I lost 4 Containers in the last two days to a Pirate Guild in 1.0 space. They just capture it with a Badger and fly away, although its a secured one. Im new to this game and mining is a good way to make money. But how can i prevent thieves from capturing hopeless hours of grind? One time i waited and attacked in a cruiser. They came with an Battleship and now i lost my best ship and aint got the money to replace it. A huge setback for a beginner and sure a reason for some to stop playing. I get piracy in unsecure zones below 1.0. But this is really sad to make money from inexperienced players who cant defend themselves. And it seemes to be sanctioned by the game mechanics itself.
So what can i do to prevent this or how else can i make money without grinding that stupid missions?

First off you need to get it out of your head that there is such a thing as SAFE SPACE in EvE. There isn't, not anywhere, the only difference between 0.1 sec systems and 1.0 sec systems is that the consequences for illegal actions get more severe and occur quicker. In 0.5-1.0 you can still be shot, even without provication, it's just that if you are shot without provication in those systems the attacker will lose his ship too, that's the only garauntee.
As to your particularly problem, the reason your containers got stolen is that you did not anchor them. If they are not anchored then they are freely floating in space and anyone can scoop them up (as they are effectively space litter they can do so without agro). You can not anchor cans in 0.8-1.0 sec systems so using a secure can in those areas is useless.
Either mine in a 0.7 system or below and anchor your cans, mine straight into your hold and drop it off each time it's full (as mining was originally intended to work!) or get a buddy/alt and mine into a jetcan and have him scoop it into a hauler each time.

Many people manage to do jet can mining without problems. I suspect that you ( or the belts you mine in ) have been targetted as easy pickings by one or more members of a pirate corp.
Ways to get around it are...
1) Join a mining corp. 2) Move to another system. 3) Don't leave so much in your Jetcan, it will become less profitable for them. 4) Move goods to get money. Using a piece of software such as EVE trade analyser you can find trade routes you are happy flying and get a reasonable amount of money providing you put down a decent stake ( 3-4 Mill ).

Well obviously EVE isn't the right game for the OP, which is fine, but I'll write something else anyway.
As you were mining in a 1.0 system, you were probably in the same system that you started off in. This makes you a huge and easy target for people. If you make a little effort and move your operations to a quieter system, you will likely be harassed less often, if at all. In all my time in EVE, I've never had any ore I've mined stolen from me. This is because I'm careful, and make sure to scout out a quiet area to mine in first. This not only has the advantage of less ore thievery, but also likely means more asteroids, as there aren't as many people around to mine them

I will try that. Maybe it helps. Im just so frustrated right now because i lost weeks of grind for nothing. I have to start right back from scratch.
Whats the matter with that mining corps? How do they work?

Wait, you say they took your SECURE container?
For a secure container to be secure it must first be ANCHORED and a password be set.
You cannot anchor a secure container in 1.0, it has to be .7 or below.
Props for trying to fight back, I think you have the right attitude to play Eve.
Suggestions :
1) Grab your hauler, stick a mining laser on it, and afk mine in 1.0 0.9 systems. You can make about a mil an hour doing that.
2) Get out of Caldari space ASAP, it is a cesspool.
3) Contrary to logic, in alot of ways the game gets MORE dangerous the higher the sec rating. 1.0 systems such as Jita are notorious for highsec piracy and gank attempts, and as I mentioned you cannot anchor a secure container unless in .7 and below.
4) Grab some giant secure containers, park them around an asteroid belt, and mine into them. When you feel like it, go empty the containers with your hauler and reprocess (make sure you have good faction with the station and also refining skills to level 3 or 4.)
5) Even better find a nice quiet system with hardly anybody around. Do a little scouting and see who lives there, if they are all miners, then its a good spot.
6) Keep local open at all time and visible. You want to see who is in your home system. If its someone other than a regular, you need to check em out and use a scanner to see what they are flying. With practice you will be able to spot trouble before it comes flying into your belt.
7) Fly only what you can afford to replace.
8) Sometimes doing missions are necessary to get faction, for good refine rates. I share your distaste of mission running.
I like your attitude, you don't snivel like most newbs, I think you have what it takes to be a long-term Eve player.
Welcome to Eve.

