Theres actually a more satisfying etymology than that. Rugby actually started to formulate (in Rugby school) before Association Football was ever established- for all intents and purposes, the games evolved side by side.
The better etymology (than "the game used to be about kicking, but now it's not") is that the word "foot" in football refers to being on-foot, rather than kicking. To be specific, it'd be the antonym of "horse ball". You see, at the time football first appeared in medieval Britain, Polo (a game played on horse back) was extremely popular. Horse back games, rather obviously, were limited to the elite (who could afford horses). The commoners, as such, played "ball games on foot", or "football". Voila, etymology. --------

I don't get why everybody was shocked when America took a vague dislike to Posh Spice and her silly TV show.
We don't like her, why on earth would anybody else?

Not shocked, just disappointed. Its become harder and harder to offload her somewhere that isn't Blighty.

Originally by: Mad Mackem Im afraid your wrong mate, Football is the fastest growing sport in America.
You should embrace it because it is the best sport in the world.
Also, if you yank's put the time and effort in, you could also become the biggest football power in the world.
It's the fastest growing because no one here likes it! So any growth is going to be fast, percentage wise...
It will never compete with any of the major sports in this country as far as fan base & TV money is concerned, far from it in-fact... Like one person said, it's behind female softball...
It may be fun for kids in this country to play, but as far as a sport to watch for entertainment, no way...
I played it in grade school & high school. When I played, it always turned into a bloodbath, it basically turned into American Football without touching the ball with your hands... But all the tackling & shoving, and now kicking your opponents trying to hurt them, was all there... :)

Originally by: DarkMatter That sport will never be big in the USA.
Many children in this country are brought up playing "soccer" these days, mainly because boys and girls can play it together, and it's not a rough sport, so Mom's want their sons to play that instead of American Football because they don't want little Johnny getting hurt.
Well, when kids grow up, and the jock mentality & peer pressure set in, they change to American Football. The only ones who stick with soccer are the ones who are very talented, whose Moms still wont let them play football, or the ones who would get killed playing football.
Any other normal high school male jock is going to play football.
Here is why our sport is called football: American Football
In the USA, soccer is NOT a manly sport. Both men and women in this country like watching manly sports. Soccer is viewed as a sport that is more finesse than anything, which translates to gheyness for the American sports fan...
Do you actually WATCH football (soccer)?
Some of the injuries you see on the field will make you cringe, from tripping over someone's foot and somersaulting onto your face, to someone's foot clubbing you in the face on its way to kicking the ball, to two guys *****ing their skulls together tryin to headbutt the ball.
When I was younger they made me goalie, some kid kicked the ball into my face from 10 feet away so hard I was on the floor seeing stars.
No "ghey" helmets or girlygirl shoulderpads, just a bunch of immensely fit athletes on a grass field tryin to wrangle a ball into the opposite goal.
The face of America is changing, the population is changing, fewer NASCAR types, less school budget for baseball equipment, football equipment, basketball nets, hardwood floors and so forth.
For soccer all you need is an open space and a ball, I've seen pickup games start spontaneously in seconds, 2 guys come to the park kicking a ball around, pretty soon you got people joining in and you end up with 10 v 10 on the baseball diamond.
Baseball sucks. (American) Football sucks. Basketball is so-so. Tennis is kinda ghey.
Soccer, that's the ultimate international sport for real athletes only.
So what if girls can play. You ever heard of womens boxing? I suppose 2 women in a ring beating each other until their faces look like hamburger meat is ghey too.

America will never feel that way.
Most sports fans in this country despise it...
As much as some media outlets try to push it on us, we don't really want it... We'll watch the poker championships over soccer any day...
And yeah, if we played our version of football without pads, players careers would not last too long.
Get your best soccer players on the field against American football players without pads, and let them play our game... We'll see which athletes last longer...
There are about 40 guys here at work, NONE of them would sit down to watch soccer, unless their kid is playing in the game...
That is typical across workplaces in America. American Football is where it's at for almost ALL men in America. Others prefer the NBA or MLB or NASCAR, but soccer will never be close to those as far as fan support.
We just don't care... Just like most of UK & EU could give two ****s about American Football...

And whats this "we" stuff?
I'm an American. Duh.
I love football (what you call soccer.)
I play it with people all the time, theres more ppl at the park playing football than baseball, in fact NOBODY around here plays baseball or American football.
BTW I'm from NYC.
I think there's a rural America that loves American Football, Baseball, NASCAR and Country music.
And I think there's the urban America that like European Football, Basketball and R&B.
I'm from the urban America crowd.

It's great that you like it so much, but to tell me only urban America likes American football is just quite silly...
Soccer is easier to play as far as an organized sport in terms of cost... That's really the only reason many partents are turning towards that as something they will let their kids play... All other sports cost more...
It's cheaper & safer, easier on the parents... And it's not surpasing any sport in terms of fan base & TV contracts anytime soon...

Reading comprehension please.
I said that football (soccer to you) is more popular in urban centers than in rural areas.
Cheaper? Definitely.
Safer? Maybe.
Promotes better fitness than American football? Definitely.
Edit : Thats not to say ppl in rural areas aren't catching on. I think football will grow in popularity everywhere and the more traditional sports (baseball etc) will die out.

