Edited by: Frank Horrigan on 15/07/2007 20:07:45 Hello eve citizens, I am about to embark on the journey of buying my first car.
*Pic* (not the same one)
Pros. V8 Style, I'll be the flyest white boy around. Cheap to purchase, 2,000.
Cons. V8 (gas) Repair costs Not cheap to maintain really.
My uncle has illustrated the cons and didn't really have any pros to add, said I would probably wreck the thing within six months becuase I have no experence.. But I belive I can handle it, I just have to drive it for a bit, I'm a very, very good driver. So, I was wondering what my eve peers opinions are? I'm 18 and will be going to my college form in about a month if that helps.

With a V8, you'll be putting plenty of money into it indeed, without making it look any better.

I know nothing about that particular car, but would I be right in thinking it is no slouch, with a fair bit of power to it? Rear wheel drive as well?
If so, it might be a good idea to get some advanced driving tuition. The UK has things like the Advanced Drivers schemes, which teach you about hazard awareness, controlling skids, avoiding road rage, stuff like that. If you can find something similar, it might help, and maybe also reduce insurance costs.
The first car I owned was an old Rover SD1 Vitesse. So, I know a bit about big rear wheel drive cars with lots of power behind them, and getting advanced tuition was the best thing I did, because the insurance was halved, and knowing how to handle the car in skids and slides made driving less scary and more fun.

Yes it is rear wheel drive, and I'll look into the driving lessons.. however I highly doubt my insurance will even care, the joy of being 18 and male in america..

The 'Vic is a pretty solid car, used in most police departments across the US. There's a couple problems in a) The gas mileage, and b) the mileage in general. Getting a car pushing 15 years old probably isn't the best idea, and a ford engine kinda starts to fall apart around 175-200k miles. You may end up dumping a lot more money in the car just to keep it running than you'd like. Personally, I hate it because its a victim of the automobile homogenization conspiracy to make all cars as visually unappealing as possible, but I understand that money can stand in the way of a sexy car. I'd look up a couple years to 97-99 and see if you can't find something that has less than 100k miles on it

It's yer first car, first cars aren't meant to be looking good. Unless you've recently been adopted by Madonna.
I find 2000 dollars abit steep for a 14Yo-car, on gas, V8.
My first car: Ford Escort-Ghia, 22yo, 75000km, 100 euro's I even drove it from Belgium to Scotland and around it 1300kms without a problem.
2nd car: 0 euro's, Opel (Vauxhall) Vectra 1.6i, 14Yo, 115000kms, I'm taking her on a 6000kms trip up north to Sweden next week... wish me luck.

in the us. the > the engine the > its value. 2k is a reasonable price for that car but you're going to have problems with it.
other cars in your price range worth looking into:
mid 90's t-bird turbo early 90's rx7 early 90's honda 70's-early 80's 280/260z (dirt cheap, easy to maintain, and very fast)

Its ugly, but its your first car, and they're not about looks. If it's got some muscle, and it's in good shape, AND is a good price, get it. And that at least has some muscle.
Anyhow, still looks better than what I drive. A 15 year old Peugeot 309; looks fugly, and is an underpowered French car to boot
If I was buying, I'd probably go for a Honda or a Toyota right now, personally. One of the new Civics would be great- not least because the factory that makes them is 10 minutes from my house. Supporting the local economy ftw! \o/ --------

Edited by: voogru on 16/07/2007 01:41:02 You DO NOT want a nice first car.
It does not matter what the car looks like, the chance of you crashing it is so high that it's very stupid IMO to buy a nice or a brand new car.
Buy a piece of of junk (like a 1993 crown vic... ), drive it for a few years, then get something nicer.
My first car and current car is a 1993 Taurus SHO. 220HP yamaha engine, looks like grandma's grocery getter until you zip pass a riced up honda that doesnt have a chance, I even spanked a brand new 300HP benz once (well... only cause he weighed another 1000 pounds)
Needless to say, his girlfriend was giving him funny looks when I looked in my rear view mirror when I had to stop and he was right on my tail, he was unable to pass me on a 1 mile strech. He was catching up but there was not enough room to pass, and I got a headstart cause I was much lighter.
Getting beat by a 4 door family sedan is about as bad as getting beat by a minivan, if I ever have more money than brains I'm gonna get a minivan and stick a 400hp V8 in it and go make people look bad.