Edited by: Kradra Trublia on 26/07/2007 11:29:57 Fit a warp jammer to your mining vessel. You may not have any guns, but you can hold that thief there forever until he releases your cargo. He may have stabs, but usually they put expanders in the lows I think.
You'll have to be quick though. When I theived, I used to align for warp before stealing, giving them very little time at all to scramble me.

Also, never fly what you can't afford to lose. Don't bring the cruiser out of the bay if you can't afford to replace it.

Actually I would advise against the Warp Scrambler idea. I'm pretty sure that activating a warp scrambler on them will flag you to them too, allowing them to attack you back.

I guard a friend when he mines if I am bored and free, a caracel with a sensor booster or a Moa with sensor booster tends to disinvite most can stealers. ΦConcord, the ultimate noob ganksquad!Φ

A mining corp is just that, a corporation that focuses on mining. You gain security by having other people to mine with. Everything is safer with friends in EVE. When you have friends you have multiple options to mine more securely. The first that comes to mind is that you can have a friend there in belt with you to move the mined ore right into a hauler as you place it in the jetcan. To find a mining corp, join the corp recruitment channel in game, you can then explain your goals and it is quite likely a corp will pick you up. EVE is playable solo, but it is way easier and safer when you have people to work with. -=^=-

A mining corp means a corp that does organized mining operations. Yes you will have to split your ore but you'll make that back by:
- Armed escorts taking on the rats, allowing you to use a pure mining build, yielding more ore. These escorts can also discourage/punish can thieves. - Haulers raking in your spoils so you don't have to stop mining every so often to bring your can in. This means more time spent on site = more ore. - A squadron leader with the mining foreman leadership skill (possibly also implants of the same type) giving you a mining yield bonus just for being in the same squadron. Again more ore.
It also gives you some people to chatter with while you spend an otherwise dull time shooting asteroids waiting for your cargo hold to fill up.

The thing to keep in mind is that EVE is truly balanced for cooperative play. There are a number of resources (POSes and gang bonusses to name but two) that are downright unavailable to people that are just soloing and that make a world of difference in how well a group can perform. Simply put, a well organized corporation in EVE will by definition be far more efficient at what they do than an equal number of soloing players doing the exact same thing could ever hope to be. No matter what aspect of the game it is.

Sounds like you could use a quick primer on agression flagging.
If the guy was in a hauler stealing and you had a combat ship waiting for him you should have easily killed him (depending on skills and if you could tackle him to keep him there but general haulers lose).
Once you attacked him (because he had stolen from you and thus flagged himself to you) he gets a flag to attack you back for the next 15 minutes. Mind you that *none* of his mates (gang or corp or whatever) can be a part of this. Just you and him unless you aggressed one of his friends as well.
Once his hauler is dead it is advisable to dock immediately and let the 15 minute timer pass. As you found out many thieves do it precisely to get a flag on you and kill you. Of course if you think you can handle whatever he rolls out in then have fun but he knows what you have so some advantage to him.
I have a Hulk setup I use precisely to bait ore thieves. They find themselves webbed and scrammed and dead in short order. Then I dock the Hulk, go to the bathroom, get something to drink and go back to mining 15 minutes later. Got a Caracal recently doing this (why he was using a Caracal to ore thieve I have no idea). Funn kill mail though when a mining ship nails a combat ship.

There are ways to get around this that do not require any warp stabalizers. Thus, I would advise against this since. Stick to mining until your cargohold is full and then going back to base.
Also, you should get a Badger or Iteron or some other indurstial ship and steal ore. It makes a nice way to make a living. Just keep in mind that there exist proper ways to do it.
