EVE's settings are constantly being reset to the game's defaults. Not just a couple settings either, every single setting is reset. This happens once a day at least among the usual game crashes. I also currently have a petition open for the game crashes that has not been answered for 3 days now. Seeing as how I am *trying* to play the trial, this is having a bad impact on what I think about the game. Three of my days are burned out.
Also, is there a way to force EVE into saving the cache/settings/coredumps/etc directories under the actual EVE directory?

I also get this. I have multiple copies of EVE folders, one for each account. It happens almost every day for each of the clients. I run all of them with the "/end /LUA:OFF" switches. I tried to reproduce the reset, but still don't have an idea why/when it actually happens.
I have backups of the cache/Settings folder, but it's annoying like hell to go replace that stuff every day 3 or 4 times.

I'd like ccp to address this. Please fix without a work around that is not all the way functional. I'm not demanding or anything of that nature, but obviously there is a problem there. Thanks :)

Pilk thanks, but no thanks. The notion is appreciated, but honestly the solution must be hard coded, by CCP. I do think that CCP should take your fix and use to patch their program. I am not savy enough to fix your solution once CCP decides to make another change. That and they should fix their product not me :)

I'm running XP and if I right-click the Eve shortcut, then select "run as", then uncheck the box where it says "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity", everything seems to be OK. The problem is, you have to remember to do this each time you open the client.

Batch files and command line arguments are not a solution. I'm really doubting that I will continue playing this after the trial ends. It's not enjoyable to have to reset all my window locations and sizes along with all my video and game settings every day if not more.
I also think it's ludicrous that a game's setting become corrupted on a single crash. Get it together.

Are you starting with the .bat every time? Check to make sure the shortcut you're using uses the .bat and not the .exe (it should pop up a black command-prompt window for a few moments before launching Eve).

Sometimes it works for a whole week, sometimes it resets twice a day. Easily identified by saved settings starting in windowed mode, and reset ones in full screen. So I at least get a warning lol...

I too have these problems. Its not every single time I log in, but at least once a day.
I tried without the LUA thing, and with, and am currently using the bat file and it still happens.
Is there any way to permanently change the default settings, so that when it resets to default, its actually reseting to MY settings?

Looks like i've solved the glitches issue, but now i'm getting this on one of my clients. The weirdness is, it relocates between clients every once in a while, and only if both characters are outside. If one is docked or docks, white background is instantly replaced by normal background. Also white background comes along with mighty framerate drop. Any ideas?

Edited by: Talken on 05/07/2007 06:41:40 Someone seriously needs to take a look at this. Sometimes it's every single one of my settings that get reset...sometimes only part of my overview settings are reset. It seems completely random as to when or what gets reset. It is very frustrating to have to go back through and reset everything constantly.
[EDIT1] And to clarify it's not just my overview. Sometimes it's my wallet settings, my chat window settings or bookmark folders. One set of things may be fine for several days while everything else is reset or they could all be completely wiped out. I've done fresh installs, tried copying the settings/cache folder and anything else I can think of and nothing seems to work.

Honestly CCP... If you think you're moving forward with your game by adding more stuff in, well... you're wrong. You won't get it right before fricking basic functionality is properly implemented! Is it me, or are we constantly moving backwards making our beloved game more difficult in terms of usability?
I used to get my settings reset after crashes etc pre-patch, but that was sort of understandable. Now it happens even after normal client exits.
Today I logged on and got my settings reset on one of the two accounts.... guess what... I couldn't be arsed to redo them and logged off

Perhaps it would be a good idea if more of these settings were stored on the server?
For example, it drives me nuts losing my folders in my People and Places.
I can understand that graphics and audio are volatile enough to warrant keeping local, but things that shouldn't change from one computer to another... shouldn't change from one computer to another. I'm not going to say "Because I logged in at a friends house, and his computer is slower than mine, I shouldn't categorize my bookmarks this way."
If it was ONLY my graphics and audio settings vanishing all the time, I don't think I'd have looked for this post... at least not for a couple weeks longer. Don't mind me, I'm made up. |

I found this only started with me when I created the Testserver copy of my TQ folder.
I think it may be to do with the Singularity settings overwriting the TQ settings because their cache points to the same location... or something.
I've deleted my Singularity folder, and will check what happens once DT completes.

