Honestly Tippia you are a confused little girl trying to justify your inevitable defeat because unless DUST is the most awesome groundbreaking FPS ever, it will lose out big time in the race for a decent playerbase. And unreal 3 engine is so dated that I doubt that will be the case. Console shooter players don't care about effecting the world, and those that like RPGs and twitch game play are a very small number.

We no longer have the situation where an FPS is an FPS is an FPS GÇö they have been segmented quite a wide spectrum of game types by now. The main difference here is the persistent world: what you do has effects on the game world, and its state is determined by the players. The games you mention have unlockables GÇö that is not the same thing as persistence. The N:th time you run a map, it will be the exact same map as the M:th time you run it. Its objectives is not set by the map, but by the agent or contractor. You are dismissing differences to such a degree that we might as well consider SS:BFE to be the same as ArmA.
Quote:Is DUST going to be 500 vs. 500 battles? That depends on how it will tie in to the territorial control aspect of the game (and EVE). It won't be 500 per map, Planetside-style, no, but it may very well end up being 500 (or more) per campaign.
Quote:Honestly Tippia you are a confused little girl Honestly, you are a clueless little house-plant who has obviously never actually played an MMOFPS, considering how so staggeringly ignorant you are about the differences between one of those and a normal FPS. Of course it will not be ground-breaking GÇö Planetside already broke that ground (aside from the cross-game interaction), but then again, neither is/was EVE, and yet here we are todayGǪ

Well to start with, a persistent charater != a persistant game. I mean how long will the amaricans and the russians be fighting over the same island/ train station/ missile silo? Dust is different. once you capture something it stays captured (untill the other guys manage to launch a counter attack)

Is this coming from a PC gamer or a console gamer? Because many of the console gamers I know (myself inculded) love RPGs and FPSs and think that Dust (if not completely effed up) will be awesome.

I'm sensing some serious negativity here. Also seeing lots of random numbers.
FPS I've played:
TF2 - Time: maybe 20 hours Brink - Time: Maybe 5 hours, and I thought that one would be super good. BFBC2 - Estimate more than 100 hours. I like it, and have a few servers that I like. Battlefield Heroes - Maybe 20-30 hours. This one is kinda fun. BF 2142 - Time: Maybe 1-1/2 hours. Hacker ridden; sucks **** CoD: Black Ops - Time: None. Never played past a few storyline missions. Some other CoD or Similar game ages ago - Maybe 20 hours on LAN. Was mostly fun, but I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it online.
Best Game: BFBC2
Pros:
- Usually no problem finding a game. - Can be fun. - Sometimes you get to play with friends. - You don't need to play with friends to have fun. - Has a ranking system and different server modes. - Maps are mostly fun.
Cons:
- Not persistent. Contrary to the statement above; the only thing persistent is your online ID and available gear. - Hackers. - You have to be really good to get up there, or be really patient. - Easy to get pwned by guys who play regularly.
Dust 514 doesn't fit into this genre; though there are some elements that make it similar. I've never played MAG, Warhawk, or Planetside 2; so I can't speak for them. Haven't even more than briefly glanced at them actually. |

I'm pretty sure that CCP/Sony will ensure that Dust 514 will have a PS4 version ready for launch, especially since they probably have two or more years to do it in (the PS4 is still a long way off) |

Too long to delay release unfortunately. Chances are, it will be one of the first MMO titles at release of PS4 that is available however. That would be a good move, and I think, (Provided Sony doesn't make this harder than it has to be), there will be little effort in moving from the PS3 platform to PS4 for CCP/Dust.
PS4 should just be a hardware upgrade in most respects. Certainly, they have higher end hardware available now for that platform, and OS software really just needs the updates for that to move up the chain. New UI features and background to shiny it up will of course happen.
I've had a PS3 since they announced Dust to be Exclusive to that platform, as I bought it maybe 2-3 days later or something. Frankly, aside from random freezes of the OS; I've not had much issues with it.
It's never in game or when I'm watching a movie, so the only really annoying part is hitting the power button and waiting for it to dee-dee-dee and shutdown so I can reboot it.
Happened since day 1, and apparently Sony has accomodated for it in their OS, by having a feature that verifies and repairs system files/memory on reboot if it thinks it's neccessary. Also, it asks if you'd like to send a report to Sony. I do.
Okay, for a ~$300 console, that's not bad; I've had more problems with windows. |

The OP doesn't even who is this "Asian partner" the spokesman mentioned in the video right?
The 9, or "the 9th city" if translate directly from Chinese text, is the same "Asian partner" that ran World of Warcraft into ground in China mainland. They managed to release Wrath of the Lich King expansion in the second half of 2010, 2 years after the global release in 2008. This directly leads to the decision of Blizzard to change service provider of WOW in China mainland from the 9 to 163.com, and any further Blizzard game, such as Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty and Diablo 3 in the future.
IMO I wouldn't expect anything big from the 9. At least CCP is better than them. |

