A hypothetical question. Is it possible to use sentry drones to hit a target 200km away?
I'm thinking of Wardens, with Sensor boosters, Omnidirectional tracking links, and theDrone Scope Chip rig(ship's drone optimal range).
Can any of you experts tell me if its possible?

Look at the new Sentry II's (though you need to train to level V) the Warden II has a great optimal + falloff and would make it much easier to achieve

50km * 1.25 * (1.2^8) = 268km - optimal shouldnt be an issue
each drone link adds 20km from the base of 60(with skills)km. 55km from rigs. 6 highslots (scorp in this example) gives another 120. Totalling 235km range, and in theory you only need half the range the sentries will be firing.

You'll have more problems getting your drone control range high enough.

Actually the problem isn't the control range, it's the optimal/fall-off of the sentry drone.. The fall-off isn't influenced by anything sadly, so it's just optimal.
You'll need loads of med and high slots to get there, even with 6 omnidirectional drone mods you'll be at about 180km (without stacking penalties) optimal without skills on a warden, so it is possible, but you'll need sensor boosters to target that range yourself .. very few ships have such a nice slot layout..
All the stuff above does not necessarily reflect my corp, my alliance or even me.. Drone guide.. |

But fortunately, it happens to have a hefty drone damage bonus. -- Guile can always trump hardware -- |

Myrmidon?
I wish T2 sentries had better tracking... How well do those things hit various targets from 200+km away? I have not had much of a chance to use sentries.

Edited by: Shiken Kan on 14/07/2007 01:30:31 actually the problem is the combination of everything and unless you want to use a rokh or a similiar ship (in which case using drones for sniping would be rather stupid) for this you'll lack the slots to get there with a reasonable amount of money. for a dominix you'd need
hi: 6x drone link augmentor 1
mids: 3x omnidirectional tracking link 2x sensor booster 2
low: what you like
rigs: 1x drone control range augmentor 2 2x drone scope 2
drones: warden 2
you'd still need maxed skills in ew drones to give an attack order at 200km, you need at least long range targeting 4 to acquire a lock at the same range and you'd need drone sharpshooting 5 to get an optimal at 186km so your 200km are well within the 30 km falloff. note that a myrmidon would not be able to target this far with the same setup. imho you're way better off with sniping from a more moderate distance like 140 or so kilometers. then you can use the sentry damage rigs and the ship overall will be much cheaper.
oh and as to their to hit chance: that one is actually pretty good, as long as the target is in optimal range +/- falloff and is actually the better the lower the angular velocity of the target is, hence hitting at 200km should be pretty easy.

Sorry to ask, but you guys really are the experts :)

Wouldnt it be easier just telling us what ship it is and what you want to use it for?

Im pretty sure you dont need drone control range, since it is sentry drones and they are right beside you :P ---------------------------------------------

You need that range to order them attack out there. If target is not in your drone control range then your drones beside you will not shoot it.

And you might want to plant them outside of sentry range, and be near the gate yourself to web and scram. I'm pretty sure theres a reason for most things. ;)

Yes, sorry... I was thinking of the Archon carrier. (I know it can use fighters, but I wanted to explore the direct damage of aspect).

erm i can't fly carriers myself, but iirc the bonus ships are solely fighters and as you don't get a damage bonus on normal drones you'd need to fit at least 3 drone control units to have a better damage output then the dominix or the myrmidon, ships that cost mebbe 8% or so of yours. then you'd have the problem that withiut rigs you would have a maximum control range of 100km, tho ofc you could fit a far better tank and had some fighters as addition to your sentries. but all in all i'd say that it's not the best idea to fit and especially rig such a ship for using sentries. especially as this would pretty much gimp your supporting ability.