Okay I just found my own 'workaround' to this: I made a copy of the settings folder that works and out it somewhere. Thankfully, right after logging off and on again after copying, the settings were gone again. So I logged, copied the backup settings back to where they came from, logged in again, et voila, next login had normal settings again. Definitely faster than manualy setting them all right again.
Conclusion for me: Sometimes closing the client nukes the settings for whatever reason. Of course this workaround is kinda inconvenient, so I really wish CCP would fix it.

Thanks but CCP needs to address this. We appreciate the work arounds, but neither solve the problem, just make things more complicated to play something that was not broken a week ago. It is their code that is broken somewhere and they basically have to make the change :) Thanks again though.

Well add me to the list of affected XP players... ever since Rev 2 was rolled out 3/4 of my bio simply vanished, my drone groups are gone, all of my custom overview settings went bye bye, and unless I set the overview to show all standings of any kind everyone in local appears as neut to me. I already lost one ship at a gate when none of the real neuts appeared in my overview. Which means my overview is not only without any custom settings but is now completely filled with alliance/gang/corp ships during pvp. Oh, and this happens at each login...lovely.
I've tried all of the cache renaming suggestions I could find on the forums. And while Im sure the author of the .bat workaround is an honest and well meaning person I simply will not install code from an unknown individual to solve a problem which should clearly be resolved by CCP.
This issue is driving me nuts - is there an "official" CCP thread about this somewhere?

Happens to me too. XP Pro.
I'd love a response on this. It's a tossup whether I'll get my overview settings / graphics settings / UI theme colours / etc. Back when I log in, or whether they'll simply disappear and I'll have to start again. Sometimes it's my main, sometimes it's my alt. EveLauncher used to be able to distinguish between the two clients, which one I logged my main in and which one I logged my alt in (the login names were persistent, in the drop down box, and seperate). Now, on startup, they both say the same thing, whatever character last logged in, regardless of which client was used, has their name in the dropdown for both clients.
If you think it sounds confusing, trust me, it is.
Does not occur consistently, or reproducibly. But occurs. And drives me crazy. Please just put it back to whatever it was before you broke it. -- I do not speak for my corp, or my alliance. |

I will try that user account approach now, at least then I know the settings will be in separate folders.
And why is this not on the known issues page? Does CCP even read this forum at all?

The Nuclear Option - Complete Settings Wipe
If this doesn't solve your problems, either you're doing it wrong, or CCP has a very-insidious bug on their hands.
Okay, if you haven't tried my .bat, then all you need to run do is shut down Eve (completely! CTRL-ALT-DEL, click the processes tab, check the "show all users" box, and look for any "exefile.exe"), and then, on the Start menu, choose Run..., and type in the following (including the quotes): (For XP:) "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\" (For Vista:) "%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\CCP\"
Delete (or rename, if you want to keep it as a backup) the ENTIRE Eve directory. Take no prisoners.
If you've run my .bat, you'll also want to hit: "C:\Program Files\CCP\Eve\UserProfile\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP" (replacing C:\Program Files\CCP\Eve\ with the appropriate directory if you've changed the install location)
Now, take a moment to: 1) Check your computer's date/time, and 2) Make sure you're running with administrative privileges
Now run Eve. Your settings will be completely reset, but if you change a setting, it should now stick. If it doesn't, then there's something seriously f*'ed up and we can debug the problem and take it to CCP.

Not just a couple settings either, every single setting is reset. This happens once a day at least among the usual game crashes. Seeing as how I am *trying* to play the trial, this is having a bad impact on what I think about the game. Four of my days are burned out.
I have tried appending /end /LUA:OFF and that only partially solves the problem. A large majority of my settings still get randomly reset to the defaults. My game does crash a lot and the petition for that issue has gone unanswered for 4 days (I really don't find that acceptable).

If my solution doesn't work, then say so, and I'll try to get it fixed. Just because you're experiencing a problem doesn't mean it's CCP's fault; indeed, it might be beyond their ABILITY to fix. To paraphrase a good friend of mine, there is no magical wand of fixing, and it's not powered by forum "/signed"s. I'm handling the low-level, fixable stuff. If that doesn't solve the problem, then we can take a unified front to CCP, instead of having them solve 90% of the problems and leave 10% of us in the dust.
Or, to put it more bluntly: your tone is insulting, your solution doesn't work, and your goal is contradicted by your intent.
Originally by: Major Stallion hey um....i have a question that may be slightly off topic....but what is this?
/end /LUA:OFF
and what does it do?
It's a command-line switch (actually, two) that tells the Eve client to store the cache and settings in the client's local "cache" folder. Note that screenshots and logs still go to your %USERPROFILE% directory, under My Documents\EVE.
Oh, and "LUA" stands for Less-privileged User Account. It's a Microsoft term.

