After the last few weeks of rather controversial subject matter, I'm pleased to announce that the pendulum has swung the other way. This week's story concerns three women who are sitting in a room and drinking tea. Its companion, published in two weeks' time, will have blood and strangeness.
As an aside, this story gave me far greater pleasure to write than it had any right to. Not only did the dialogue flow well and the characters distinguish themselves, but it touched on several little things that I want to explore more in the future, including the dark currents of cruelty and madness that may run in otherwise perfectly reasonable and pleasant people, and the justifications one will dredge up so that one may sell oneself to a blatantly evil cause and still sleep at night. These issues will crop up again in the upcoming Black Mountain chronicles.
Oh, and the women are called the Furies, though never to their face.

I have just recently started playing Eve and I find myself spending just as much time reading the back story as playing the game. ItĘs far too common nowadays for online games to be lacking in any substance and plot and I find that the chronicles and short stories contribute to the game in an immense way. Thanks, to everyone that spends time writing them.

II apologize for what I am about to say, but feel that it must be said.
I know this statement will be controversial before I even utter it, but nonetheless I donĘt think this was one of your better works. The reason being is that the story feels unfinished. Personally, I have never been a big fan of stories with loose endings. They end up being merely chapters in a volume rather than stories themselves. Some of your previous chrons were much better in regards to this such as "Terms" and "Most Ancient" I believe it was called. While they can still be viewed as merely chapters, the chapters themselves were enough to stand alone.
Further, I must also agree with a previous BoB posting in the "Terms" thread. While your writing is wonderful I fear that it doesnĘt actually add much content to the Eve back-story. In actuality you are merely picking details that belong to Eve (such as the existence of pirate corps) without advancing, or adding to the game fiction itself. In a sense, its fiction for the purpose of fiction. This in itself is fine, however, I feel that it detracts from the true purpose that the Chrons are supposed to fill. Great examples of advancing Eve lore are the methods of torture series you did.
One could argue perhaps that I might be missing some of the deeper meanings held by this story, such as these woman are the true power behind the Serps, but in the end I feel that more needs to be done to bring about the "essence" of Eve as I like to call it.

Very nice. Stories of this nature go a long way towards establishing the ways in which instellar travel has affected society, while also making the point that technology ultimately changes nothing about human nature. Good stuff.

Perhaps because it is merely a chapter in a volume? At least thats what I take from it when Abraxas refers to its companion story coming in 2 weeks.

I do agree with Riley that the Chronicles don't seem to reveal lots of background details about the EVE universe. There is certainly a missing element of grand history, and all that goes with it.
What I don't agree with is the assertion Chronicles are not adding to the vitality of EVE. I think that these smaller more personal stories give a much needed sense of the EVE universe being slightly worn and threadbare in patches where capsuleers and the common folk interact.
I like it. It's like understanding WWI from a history book vs. a soldier's letters from the front.

Very, very good stuff. The inclusion of the sibyls in the Serpentis tapestry adds the often-overlooked highly "superstitious" side of Sicilian culture to the Serpentis.
I would dispute the stance that these Chronicles don't add much to the Eve backstory - well, maybe not the backstory, but they certainly add potential for where the story is going in future. We could see Aurora events concerned with the Three's maneuvers for power within the Serpentis. I still think "Sand Giants" was one of the best for this fleshing out, implying the doubts Parliamentarians have about the choices the Republic makes to buy its freedoms.
The story of Eve is in its details, in my humble opinion. And those details change all the time.

Perhaps, like everything else concerning my opinions it might just be a case of really high standards. When I think of stories related to games I think of Homeworld. (I say this mainly because of the similarities of Eve and homeworld being set in space etc)
I can remember reading the back story of the Higarian people and soley wanting to play the game JUST to help them complete the story and see it through to its conclusion.
While I do think that Eve has a wonderful back story I just dont see it as well made as the Homeworld one. The main reason for this I think is that the Chrons get "lost" in the details. Details are great, dont get me wrong, but at this point I see a vast majority of the work soley about the details and none of them "meshing" together. I guess what I am trying to say is that I want to see more of the overall big picture and the grand scheme of things. Its like having a bag of marbles and dumping them and watching them scatter everywhere. Individually they look nice, but you have no idea what really connects them.

