It was a hilarious read 3 years ago too.
No, it was hilarious at launch. It's just gotten even funnier/sadder since then.

In the beginning it was, though I never saw it. Maybe not in the US or something. I saw a strategy guide for it once though.
It would be nice if it popped up in stores. What they need to do is what WOW does with its 2-week trials, and thats have a box of disks by the registers for like 2 bucks (cost of the disk and short instruction manual). _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Actually 56k is in the system requirements
Aww man... I thought that ment that you had to earn 56k a year before you were allowed to play.
All this time I could have been playing rather than trying to find a better paying job.

Making those boxes doesn't cost really any money. But you would wonder what those filthy shop owners ask for just to have you beautiful and shiny product sitting on their shelfs.
And think of all those (american) carebears that take them boxes back into the shop because they broke their ships by themselves. That would cost you billions!

CCP has eve adverts all over the place. From Google ads, to gaming sites, to social networking sites. If you arent seeing any eve ads, maybe you should try looking at something other then pron.

I'm also a video game retailer and I can say with upmost certainty I could sell this game to just about anyone who plays or is even considering playing an MMO. I would consider it a wise decision for CCP to put the game into retail circulation. Although I do understand the difficulties of that being an independent developer... -----------

Why isn't EVE on the #1 online advertising platform?
Google Adwords CPA campaign, worldwide, $5 USD per trial signup. Very effective, very cheap. Pay for results only.
I have been in contact with Magnus but they're not really interested :(

But this still means the only people who see them are hardcore internet types. One of the big reasons WOW has done so well is theyre good at targeting more casual gamers who dont visit gaming sites on a daily basis. Its a huge market and not everyone is taken with the existing 'mainstream' choices, CCP would be very smart to get a piece of the action. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Edited by: Torquemanda Corteaz on 11/07/2007 05:08:13 I still have my copy of it...
ccp stopped publishing it as nearly everyone and their mother has a connection capable of downloading the full client (its an mmo after all)
Why go spend 20 or 30 quid on a hard copy when you can download it for free?
^^^ one of the reasons WoW is so popular is because its WARCRAFT... by your logic guild wars should be doing just aswell

Just a random FYI:
The reason EvE isnt a retail product in box stores is simple: Its to expensive, because if you dont 1) publish a lineup of games that the stores "want" to carry, and/or 2) commit to a certain level of advertising, big chains just arent interested.
Space = money to a box store, and unless something is either well known (or will be due to expected magazine/webzine articles/reviews)or well advertised (think advertising commitment in the millions if not 10's of millions if you want Best Buy to even sit down and talk with you) they dont see any reason to give it shelf space over something that is better known or advertised.
This is why every design house wants a "publisher". Take Vivendi for instance. Most of Vivendi's game lineup is utter crap, and alot of it isnt well advertised. BUT. Vivendi has WoW. If you are a large chain, you either agree to carry X amount of Vivendi's random crap, or you get less/no WoW. ** Same principle regarding those crappy movie-spinoff games. Movie spinoff games are usually crap, but they are well advertised and promoted, so they get carried (in large quantities) because of the publicity and advertising commitments. Regarding CCP (and other dev houses) and publishers, the publishers usually "control" the whole sales/marketing process. If I recall an interview with Magnus correctly, buying out the publishing rights allowed CCP to set their own advertising agenda, and market the game online via DDL. Thus the Penny Arcade, and other such ads combined with trial DLs and such. In hindsight, it was probably one of the best business decisions ever made by CCP. (Old media companies , especially 5 years ago, were not dealing well with adapting to new digital marketplace.)But basically if your publisher doesnt feel like marketing you, you usually are screwed.
Also, I personally expect a retail version of EvE to be launched soon as well. When the DX10 version comes out, and looks all shiney and new, and grabs alot of attention I expect CCP will respond with a retail box version to sell at full price. The aquisition of White Wolf was probably also partly driven by this, because WW also brought some distrobution channels and expertise with them. They may not be able to get into BigBoxStore by themselves, but can at least get it carried by the wholesalers that typically supply smaller retail operations.
**[Incedentally this is the primary reason Digital D/L distrobution hasnt caught on. Generally speaking (there are a couple exceptions) retailers do NOT want a DDL (digi d/l) version of a game to come out, because it is percieved as hampering retail sales. So not offering a DDL especially at release is often necesarry if you want a chain store to carry your title. This is also why no DDL of WoW at release, because it would have given Vivendi alot less leverage over the retailers overall. Same principle everytime you think "wtf does this game not have a DDL". Its not cause the Devs dont want one, its because the publishers/retailers dont.]

Downloading the game was a big plus to me. Now that I have the game I have no reason for a box. But if it was shown/advertised in stores extensively maybe I wouldn't have discovered the game 3years after it was launched. Boxes in stores would be great for people that don't know about the game yet.