I updated it with an additional step, upon further consultation with some players in another thread. As I stated in it, please remember that this will completely remove your settings; the idea is to force the client to re-create them without whatever silly bit is in there that's preventing them from being updated correctly.
And, no, the bio is definitely server-side. I think it got hit with the same nerfbat that hit EVEMails a while back. Note that even hidden markup--things like color, bold, web links, etc.--counts against your character limit. From what I understand, though, if you don't edit your bio, it'll keep its longer length, just as old EVEMails still have their full text. But as soon as you add so much as a carriage return, it'll get truncated down to the new max limit.

I have the same issues in Vista. My character skills screen will just not stay closed. I dock, it comes back, I undock, it comes back, I jump through a gate, it comes back. My petition answers are "I am sure that a fix will be in the next patch." That is not an answer, that is a put off. This is going beyond annoying and affecting game play. Lovely, just lovely. It happened again. With using the 'different users for different accounts' fix. It had been working for 3 days and I was full of hope, but no dice. My comp bluescreens, and after restart all settings nuked yet again. What the hell is going on? Are the settings deleted upon login and only rewritten when you exit the client, but if you crash they're gone? But that can't be since they are not nuked with EVERY crash... This is really driving me nuts, how can settings that are saved on HD be lost like this so often? It makes zero sense to me. Of course, I am fairly sure windows has its dirty hands in there somewhere, which is why I NEVER store anything in the fkn my documents folders if I can help it, and I wish EVE would give me the option not to (and /end /LUA:off is not good enough, no.)

My .bat definitely solves that part of the problem, at least; nothing gets written outside the Eve installation's folder.

I HAVE A WORK-AROUND !!! It may not be perfect, but it works...
PART 1 OF 2:
For the most part, it should be a little easier than a couple other suggestions; especially for those who run more than one client at a time on Windows. I've been dealing with this for some time, since the last major update; I think it was RevII.
I remember the DEVs saying long ago, if you're having problems after a major update, DELETE EVERYTHING in EVE's cache folder.
Since I have characters in two different corporations, it's a pain when my settings are corrupted or wiped out somehow, and I loose all of my settings in corporation hangers; [ie: placement, size, and 'unlocked', etc.].
Some quick notes:
NOTE: Remember, the path to files and folders will be different on your system, since I don't install in default folder. NOTE: Information obtained has been researched on the OS Windows XP Pro. Vista may be different. NOTE: I added the "/end /LUA:OFF" [case sensitive w/out quotes] line to my shortcut to EVE exe file. The path in my shortcut looks like this now. "G:\EVE\eve.exe /end /LUA:OFF".
This IS NOT actually necessary for this workaround to work, I'm just stating my EVE's current setup. I only did that to help reduce the different locations EVE files are in to the pre-REVII patch.
Additional Notes about the location of your EVE's cache folder:
Since I'm using the "G:\EVE\eve.exe /end /LUA:OFF" switch in the EVE shortcut, It's using the old Cache folder location. Be sure to verify the location of the EVE cache folder on your system.
Mine is "G:\EVE\cache\". Your's MAY be "C:\Program Files\EVE\Cache\" or something to that effect; if you're using the new switch.
If you haven't used the "/end /LUA:OFF" switch on your EVE shortcut, your cache folder MAY be in: "C:\Documents and Settings\%USER%\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\cache\". Subsitute "%USER%" w/your account log-in name. It also may be in your "My Documents" folder, I can't remember since I don't use the new location w/out the new switch.
Once you have found and verified the location of EVE's Cache folder...
Here is a step by step process to backup and restore EVE's settings:
Note: Make sure there is NO instance of EVE running in the task bar and/or in task manager.
1. While viewing your EVE's Cache folder, DELETE everything in it.
This might seem as two steps back, and it is. Deleting everything in your cache folder will cause you to loose all your settings. Which your loosing anyway, the point is to start from a clean slate and progress from there.
2. Log into the character of your choice... Select ALL of your 'per-account' settings.
Log into a character, and setup your 'per account' settings; [ie: graphics, custom in-game shortcuts, space overview panel, chat panels, ships and items in hanger. Also window size & placement of your wallet, notepad/evemail, fitting window, corporation panel, etc.].
3. Now setup your 'per character' settings.... [ie: hanger, ships, items, fittin
Setup your 'per character' settings, like corporation hangers; [ie: placement, size, etc.]; and any other settings that are only saved for that specific character. You will have to travel to other stations to save those 'per character' settings for each station for all of your corporation hangers you have access/control of. If it is a great distance from station to station, you may want to backup your settings after each station visit. See below for backup suggestions.
4. With all of your 'per account' and 'per character' settings saved, for your first character selection saved; back up your cache folder.
It's suggested you do this first, before you log into other characters to setup those settings; first backup what you've already done, just in case. See the next post for backup suggestions before you continue...

