dominion release, the client was as fast as starting up as it had been at Trinity (for me, at least). So something is definitely afoot.

I meant March 2011 not 2010. Its around the time that CCP Sreegs did a presentation to Fanfest on botters etc.

It is client self checking and if you launch several in quick succession I can see cpu0 getting hammered on a multicore system.

cpu0 in Windows is the cpu which has the scheduler running, deals with disk i/o, graphics (in ring0 for which MS ought to be eternally damned) and a load more kernal modules, probably antivirus too.

I can get a 4 core Windows 7 machine to become very very choppy on graphics just by maxing out a usenet client while restricting it to cpu0 and having antivirus set to the highest heuristic level.

If I then repeat the test with the usenet client restricted to cpu1 then the desktop remains responsive.

If you're at all techie then get a trial version of VTune and its pretty obvious whats eating up cpu time while Eve loads.

I often see another login screen background a second before the crucible one starts, maybe related.
Oh and to answer your post.

I'm a huge fan of getting games to run their best in every aspect.

So naturally I want to get rid of that stupid animated background, to something a little more low key, especially considering it doesn't look that great on my monitor.

I'd like for CCP to tune their client a bit and give the option to turn off more bells and whistles, such as the Crucible starting screen. Had the same problem with Incarna's too, slowed logging in to a crawl.

Every once in a while I need to log in while at work - in the past I'd use RDP to my home computer and it worked fine, but ever since Incursion the animated login screens eat up so much network bandwidth that remote login is impossible; I never get access to the login fields.

Would be nice to be able to disable it. Would be nicer if I could remember to add skills to training queue BEFORE I leave for the office

It's not the self checking: my games launched and loaded the splash screen instantly pre crucible.

Immediately after crucible, with the new animated splash... movie? with the ships flying around...it takes FOREVER to get a client to launch. Trying to launch several in quick succession is extremely irritating now.

Dev spoke on this once... dev said that the splash screen/login screen access hardware in a more direct (read intensive) way than gameplay does so that it can load faster as a quick login screen. In other words, they throw all your hardware at it and hope it works rather than optimizing it to load and run effeciently.

What I still haven't decided is if it's better to figure out ways to deny EVE permission access to the files involved, or if it's better to b!tch on the forums until CCP stops doing sh!tty stuff. (with portraits I deny EVE permissions, when I probably should have kept b!tching.)

my i7 has also voiced displeasure at the stuttery slow loading speed of the animation ot whatever is making it all herky jerky
The American public's reaction to the change was poor and the new cola was a major marketing failure. The subsequent reintroduction of Coke's original formula, re-branded as "Coca-Cola Classic", resulted in a significant gain in sales, leading to speculation that the introduction of the New Coke formula was just a marketing ploy

Well with crucible 1.1 this has gotten much worse.

But perhaps there is hope! Now there is an error message about a C++ runtime library being loaded incorrectly. Game still loads and runs just fine...could this be what is causing the slowdown?
