Hey guys,
Silly question perhaps but which carrier would be the one to go for? I have Amarr BS4, Gallent BS4 and Caldari BS3.
So essentially I am roughly equal in distance (sp wise) from them all except abit more time for Caldari.
I have looked at the specs and they seem almost identical except for one bonus: Gallent gets a drone damage bonus and Amarr + Caldari get a tank bonus.
What do you guys think? ... does it even really matter since they are all so similar?

Go for the minnie one :P
sorry couldn't resist
my only advice is that the nerf bat goes around and around and they want carriers to be front line logistic ships

the best carrier depends on what your doing some small points
training a lvl 3 to lvl 4 is neither hear nor there when you consider its:
100 days ish to fly it 100 days to fit it 60 days to even be able to move it properly without annoying your corp.
there all good all very good but hear come the usual
archon = best tank Chimera = Best tank over short period of time ( struggle with cpu tho) Thantos = most DPS cos of drone bonus Niddy = best friend maker as you remote rep like a no fo.
so yeah there all good but be warned its a long time and a lot of isk before you can fly one but if you make it gratz.
p.s im going for chimeria its prolly not the best but its what i want to fly no way am i spending ages training for a ship i dont like.

Thanks Koko ..,. but what are you refering to when you say 100 days to fit? isen't the capital repper (or shield booster) the only skill that all that I need in addition to the carrier skill? (yes I am new to capitals ... please be kind)
And what do you mean about the 60 days for moving it? ... I assume you are refering to a cyno alt. I dont know if I want to do that since I feel silly paying 15 a month as it is. (yes I love eve and its well worth the isk but paying for two accounts seems silly to me is all)
edit --- bwahaha man I have been playing eve tooooo long. That should be "well worth the money" ... not "well worth the isk". Next thing you know I will ask at the local Harveys how many isk a burger is.

Nidhoggur looks that best, and is the best in fleets.... can't loose I guess if you need e-peen you could go with Thanatos... its a lot uglier but does more damage... Caldari Carrier sucks, luckily they un-nerfed its size, and the Amarr one... well its Amarr... which apparently means it sucks?

You'll need the skills to use Fighters, Capital reps, Capital Remote Reps and Drone Control units.
By 'moving it' he means Jump-drive support skills such as Jump Drive Callibration, which allows you to jump further as your range is pretty low without it. -----

Jump Drive Skills, Repair Skills, Fighters, Racial Carrier, and Advanced Drone Interfacing I think is all you need to FLY it "OK". Maybe you want Cloaking skill to 1 too, seen a lot of people with those on.

BTW if you DON'T train the jump skills don't expect to ever be in a fleet, or actually be going anywhere fast... its kind of a necessary time sink, and you'll have a lot happier cyno pilots.
Thanks BlueS for a great response. I see now what I was missing.
I have the drone skills so I should be ok there. I fly gallent alot so I ran all my drone skills to lvl4 already. Thats including all of the logistics and EW drone skills. I dident go to lvl5 because I feel that time could be better spent on some other things.
Captical Repair I already figured I would need, fighters and drone interfacing as well.
Jump Drive calibration is a new one on me. I will have to take a look at that when I login (at work atm). I hope it isent a high level skill, but if its 60 days to train it to a decent level ... oie ... CCP loves thier time sinks don't they. *grumble*
Capital Emission systems ... dient think of that one. Pretty obvious though now that I see it. I have only seen a Thanatos out in the wild and I got the impression carriers were BBQ mobiles but really they are logistics arent they. Interesting.
I have cloaking ... figured that would be something I would definatly put in a high slot.
Q: Can I use drones as well as Fighters? ... i.e at the same time? I figured I would be able to field one or the other, not both. As such I thought that I would be fielding fighters pretty much exclusively.
On topic: Well by the sounds of things its really a mater of preference. There dosent seem to be a carrier that trumps all the others. Well the Niggy does have quite an uber logistics bonus which would complement its role as a logistics boat very well but other than that they all seem well .... equal relitively speaking. Going on that vain then I guess I will train for the Amarr one. Amarr BS5 would help because I love Amarr battleships. All the lows would allow for a great tank. The mids I could field some good fun EW or something. But .. the Caldari one looks cool ;)
Off topic: I think "Jury Rigging" is the best skill name in the game hehehehe.
Well thanks guys, I am on track I belive except for the Jump Calibration. I dident know that jump drive range was something I had to train up on. Oie.