PART 2 OF 2:
Backing up your EVE settings; Continued from Part 1.
Since you now have all your settings setup since your first log in after cache folder wipe, back up w/the following suggestions:
A. LOG OUT of EVE - exit the program, and be sure it's closed.
B. Use a program like WinZip, 7Zip, or equal; you can also use MS Backup, to backup your EVE's Cache folder.
It's critical that you zip your cache folder saving folder/directory PATH NAMES.
Example: To back up file(s) that is in your "C:\Program Files\EVE\cache\" directory, you'd want to make sure that you save that path. Follow the instructions with your Zip or backup program to do so. When the program saves with the folder path, and not just the file, when you restore that backup, it will follow the original directory structure and sub folder paths.
C. Choose a file name convention that will tell you at a glance when the backup was made.
Example: 07.15.07_12.30p_Cache.zip
From my file name convention, you'll notice that first there is the date I made this backup, a '_', then the time, '_', and cache. This just tells me when I made the backup, so I know w/out checking the file properties, it's for EVE's Cache, date, time, etc. Choose any naming convention you wish to use.
This is important since you will be making several backups in succession as you successfully setup each characters settings for corporation hangers and other things that are specific to that character.
5. Once you have made your backup, log into another character on that SAME account, and setup any personal settings you have for that character including any corporation hangers he/she may have access to or control.
When I say corporation hangers, I mean setting up the size, position and other settings for containers inside the different divisions inside a corporation hanger. Make sure you specify if you want each can, by default, to be locked or unlocked when Items placed in it. All of mine are unlocked by default, which is one of the main causes for me trying to find a work around.
Anyway.
6. Each time you setup your character specific settings on each character, on the same account, LOG OFF and make a backup file of your EVE's Cache folder. This is why I suggested doing them in succession, in case there are problems with settings that are saved.
If you use more than one account; regardless of if it's at the same time or not; I strongly suggest not running more than one account at a time while you are in the backup process.
Once you are done with each character on that one account, make another backup, then repeat for the other account.
This may be time consuming of course, but it's worth it for the long run.
RESTORE BACKUP !
For whatever unknown reason, your character's settings have been reverted, wiped, lost, or what ever happens to them. Now what?
1. DELETE ALL files in your EVE Cache folder, including sub-folders.
2. Open the LAST or most recent backup file that you have created in the process I've described above.
3. Restore your backup to the hard drive partition that contains the EVE cache folder;
Example: Lets say you backed up your files from "C:\Program Files\EVE\cache\", preserving the directory structure as suggested. You would simply restore your zip file backup, preserving or restoring the directory structure, to the drive "C:\".
If you used MS Backup to backup your EVE cache folder, just restore your backup to the original location.
4. Once you have restored your EVE cache folder backup, and log into your character, you'll notice that ALL the settings you saved in the backup for each character/account, have been restored.
Overall, the process may complicated, but it really isn't. I've described in detail for those who may not be 'power users' when it comes to file management, etc.
Time consuming it may be, but it's already saved me a lot of headaches; & saved me more time than it took to make.