Very nice. Though regarding the capsuleer, I was almost expecting them to throw the woman out (possibly in multiple pieces), since her husband is about to die. But they think they can take on a capsuleer...
When will they ever learn?

I just read the story, and I really like it - it's great. But one thing remained I haven’t understood, problem is that I know English quite well to communicate with another people but sometimes it’s difficult for me to understand some little details in eve chronicles, so what did Scyldie mean when she says "By the way, how did she die, again?" is it have any connections with matter why she came to those women in fall and get out at winter?

Some of you have stated that you think the backstories dont "add to eve" but i tend to think the oppoiste.
the fact that its not all about technology and the unyealding war of capselors does add to the universe. what some of us seem to forget is that our life as a capselor is a very rare one indeed.
think about this. who runs the stations? who maintains your ships when your away? are you the only living thing on your ship? are there still capsle less ships?
the answer to these questions seems to elude you. just because we capselors are "the best of the best" does not mean that a well trained crew w/o our advantage cant take us down.
always remember even a thousand drones can kill a dread :)
oh and to the devs keep up the awsome stories i love every one of em :)

I liked the way the story flowed. Scyldie seems to be viciously confident, relying on hunches and foresight, I especially liked the ending, as it fell into place, the Furies being surprised/proven wrong at least twice, once about Scyldie's husband, and once more, as the snow began to fall; my favorite aspect of this story, however, is that there is every possibility of me, or another reader being the very capsuleer that may end up killing, or being defeated by Scyldie's husband - thus ensuring her failure or success.
While I'm all for well-thought out plans and rooting for the underdog, I suppose, inevitably, its her neck on the chopping block. We pod-pilots aren't inclined to lose, and are less-inclined to let a defeat go unanswered, being damn-near immortal has its perks, I suppose.

She's alluding to the possibility that the Furies had her killed. Their response basically confirms her suspicions.

I'd like to remind everyone that, suicidal as the pirates may be in engaging you people every day, they'd be unlikely to plan a direct attack unless they thought they stood a fighting chance. Whatever the outcome, though, Scyldie's husband and his people certainly won't get out of the conflict entirely unscathed. And yes, as I said at the start, this story was half of a larger tale, so naturally it will feel open-ended. Wait another week and we'll see what happens to Scyldie's husband.

Precisely. I love hiding things like this in my stories. Not every chronicle has hidden meanings, but I think they contain a lot more than many readers realize, which is exactly how it should be. "In the Electric Museum" is partly a retelling of the Biblical legend of David (of vs. Goliath fame) and Jonathan; "The Speaker of Truths" has its own little echoes in history; "Postnatal" is an extended metaphor of birth, complete with references to foetal development; and so on.

It is absolutely fiction for fiction's sake. You'll note that nowhere on our pages is the chronicles' "true purpose" stated, nor is there any consensus among the players themselves (except, to my great delight, "more stories"). Yes, before my time they used to be infodumps, sometimes giving you back story, sometimes not. Now they're narratives, with all that entails, and sometimes give you back story. I wish I could find the initial "hire me plz" brief I sent to to CCP, since it included a phrase which really says all that one needs to know about my approach to writing the chronicles. Paraphrasing, it goes something like, "I've less interest in writing about the capsuleer than about the janitor who mops up the ectoplasm dripping from his pod."

I love that aspect as well. We made a big deal out of the Speaker of Truths when he went off to have a little talk with Aritcio Kor-Azor, and had players both protecting and attacking him.

An EVE book is in the works, though I'm not its writer. However, you can expect a far longer piece of fiction from me in the near future. I'm working on a long, long series of chronicles that follow one overarcing story and will be published sequentially over the course of many months. If all goes well, the series will start in late August. It's called "Black Mountain."