Here is what it boils down too. DUST is a FPS. No matter what you try to pigeonhole it into the fact remains that it is a FPS. For it to survive it has to be worth playing, and fun to play. All other successful FPSs are just fun to play, but the advancements in the FPS genre have gone so far away from what UE3 does I don't see it holding the attention of a FPS player.
Add all the little gimmicky tags like "MMO" and "persistent world" you want but if the game is just another FPS, like I see it to be, it will not last long. Simple as that. Try to argue it all you want, you can't prove it to me otherwise, and going by the game play vids out that is what DUST is. |

Graphics != fun (not that they don't help). It's the so called gimmicks that are usually what make or break a game, and Dust has some pretty damn huge 'gimmicks', also a genre is not a gimmick.
I'm not saying that Dust will be the best thing in the history of forever, I'm saying don't write it off untill people have actually played it, because it has potential |

Who said anything about graphics? I'm talking about pure game play. How responsive the controls are, how good the latency is, what kind of hit boxes the game will have. I don't know about you, but I live in the eastern US and I make it a point that servers I play on are most in this region. Are there going to be server farms all over the world to provide decent latency for all the players? Or are we going to be stuck with people from Cali with 300-600 ms ping or more connecting to servers in London?
A normal MMO can have a higher latency because of the way most MMOs are coded. A FPS needs the lowest possible ping you can get or else it is just not fun. Nobody likes trying to shoot at someone that is bouncing around the screen or is 1-2 seconds away from the spot you are seeing them at.
What about bullet drop and spread? Is that going to be in the game or is it going to go back to what FPS were 5 years ago where there is no skill in aiming your shots and it's just point and shoot.
What about destruction? Are we going to be able to tear down walls that people are hiding behind or is it going to be a static environment? UE3 doesn't do that well at all.

I think DUST will do quite well if it is one of the PS4 launch titles. It's not competing with COD as it is a mmofps like Borderlands - which incidentally did quite well for itself in sales despite COD and BF. If Dust is out on PS3 and then re-released as a PS4 launch title I can see it becoming quite big, especially if the graphics are on par with EVE's. |

I'm not sure Dust will rely on hit boxes the way you understand them, and the impact of latency will be different as well, or should be.
Yes, there will be Servers in various locations around the world; according to a blog some time back at any rate.
Given, it is an FPS, but the playstyle and mechanics will be very much different than what you, I, or anybody is used to. Skillpoints play a factor, rather than just gaining points on a kill ratio and ranking up; and players will have as many options in armor suits as EVE it seems, or very nearly.
Dropsuits require skills earned over time and by selection to equip, (as do weapons); and each has fitting slots, and limitations like ships in EVE do.
Dropsuits come in 4 different factions, 4 diferent types, and 3 different grades; which makes for 48 different drop suits, before any fittings are applied.
Plenty of weapons, with different weapons being available based on the type of dropsuit; and a multitude of vehicles, from Dropships, to Tanks, to LAVs with all their own fitting requirements and capabilities.
Just like EVE, you have to buy all these things; and best guess, you can lose them. Some items may be retained, but no information on that has been released that I'm aware of.

I think that's all a matter of opinion. By all appearances, the basic gmeplay is intended to model after popular shooters like BFBC2.
The difference being a huge number of maps which are apparently to be generated as needed, and the way in which you train up your character and suit-up.
Similarities are in the 4 types: Recon, Assault, Heavy Assault, and Engineer. All these have much the same tactics and strategy as you would find in other FPS.
Indications from art, would suggest that knives are available, in addition to grenades, machine guns, pistols, and Heavy weapons. Knives are very popular in my experience, and most people treasure those kills over others; though, they may be harder to achieve in Dust than other games.

Actually, WotLK was delayed because of Chinese censors. The9 had little to do with that issue.
NetEase also offered a higher stake in the revenue for Blizzard, 55% as opposed to 22% for The9, a figure they were not willing to renegotiate after their license to distribute and run WoW in China ran out. Bad decision though, i admit.
While The9 got some flak, they're not actually as incompetent as people claim. Blizzard and the Chinese government had a lot to do with what happened there. |

Since DUST 514 will be download it can run on both the PS4 and the PS3, unless Sony makes a console that isn't compatible with their latest games. (DUST isn't even out for 6-8 months)
Last time I checked, Planetside 2 was PC only, therefore it is not competing with it. If DUST would have been brought out on PC it would face direct competition from Planetside 2 therefore it it quite unlikely they will release a PC version, they would face direct competition from a known game (the first had quite a fanbase, I played it also) and big player in games (Sony). Sony is now more of an ally publishing and promoting DUST on it main website.
CCP's stated aim was to diversify their portfolio and it sought to do that with a console game that tied into something they knew (EVE) and make it a good game in itself. - [yellow]English only please. Zymurgist[/yellow] |