FINAL NOTE: I haven't tried just backing up the settings folder, within the cache folder, it may be worth a try. I've chosen this method because it works best for me. See fit to tailor any suggestions I've made to your own preferences.
This is a DRAFT document, as I haven't been developing these suggestions over a period of time.
Please note, if you are not sure about certain suggestions, please ask someone for help before you make any major changes. I tend to over-explain things which confuses some people... Sorry.
Thanks, I hope this helps. It's worked out well for me so far. Any suggestions? Comments? I'd be glad to hear them.
Hope CCP finds a more long-term solution, since it sounds like it's affecting a lot of people who just use one client, like most do.

Thanks for your quick comment, But FYI:
My suggestions are not intended as a daily backup. You only backup after setting up a bunch of new settings; then backup. So if they are cleared, you wipe cache, restore, and log back in. Cya later. Fearseed Kahn Shadow of Damnation |

Just happened to me again yesterday as well. Was working OK for about a week. Worked OK through 3 or 4 client restarts yesterday. Then all of a sudden - I opened the client and saw the dreaded 1024 x 768 resolution at the character selection screen and I knew my settings were hosed (I usually run 1280 x 800).
I never run multiple clients or accounts, have never been on sisi, and am using the default installation path. XP Home edition SP-2. This all started after the last major Revelations patch. I am *this* close to implementing the nuclear option.
BTW, Thanks for your complete lack of attention to this problem CCP

That doesn't make a lick of sense, so either CCP has something REALLY weird going on (copy protection on a freely-downloadable client?) or I misunderstood what you said. Both clients were running with their own copy of my .bat file, under separate directories? If so, it's not physically possible for the one to affect the other.
Edit: Just to check, you did say you nuked it first, right?

Yes, I unistalled the game, and then deleted all settings that was left. Then I reinstalled the game and downloaded your .bat-file and used it. And everything worked fine a couple of days.
I only use one copy of the client in which I run my two accounts. I has worked just fine before rev 2 and i have a friend who do the same and he donŠt have these resets happening to him.
Soo yes: Nuked --> reinstalled game --> used -bat-file --> worked a few days --> my settings are now reset anyway :(
Perhaps I must use two different clients for the two differnt accounts then? Although it has worked just fine before rev. 2 using just one client for both accounts.

There is a known work-around. See my post on page 3 in this thread.
On page 3, it's very detailed for those who may not be computer experts.
But, in short.
1. Delete all files/folders in EVE's cache directory. 2. Log into a character and set ALL 'per account' settings. [ie: wallet, fitting, corp., personal hanger windows] 3. While in same character, set ALL 'per character' settings. [ie: corp. hangers, cans in personal & corp. hangers, etc.] 4. Log out, and use a ZIP program or MS Backup to back up the EVE Cache directory, saving files/folders > "With/Save PATHNAMES" <. 5. Log into another character on same account and set 'per character' settings. 6. Log out, make another ZIP or Backup file "saving/with pathnames". Using a different file name in each incremental save. 7. Repeat process for your other account, if you use more than one.
In each step, name the zip or backup file a different name, so it's incremental in case of loosing your settings while in process.
You only need to make a backup file once you have made major changes to settings for an account/character.
When your settings are wiped out again:
1. Delete all files/folders from cache directory. 2. Restore the most recent backup file that you've made. [ie: if your eve cache folder is on the C: drive, and you backed up your file using path names, you would simply 'extract' the file using pathnames. If you use windows backup, you just restore to the original location.
This will work until they have a long term fix for it.
See page 3 of this thread for more detailed info for those of you who are not familiar w/ the process of backing up files using a Zip program or MS Backup, and restoring them using path locations and/or original locations.

Edited by: Daliyn on 25/07/2007 21:17:54 Work arounds are all well and good, but I want a bloody fix for this major c*ck up! We all know why it's happening, and that it's not a major thing that requires thousands of lines of coding to fix. So why has this issue not even been looked at yet?

Well, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one but this still ****es me off.
It takes time to join channels, set resolutions, and then you restart the thing, it flips into fullscreen and the stupid tutorial pops up. Almost every day!
When I look at the official "issues list", this isn't even there!!! Neither is the POS shield bug.. the only issues I see on the issues list are trivial ones I don't care about.

At this point I'm doubting whether CCP is actually bothered by this bug at all. Some kind of official word would be nice though.

Not all bug are easy to fix and may involve numerous issues. The best course of action is to report the bugs and hopefully CCP and the bug hunter team will have enough information to corner the bug and squish it. - Pirlouit