You know what I meant, lol...
You live in NYC... I bet there are more NFL fans than soccer fans... Until I see a poll of every sports fan in NYC stating otherwise, I won't believe it...
It doesn't matter what kids play in the park. It matters what generates the highest ratings on TV...

There are some media outlets here in the US that try hard to push it...
There are also a lot of soccer mommies & daddies trying to push it on ppl and their kids as well... They are very annoying, lol...
I'm 33, when I was 13 I heard the same crap about soccer, was forced to play it in gym class at school etc. Yuppy parents touting it as the sport that would replace that brutal/barbaric American football... Well it's been 20 years, and soccer has really gone nowhere here in the US...
EDIT: Oops. I'm now 34, lol... Just had a B-Day and am not used to that number yet...

Soccer in the united states has actually done pretty well in the recent past. Sure, Its not drawing the same audience that is huge as say the super bowl, but the league is only a few years old.
As an example lets look at the Washington nationals versus Dc United.
Both the same stadium in the same city averaging 23,062 versus 18,871 for this year. Sure United isn't pulling the same number of people, but that's hardly nothing.

I am an American and prefer our football to soccer. Its much faster paced, involves quite a bit more strategy, full contact, and a joy to watch. I have played soccer when I was growing up, and seen European soccer in Europe. Soccer is constantly running for an entire half, but alot of it is just very boring, not to mention the incredible gaggle that happens 90% of the time the ball is near the goal. Its about as strategically deep as basketball (i.e. not to much) and just about as fun to watch aswell.
This isn't to mention the soccer fans themselves. Oddly enough if you judged football vs. Soccer by the fan alone, I think you would have to say that football is much more civilized. By that I mean when was the last time you saw a football riot and how often do they occur? Being a Chicago Bears fan I can safely go to Green Bay to watch a game and not fear for my life, same for Green Bay fans coming down to Chicago (although you may get the occasional bag of peanuts thrown at you.) If the bears win, chicago will not be left cleaning up the rubble (and victims) the next day. You guys have soccer hooligans.
The breaks between plays in football allow for a relief from the action and actually helps to build tension. You have time to think about the situation and options. In soccer the left guard is open, he gets the ball, while the center tries to shake his man free for a scoring opportunity, 948 times a game. Turnovers in football happen 1-5 times a game normally, and are major events turning the tide of the entire game. A turnover in soccer happens every 30 seconds and every once in a blue moon leads to a goal.
I know its cool to hate America and everything in it, but to be honest we don't give a crap about 99% of Europe 99% of the time (btw 97.4% of all statistics are made up.)

I think eventually Soccer (Football) will be like Hockey in the US. Hockey is loved by lots of people in Northern parts of the country, and I think soccer will someday be loved by those in the Southwest part. Neither will ever be hugely popular because they're "too foreign" and Americans tend to be a bit jingoistic. ----- Any mistake I've made in spelling, grammar, or syntax, as well as any faulty cultural or historical statments should be attributed to me and not my nation of origin. |

I actually have noticed this about American soccer fans as well. I was talking to an American friend of mine a while ago; he was born and raised in Britain for about 10 years, then moved to America (and is now in his 20s), and took with him a healthy interest in soccer. The way he talks about it makes me think he's practically become an activist- handing out flyers advertising games, him and his team going down to the local park to try and snag the interest of some of the youngsters, and so forth. Its like he's evangelising or something.
But anyhow, I have a theory. Soccer is undeniably the single most "important" (in terms of interest, viewership, and cash investment) sport in the world, with the notable exception of America. The thing is, 99% of the worlds population care more about what nation is best at soccer than any other sport. And the thing is- I think it hurts the poor American fan's pride. You see, the US is one of the more populous countries in the world, the richest country, with more cash poured in to sport than any other country, and with a massive sporting culture. And yet, the poor bedraggled American soccer fan has to suffer the indignity of fielding one of the most mediocre teams in the world.
If that were your sport, I'm sure you'd evangelise about it too
Anyhow, obviously being a non-American I don't have the foggiest about it, but it's certainly not impossible that soccer could suddenly bloom in popularity. It's not really here or there that it's been around for a long time already. After all, they were eating pizzas in Italy since the 18th century, but you couldn't have got one for love nor money in the UK until the 1970's... --------

Edited by: Mindless Slave on 23/07/2007 21:12:08 Ok since I had to look the word up, here is the definition of jingoistic:
Quote: Jingoism is chauvinistic patriotism, usually associated with a War Hawk political stance. In practice, it refers to sections of the general public who advocate the use of threats or of actual force against other countries in order to sa***uard a country's national interests.
Actually I wouldn't go so far as to stereotype an entire nation as being that. I might as well say that French people will always surrender, Germans are really racists, English are troglodytes, and Europeans have America envy.
As far as Americans not liking soccer based upon non-performance, I don't buy into that for one second. European nations have (American)football teams that are really terrible, so is that the reason why the sport hasn't caught on in Europe? Did basketball as a sport suddenly drop off the map in the United States after we lost in the Olympics, twice?
The states have an incredibly strong culture which is hard to penetrate, just look at how Hollywood influences the rest of the worlds media. American movies, music, and other types of media dominate across the globe. Its a rare occurance when the opposite happens (foreign cultural phenomena penetrates the states.)
