Edited by: Jagstang on 22/07/2007 22:07:24 Hi,
Looking for a little advice. I started the game way back in 2004, but I only played for a month or so. Played again for a couple of months around a year ago, now I'm back again for who knows how long.
One thing that has become clear to me is that I COMPLETELY screwed up at the creation stage. I didn't fully understand the way the training process works, as affected by attributes and so on.
I always intended to be a combat pilot, mission running etc, despite the following text appearing on my character screen: Career Industry, Ancestry Artists, Specialization Engineer....... I don't know what I was thinking back then so don't ask. Chances are i wasn't thinking at all.
With a couple of +2 implants my perception and wp are 16 and 17 respectively. I did have the common sense to take the right learning skills. I have 15 intelligence which is obviously a total waste.
How much have I actually set myself back and what would you do in my place?

I'm in exactly the same boat. Well, sort of. My attributes are terrible for combat, but so far I've managed fine and now have something like 12m SP in gunnery alone.
Unless you really hate your character and want a new one, it's perfectly fine to carry on.

You don't mention what your learning skills are at or your other attributes so its kinda hard to tell. Optimal combat attributes would be perception highest followed closely by intelligence. Memory and will power about the same and not more than a point or 2 behind int. Charisma you can consider your dump stat but I would have it fairly close to mem/will. So something like 11/9/7/7/5 or 9/9/8/8/5 would be great. There are alot of points in the engineering/electronics trees as well as drones and mechanic. The Primary stat is what you need high the secondary isn't as important(it counts for about a third)

Most combat players need perception and intelligence the most, since perception is the primary for most gunnery, missile and spaceship command skills while intelligence is the primary for most electronics, engineering and mechanic skills. Together they also make navigation easier to train. You need a lot of electronics, engineering, mechanic and/or navigation to be a good combat player, so ultimately you need intelligence almost as much as you need perception, and perhaps even more than you need willpower. As long as your base charisma is low you'll be fit for most combat training schemes.

I've found it doesn't really matter that much. Your weaknesses in some areas will be strengths in others. I made a researcher/engineer character as a second account back when I didn't really know what I was doing. I always figured he would just research and build stuff, never fight. I started grinding standings with him a month ago and discovered that he was one skill away from fitting a complete T2 passive shield tank. Now he's blitzing through level 3 combat missions like a charm. Sure, it will take him a bit longer to train ship command and weapon skills, but when it comes to picking up the essential shield, mechanic and engineering skills, a character with low perception and willpower does just fine.

Seeing your subject, you have 3.5mil SP with this character? If you have any concerns about this 3.5mil SP character, this would be the time to scrap it for a new one. Making up 3.5mil SP wouldn't take much time at all. Especially now, since characters start with 800k SP.
Imo, I'd say scrap it and create something you know you'll like. I'm a bit OCD that way though. Other people will tell you that SP in any skill(s) isn't going to hurt you and you can continue on from there. Either way, I wish you luck with whatever your choose.
Cheers --

My advice is this: your character is fine. Keep his skills training and don't worry about the number of 'sp' you have.

15 intelligence is awfully low for a combat character.

I don't think he has full learnings actually (maybe just basic learnings). Anyways, ya, combat pilots need quite of intelligence (otherwise it takes them a while to train up the combat-related engineering, electronics and mechanic skills). A combat character that only has perception and willpower will takes more time learning the skills needed for fitting their ships, managing their capacitor, locking on to targets, using electronic warfare modules, tackling, etc. There are so many necessary combat-related intelligence-based skills in the game that most combat players end up with about half their skills requiring intelligence in their first year. Maybe...

the only advanced learning i havent trained to at least lvl 3 is logic. and yes, charisma is indeed my lowest stat at 9 followed by memory. i don't have an implant for int either so perhaps i will invest in that. i have 8 days left on medium hybrid V so i guess i'm going to finish that, then i'll buff my int up and work on the other skills you suggested. thanks for the input, i feel better!

I used to think I was pretty gimped also as with +3 implants I have 17 perc and 18 will (all learning skills @ 4). My Int and Memory seem to be making up for it though as I have close to 21 in int and 24 in mem, so you'll basically make up in support skills for what you will take longer to get in combat.

All your SPs (except Charisma, unless you are going for massive gang bonus' - and fear not, CCP will be adding more to this soon. . .trust me) will be used at one point or another. A high Perception/will character may breeze through Ships, Guns and missle skills, but they will pay in tanking, rig, drone, electronics and engeneering skills. You will discover that training to fly the ship is actually only the tip of the iceburg - just because you have the 'requirments' does not make you equal to the top pilots that have specilized. There are all those Electronics and Engeneering skills (called support skills) that add more to your ship through hidden bonus'. . .and most people spend a great deal of time training their support skills. Examples are 'Long Range Targeting' - sure its required for Logistics, but if you are making a T2 Fleet sniper, its a key skill. Or 'Signature Analysis' - sure, its a pre-req for Recon, but same applyes. And then there are all the cap skills, and CPU reduction skills, and on and on and on. . .
Point is, SPs are not waisted, they pay off later. The only time spacific SPs matter is if you are making a very specilized alt (hauler, trading, capital. . .etc.) If you are making a well rounded 'main' then keep your chracter - its hard to go wrong.