...... Just had a thought.
Has anyone ever tried a Passively Tanked Chimera? From what I understand NOS'ing a carrier is the best way to take it down (or was that a titan?). Now if you set one up using a similar setup to the passive Drakes out there ... could it not be a very good tanked setup, requiring no cap?
Yes this is off topic in my own thread ... I will chastise myself later.

Calibration is rank9, and Fuel Conservation is rank8... no real reason to train them up to 5 unless you have the time... I don't think its expected that everyone has lvl 5 in a fleet yet.... its just nice to have I guess :). Yes, you can deploy fighters as well as drones at the same time... hopefully they will update the interface to make this easier

All I can say is THANK GOD, luckily even if there was one, it wouldn't have the cpu to fit it anyways.

He means the following: For Fitting: Capital Armor Repper (or Shield repper) (appropriate repper skill to V) Capital Remote Armor Repper (Remote armor repair systems 5) Capital Shield Repper (whatever the remote shield transfer skill is to V) Fighters (requires leadership V, drone interfacing V) Triage module (requires logistics IV, which in turn requires long range targeting and a few other things to V)
For Moving: Jump Drive Operation V (Required for jump drive calibration) Jump Drive Calibration to at least IV (extends jump range... means less cynos) Jump Fuel Conservation to III or IV (reduces the amount of isotopes you need when you jump)
Oh and dont forget 40 days or so to get from BS 4 to BS 5.

Actually it requires Logistics V now.... and it seems kinda crappy.... It allows you to repair others more, increases your own repair amount, your max locked targets, and massively boosts lock speed. However... you loose your speed tank(great against dreads), all your damage/drones control, it requires strontium, you can't be remote repaired, and your stuck for 10 minutes... All in all it hardly seems worth the time investment.

Caldari are the worst carriers, because midslots are really important, and armour tanking is just generally more useful in a fleet.
Go for Archon if you want to frontline, or Thanatos if you want to POS hug.
Niddy is good if you like to repair stuff, and since triage became rather sweet.

I disagree, but your millage will defiantly vary. If you've setup your Chimera properly, though it will be just as competitive. Not sure what you use your midslots for on a carrier though... not much EW to be had for it. But here's my guesstimations: [these numbers are estimates]
An Archon gets:
9600 armor hp / 30 s [base] -> modified becomes 9600 armor hp / 22.5s [for a cap use of 2400 cap @lvl4]
= 426.66 hp /s = 106.66 cap / s
While a Chimera gets:
6400 shield hp / 10s [base] -> modified becomes 6400 shield hp / 10s [for a cap use of 2031 cap @lvl4]
= 640 hp/s = 203.1 cap/s
the end results [obviously] is that you have to fit two cap armor reps. Big deal, I suppose, but it needs an extra slot to do it. That could be used somewhere else, so factor that into your equations.
The cap requirements for both are about the same, and the dual-armor rep will defiantly field you more pure armor points every second. The Chimera will also have the native shield recharging factor thrown in [which I didn't bother with] and there's the amount of cap the hardeners will take too... but by no means is the "Chimera a short-term engagement" ship, if you've got your archon setup to dual-rep all the time, than it requires just [about] as much cap to run. You just don't have the ability to turn off half your tank as you feel like it.
The CPU issues... that's another story all together. If you're fielding fighters [and don't have Adv. Interfacing 4] you shouldn't have too many CPU issues.
As I said though, YMMV.

I hate to flame, but alot of you seem to lack general info about the chimera. It is by far not the worst carrier.
It can tank more dps than any other carrier, and the only limiting factor is its CPU. As for mid slots, yes, but theyre not as vital as many believe.
Nid is currently the worst imo, as the repping bonus (despite being changeD) still isnt the most useful.....