I used to own that car. In highway patrol gray.
A Crown Vic is a good safe car, relatively inexpensive, and it's got a bit of muscle to it. My only advice, in the addition to what's above: don't spend a dime on it. You're going to destroy it eventually, so anything after-market you put on it, you'll be taking back off. Just save your money so your next car is that much nicer. Besides, you'll need every dollar to keep that thing in working order. There's a reason that the Highway Patrol is really the only law enforcement body that still uses Crown Vics: they require constant maintenance.
Oh, and because of disgusting curb weight, RWD, and tendency for Fords to lose alignment faster than Paris loses her panties, it eats tires in short order. Expect to replace tires regularly, and religiously get alignments, wheel balancing, and tire rotations. If at all possible, find a tire dealer who includes balance and rotation with the price of tires. You'll also not want to skimp on brakes, as stopping that monster is a top priority.

American police departments use the Crown Vic basically because Crysler and GM do an even worse job, and it'd be unpatriotic to use a foreign manufacturer (or something).
That said, there's no sense being picky about your first car. It's highly likely to get in an accident unless you have a lot of driving experience before getting your license (my uncle had no problems acing his driving test, since he drove the tractor on the family farm for years before that).

Edited by: Antiochus Laetus on 16/07/2007 07:24:50 Crown Vic is a good car, I think it looks good (atleast the one in the pic - dunno about yours) Every one I pass by always makes me pause, so I can check it out make sure its not police. If its a 'solid' car, body-good, engine-good, no major problems. Then you should be fine. Just lay off the gas.
Anyway if you all think that car is fugly go ahead and check out mine: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/821099
Not all folks wreck thier first cars, I know I didnt. I've had my car for about 4.5 yrs I've spent a lot on it, in the first/second years it was to keep it running, now everything I do is for fun, any sports part that can fit I fit it. New engine and all.
And yes, my mechanic thinks I'm insane oh...its also nearly 22yrs old New sig coming. |

Edited by: DarkMatter on 16/07/2007 15:06:02 Ok, first cars.
Well, you need something that's affordible. (Not just the price you buy it for, but also maintenence)
My first car ever was actually a truck, a 1978 Ford F-250.
I had to replace the straight 6 300 cu-in engine with a V8 351/400M engine, because I was young and a V8 was manditory.
I painted that truck up and sold it to help pay for college tuition.
While I was in college, I took what I could get. I had a lot of crappy cars, and some of them were free hand-me-downs.
I would suggest you not worry so much about looks on your first ride...
I would also suggest to go with a GM car vs a Ford or Chysler. Older GM's are less costly to maintain. Ford & Chrysler develop a lot of weird breakdowns when they get older, costly breakdowns as well...
I'd actually suggest a GM pickup. Older front wheel drive cars are trouble if you ask me...
I'm not into Jap cars, so not sure which of them would be the best to get... I know that you youngins don't have much to play with these days, most cars look like crap... So you end up whiggin out your rice burners...

My first vehicle was a '84 Bronco 2 EB edition with throttle body and that vehicle will always keep me away from Ford.
First off it had a 2.6 liter V6 with automatic and comparing that to the vehicles weight this thing was a gutless wonder.
Who ever designed it put the horn on the turn signal instead of the steering wheel like ALL the other cars.
The cup holders were specifically designed to hold NOTHING.
During the 2 years that I owned it:
1. I went through 5 batteries. 2. Starter simply fell off while driving it 3. Tranny went out. 4. Throttle body was replaced 5. Engine threw a rod (some 50 ft) 6. Muffler rusted out 7. U-joints broke 8. Passenger side strut blew up. 9. alignment went to hell and back.
I finally got tired of it and got my 94 Nissan XE Kingcab 4x4 which I have been driving for about a decade now. 3.0 Liter with a stick shift. Up to 128k miles (bought it with 64k) and still running strong. No engine work other than oil/air filter changes. Body work though but that because of operator error.
And mind you my vehicles take a beating with the work I do all the time.
I also just recently bought a '01 jeep with 62k miles on it. Very nice vehicle for a playtoy. Theres nothing funner than taking the top down and the doors off and go cruise through the back roads or even around downtown.

Image? Rep? baah!
The fact that I drive a some-would-say crummy Audi 80 '87 only means that there are more important things in my life than street rep. People sometimes ask if I don't want a nicer car, but I always answer "no, not really". It works just fine, so why bother? Granted, it currently needs a bit of work as there's a nasty little rust hole developing in the front right door, but I see that as an excellent excuse to learn how to weld.
Figured I'd keep the car for a year when I bought it. It's been a bit over a year now and I really really don't want to part with it yet. And I'll shed a tear the day I do.
Get yourself a cheap car in decent condition and don't think too much about what other people say (tell them you care more about your life than your car). Then you have plenty of time to figure out what's really important in a car to you. If people can't respect you for that then, quite frankly, they're idiots.
