When making characters, do you guys prefer to just have a first name, like "John" or is it more official and professional to have a first name and last name, like "John Doe?"
Which way of naming your character is more accepted and is more "correct" when it comes to naming a character?
Do you understand what I'm trying to get at?

Whatever you do, little piece of advice: Have a name that starts with a letter near the middle of the alphabet. In PvP, especially in big fights, targets will be called alphabetically, so the closer your name is to "A", the faster you die. Sometimes, they call Z to A, hence why a letter in the middle of the alphabet.

First of all anglo-saxon names blow.
Second, read the fiction and check out the names of NPC ingame and let them inspire you. First and last names is ideal to get the true immersive feeling, yes of course it's my opinion, I'm the one expressing it. But if you're going to go with Daqko Darklord then by all means don't! Also you'd find that titles and rank hardcoded into the character name limits the span with which you can play around. Emperor Sgt. Random just ain't playing out.

For me, what you see under my Face there <--- isn't my character's name, it's his "callsign" or Nickname sort of, no way would my Character give out his real name to everyone. So go chew on that all you that hate numbers in names, my Character has a Full name but it's not public knowledge.

NOW you're telling me... :P
But you are right, in fleet battles focus fire goes alphabetically. First ship type, then name. So fly a Destroyer and name yourself Marcellus Mayham to be on the safe side.
I'm not into immersive roleplaying stuff so I just took my nick which I have been using forever. My alt has the name of a local p0rn queen because all the other obvious names were already taken. :) At the time I was aiming for that extra second while attackers were pondering if they should shoot or not. Now I know that either Eve players don't care or are all g@y. But, who cares, it's my hauling alt anyway.

generally they dont do that much anymore.... they mostly get intel on what they ahve to fight agent and spend a few mins to pick out targets depending on what they are fighting so generally fly a cmd ship or ceptor cause they dont get called unless most of the support/battleships are dead
also if they know what they are fighting they will go for the people they know will be easy to take down first.

That's why Aaron is a very poor first name choice
I think using a first and last name is better for RP , but that's about it. A single nickname easily carries more meaning , it's better if you don't want to be separated from your in-game character.

I chose my name as a noob (obviously) before I knew there was a ship type called Manticore. It is an unfortunate coincidence for me, and I have been asked multiple times if I am a ôbomberö. However, in hindsight I would probably still choose the same name, because I use some variation of Manticore in all my internet identities. Plus, I like my name!

That's a myth. Believe me, it only ever happens if the person calling primaries is a n00b. Done correctly/sensibly, it's logistics> EW> Fleet Commander> biggest threat> next biggest threat> next biggest threat> etc. with secondary and tertiary targets on standby.
I'm yet to meet one competent FC who calls alphabetically... if that was how it was done, there'd be no need for target calling at all, just have everyone set their overview to alphabetical mode and yell "Open fire!".
As far as names are concerned, I consider "Stitcher" to be my character's call sign. What's his actual name, you ask?
That would be telling...
BTW, if you do want to avoid being called primary, the thing to do is make your name impossible to pronounce. ***

Well erm uhmm... well... you should definitely try something with lots of death and dark and kill, also something that suggests awesomeness on your part, like adding lots of zorz at the end of the name, with syllables that sound like guns going off and things blowing up, you know, just to scare the opposition away.
Also rolling your head around on the keyboard works, gives the impression you're an isk farmer, you know, have people come at you thinking you're some ******* with no clue how to defend yourself and you lie there in wait and shoot them unsuspecting wannabe evildoers to smithereens.

Edited by: SengH on 20/07/2007 22:30:43 From experience you want something really unpronounceable( vowels are bad) with lots of numbers with a long string of easy to confuse digits that way you have something like. nqjkp00000001919 and you vary the # of 0's for all your alts but keep the numbers the same. Get your friends to name their characters similar keep the letters and non zero digits the same. Have fun watching your enemies trying to call targets. Would be extremely funny to see an entire alliance named that way. Ofc you'd get ppl thinking your a macro, but id rather get called a macro than get called primary.

In all MMOs I tend to treat names very seriously. In EVE, when I realized I could have a first AND a last name at the character creation window, the game immediately endeared itself to me. When I go into a new system and in local I see someone with a first and last name I always check their profile/bio if they have one. It's usually a sign of an RPer and those bios are always a little more entertaining than the usual helpful game info or "My gun just did this much damage to a guy! Check it out!"
I personally dislike numbres in names. The person who said it was a callsign made them make a little more sense to me, but I still dislike them.
Look on the bright side, at least the naming convention of Xbox Live isn't implemented here. Having to fly spaceships with people like "Bonertron69" or "el1tesmok3r420" while listening to how much they hate (insert racial slur here) or how high they are would probably make me quit the game in disgust.
And people wonder why I never play games on Live.

First of all, Im sorry to say the perfect name for the perfect character is Del Narveux, and its already taken. Secondly, I dont think theres too many hardcore snotty roleplayer types who are going to complain about your name so pick whatever feels right for you.
That being said, if its all the same to you try to avoid numbers in your name (like john324) cause it just looks lame and easy to mistake you for someone else (in this case the evil supervillain john342). But thats true of the internet in general, not just eve. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

Which way of naming your character is more accepted and is more "correct" when it comes to naming a character?
I began reading the works of Isaac Asimov around 1970, so to me it's normal to name characters the way he did: first name and last name, with both names sounding kind of science fiction-y and kind of like they could be actual names, or mutated versions of actual names.
In online games you see so many people with such absurd or borderline offensive names, and I've never been able to figure that out. I just say "Well, this character is your alter ego, dude, but if you want to go around with that as your name, it's your subscription money..."
To me, online games are places where you can reinvent yourself and create your own heroic story. My characters are extensions of myself.
When I played Asheron's Call, in keeping with the sword-and-bow theme of that game (I never played with magic), I named my characters after obscure pharohs, Mongol generals, Hittite kings, etc.
That game had plenty of people running around with names like "Smelly Feet 666"
So does this game. Oh well. There's no "rule" to character naming. Whatever you feel comfortable being known as.