As the best asset of a capital is not so much the burst tank (i.e. repair/regen rate) but rather the total/initial hitpoints buffer, passive shield tanks are not that hot, especially since you need to sacrifice cap recharge and even resists to get a half-decent recharge rate out of those monsters. At best you're going to get a 1500 DPS omnitank, which is trivially obtained (and usually surpassed without much effort even under moderate NOSage) with active-tanking.

Just as an aside, I was curious and dabbled in the darkside in quickfit for the chimera...
450ish shield hp/s at max recharge with a passive tank. Resists won't be that great though--it takes most of your slots to get this. And your cap recharge is crap (obviously).
So its certainly possible to fit a monster capfree tank...no way in hell I'd want to do it with a billion isk ship. ----------------------------------------------- Adm Vladimir Tinakin CFO Hadean Drive Yards |

I get confused when people talk about the Chimera and they dont know what there talking about it is by far one of the most versatile Carriers for these reasons.
1) you can go for monster tank, its not perma but by god it can tank a crap load in a short period of time.
2) Perma Tank 1 by using Cap flux coils you an get a massive perma tank and an amazing recharge rate, not useful if your there just to remote rep but still very good.
3 Perma tank 2 by using Shield Power Relays, yeah this cuts your boost amount down but just wack on anotherboost amplifier and your there.
All these setups are good and useful just you have to prepare before hand.
However lets face it when your in a gang your never gonna be first primary called are you, if you keep your fleet alive your gonna win if you dont then you wil lose. Also in Massive cap fleet battle when all the dreads are targeting you its gonna be game over wheter or not you can pera run it no one carrier can tank 4+ dreds.
My summary is a carrier is a carrier is a carrier they all do there job very well and there all as good as each other but if i had to chose 1 downside to the chimera is that most ppl pvp with an armour tank so having a natural bonus to repping someones armour is useful but if your flying with caldari then people will quickly become your best friend.
neway my chim fit if people wanna critique.
3xDrone control uni 1x Dread Guristas Smart bomb 1x Cap Sheield Tranfer
2x Dread guristas invul Field 1x Photon Hardener tech 2 1x Cap Shield Booster 1x Dread Guristas Shield boost Amp 1x Shadow serpentis Sensor Booster 1x Cap Recharger II
3x Cap Flux Coils 1x Damage control Unit
All in all it has all good resists and can pera run the booster and take 5 Heavy NOS at least to make it slow down iirc the cap recharge is like 520 so its easy to move and jump around
Hope any of this helps the OP and yeah everyone always argues which is the best but just fly what race you like to fly when your flying capitals

Gotta concur with the above...only way I can see being able to do a large smartie, 3x DCU and 1x Cap Shield Xfer, and an amplified cap shield booster is with a coproc in the lows--which really sucks, btw.

Heres where your making your mistake. The other carriers then use their mid slots for cap recharge modules and whoila they can perma rep. This is why the caldari carrier's tank is 'short term' It cannot perma rep.

Would anyone clue me in as to why smartbombs are in most carrier fittings?

1. Faction Large Smartbombs tear through drones, frigates, and intys rather quickly. 2. A lot of Carriers use a EMP and Therm combo, usually a Dark Blood or True Sansha Large EMP and a Shadow Serpentis Large Therm, thus stripping you of the shields and a majority of the aforemention ships armor. 2 - 3 cycles kills and inty with burst damage, and 1 - 2 cycles for drones.

First off: crystal implants don't affect capital shield boosters, so they're out as a tanking option...better to use slave or something to get more armor to chew through.
Second: Smartbombs are useful for capital ships since they take forever and a day to lock anything smaller than a BC--and thats with a sensor booster. Basically, if you're getting pummelled by a bunch of fighters or drones or frigates, faction/officer smarties let you reach out and pop someone easily without locking.
EMP smarties have the best range. Thermal comes close though, but a faction EMP smartbomb goes out to 7500 meters. Against a fighter or drone attack, they're brutal and enough to make anyone keep their 17M babies in. You just have to be careful to either keep your fighters in or busy outside the smartie's range to avoid popping your own. Goons recently used a few smartbomb battleships to nuke about a billion isk in fighters, for an example of their effectiveness.
