Originally by: Micheal Dietrich My first vehicle was a '84 Bronco 2 EB edition with throttle body and that vehicle will always keep me away from Ford.
First off it had a 2.6 liter V6 with automatic and comparing that to the vehicles weight this thing was a gutless wonder.
Who ever designed it put the horn on the turn signal instead of the steering wheel like ALL the other cars.
The cup holders were specifically designed to hold NOTHING.
During the 2 years that I owned it:
1. I went through 5 batteries. 2. Starter simply fell off while driving it 3. Tranny went out. 4. Throttle body was replaced 5. Engine threw a rod (some 50 ft) 6. Muffler rusted out 7. U-joints broke 8. Passenger side strut blew up. 9. alignment went to hell and back.
I finally got tired of it and got my 94 Nissan XE Kingcab 4x4 which I have been driving for about a decade now. 3.0 Liter with a stick shift. Up to 128k miles (bought it with 64k) and still running strong. No engine work other than oil/air filter changes. Body work though but that because of operator error.
And mind you my vehicles take a beating with the work I do all the time.
I also just recently bought a '01 jeep with 62k miles on it. Very nice vehicle for a playtoy. Theres nothing funner than taking the top down and the doors off and go cruise through the back roads or even around downtown.

Seriously, just look at their revenue vs profit on the Fortune 500. How can a company possibly lose that much money? Even GM isn't that embarrassing.
Is there going to be an American car industry 10-20 years from now?

Edited by: Darteis Elosia on 17/07/2007 13:50:21 Well for my first car i would try getting something light. But given my personality it would have to be rather speedy.. We seem to agree on the speed part :)
My dream first car would be a BMW 325i, e30, 1988 with the M-styling pack. But it's a bit expensive perhaps. But you get a solid car that handles good and has alot of power and RWD. Looks very good too, especially if you maintain it and put a M-styling pack on. Don't know what that would cost though.
Otherwise i'd get an old golf or so. They should be far cheaper to maintain than an thirsty V8. A Saab 900 might be a cool car 'cuase of it's turbo. But prices for a used Saab 900 is probably alot higher in the US than in sweden.. Personally i like the old Saab 900 not the new f-ing opel they put out.
I really don't like the looks of the Crown Vic, it doesnt look bad, just really boring and plain. Even an old gold would look better in my opinion.:)

Saabs are really expensive to maintain on this side of the pond. Even VWs are going to be a lot.
Also, over here they changed the spelling of 'opel' to 'saturn'. They still suck just as bad, though.

I don't think Fiat sells anything in the US, which is a shame. I'd consider buying a Panda if they did.

Alright, Bronco 2's suck (especially compared to it's chevy counterpart). One of my friends had a 84 Ranger and his truck also threw a rod when he was just trying to start it up one morning. He bought a second one and the wiring fried within 3 months. We also picked up a 51 willy's jeep that had a ford straight six installed and the single barrell carb died. After repairing that the gasline busted right at the carb. After repairing that the crankshaft snapped. Another friend has a '77 mercury station wagon (owned by Ford) which lasted quite a long time until the tranny was replaced and the radiator hosed a car down that was 30ft in front of us. The only Ford that I've seen work is his dad's '77 Ranger but it's only because it's owned by a mechanic and I'll admit that thing is a beast of a truck.
I'm personally am a nissan/toyota man because I see alot more quality put into each vehicle. If I had to absolutly choose an american made vehicle I would go with dodge. My father has a 94' V10 that he's owned about as long as I've had my truck and that thing is a workhorse and a half. Theres nothing funnier than hauling a CAT up a 20 grade hill and outrunning most traffic. That and having a massive grill gaurd up front and a license plate that says 'move over'
And the only time I see rice burners on the side of the road is when I put em there Won't harm mustangs from the 60-70's or '06 and up(all the other years were either crap or just fugly.)

Chryslers have the problem that they put basically the same transmission in everything, and that transmission sucks.
GM can still make really good engines (see the Ecotec lineup), though they need to stop selling badge-engineered Opels as Saturns and Vauxhalls. Other than that, I don't think the American car industry has much hope in it.

They do. If your local community college offers a defensive driving course, take it! It will lower your insurance price.
Downside though. You can use the class to generally get out of a speeding ticket, anything under 15 MPH (anything over, and you need DA permission to take it). You can only take the class once every 3 years.
But there are many other ways to get out of tickets, as long as you have deep pockets.
IMO, the Crown Vic is bad ass. Look for a retired police version! Granted its probably been run to hell and back (State cars generally are) but it was made to do so, and will continue to do so well for a long time!
EDIT..
To the guy with the Ford Taurus SHO as his first car, lucky bastard!
To the guy with the crapped out bronco 2. You just got unlucky. I had a few friends buy a bronco 2 for 200 bucks, and beat the crap out of it. They drove it into trees, off hills, on ATV trails. It finally died when they crashed into a Fire Hydrant at 50 MPH.

And that's the cheapest and fastest way to disqualify her from being a potential mate. I like to think of it as a gold digger radar.
My car is no banger. It will pretty much slaughter the average kids first car and even some new and even expensive cars, it does look a little old though and the body isnt exactly perfect. It even has the 4/60 AC system. (4 windows down/60 mph)
But thats what makes it that much more fun, beating the idiot with the 5 foot spoiler and fart cannon exhaust with a OLD BEAT UP TAURUS.
As long as I don't do dates at mid noon though I should be okay

Edited by: Feyona on 18/07/2007 07:25:36 Edited by: Feyona on 18/07/2007 07:25:05 You wanna talk fugly? The Crown Vic's a beauty queen in comparison to my car. Try a brown 1997 Ford Escort sedan (the US version, not the neato ones you Euros have) that needs serious body work. After being hit enough and making enough mistakes, I just don't care about the little bits and pieces hanging off anymore. :) Long as all the essentials work. (Five speed manual, check, four banger, check, roll-up windows, check! Loud, possibly ticket-warranting stereo? CHECK! ) The crappier looking it gets, the more fun it is to drive, 'cause you won't care about someone putting a ding on your baby. Or if you accidentally back into a pole.
We also had a 1988 Grand Marquis for a while, same thing as the V8 Crown Vic. We put a trailer hitch on it and hauled our fishing boat and various other things that it wasn't meant to do, and it lasted until about 175,000 miles when the mechanic said the timing chain was going to break and it'd cost more than the car is worth to have it fixed. My mom sold it to a friend and he is still driving it. (Well, what hasn't rusted off of it.)
And anyway, most girls don't care about how nice looking your car is, I figure... they'd care a lot more if you spent that money and time on them than on your ride. At least, just about every single one I've met.
