Not complaining but whats the reason for a scheduled 1hr (cough, cough)downtime everyday? Other games dont have this. Just curious what the reason is. |

It allows CCP to correctly orient the Flux Capacitors with the Warp core in order to prevent memory leakage from the 3rd and 4th quadrant.

There is so much trading and other loged stuff in this game...the database just overflows when you don't clear and backup it once a day *haha*
And since CCP appearently never deletes inactive accounts (or even banned isk seller accounts)... The database gets fuller every day OH NOES!!!!
Um...Yeah, that reminds me, why don't you delete these 546247865987967 banned Isk Spammer trial accounts? That should clear the database by 37% and reduce lag by 23%!?!?
Notice: I'm listening to the Epic Whine Song while writing this, so don't be too harsh with me...

In iceland, in 1453 I think, a law was passed that forbade any activity from lasting a whole day, as it was considered unatural, so the 1 hour downtime is basically CCP's (an icelandic company) way of staying true to this age-old icelandic law.

Edited by: Jim Pooley on 26/07/2007 12:16:56 It's a fair question, to which you will receive a fair answer. Indeed you are correct that not all games have a daily downtime. However, I am sure you will agree, Eve is like no other game. A game this big needs some "TLC", and maintenence. Sure, the server is, ahem, having issues atm, but once all is back to normal, the downtime will not always be a full hour. I have seen it back up after 30mins previously.
Think of it as an opportunity to do those jobs you keep putting off! ------------------------------------------

as enouph ppl already made fun out of you... there are several reasons for the downtime. overall i would call it maintenance. backup, database cleanups, small server fixes and they change the loadbalanceing of the nodes. besides - it gives me a break from time to time.

EVE > other games.
Pong and pacman dont have downtimes boohoo why does EVE have it?
There is rumored to be this thing called "Knowledgebase" or a function called Search!
If you would have used either this post would not be here, we would have not had to reply and everyone would have been able to enjoy another beer in stead of typing a reply to a topic that hits General Discussion EVERY week.

Edited by: Asestorian on 26/07/2007 12:38:45 The reason EVE has a downtime every day, and other games don't is pretty easy if you think about it. EVE runs on one big server, where everybody plays. However, other games all run on several much smaller servers, with only a very small amount of the games total population each. This means that the database and various other things on those servers is used much less, and therefore needs less maintenance.
CCP have once said I believe, that they tried running the server without a downtime every day. The server lasted 48 hours before it crashed completely, and was getting pretty bad in terms of performance long before that.
Edit: Also, the EVE servers are in London, England, not in Iceland. So all jokes based around Iceland are totally off

This joke actually has more truth to it than you think.
In Icelandic, we have "v÷kul÷g", which in direct translation would mean ... uh ... waking laws? Well, basically it makes sure no one is made to work around the clock (aimed especially at sailors, but applies to everyone else too I think). Anyway, a part of these laws was that no machine could be run without stopping. This was aimed especially at captains of smaller fishing boats. Machines that would be run constantly with no maintainance would become dangerous for the people working them.
That's why, in Iceland, every machine may not be run for more than 30 hours at a time. A special law was passed some years about power generating machines, if it provided power to residential or industrial areas of cities, it could be run for 7 days without stopping.
These laws however, do not apply to servers and/or computers. It is illegal to run a computer for more than 30 hours, so pretty much every server (be it webserver or some kind of game server) needs to go down almost daily.
Sorry if I don't have the specifics right, I'm doing this from the top of my head.

if youve ever run a database youll know that you have to run cleanups, and when your stored data exceeds your pcs 300 gig hard drive that takes a long time.
by running an optimizing script daily on a database it actually saves space. gives you space back from all the junk thats entered and bad requests.
have you ever restarted your pc just so you can run things again? memory leaks happen all the time even when the patches plug them. its not just the client end that gets them.
the reason they kick you off is so that you arent adding more to the database or logs and so the system have a break, can cool down and generally run better when you log in again (in theory).
some downtimes (please note) are only half an hour, so when they take the server down for maybe 2 hours cos of patches theyve already given you the possible playtime anyways.
Some systems dont need resetting in downtime hence shorter downtimes.
longer (1 hour ish ones) are generated by resetting more critical systems such as the market and rebooting.
i hope this finally explains this all

I think what they do is that they replace the plutonium rods in the flux capacitors...that takes about 15 minutes, then they need to have some nice bree...

So there won't be an unscheduled 1 hr downtime every day.
BTW, a lot of times the downtime only lasts 30-35 minutes. This is good to know if you are trying to do something that others don't want you to do.

Most games do have a downtime of some sort or other. Wow for example has 1 downtime per week that lasts about 6 hours

Yeah, UO has downtime, WoW has downtime; the difference is that they normally have different downtimes on different shards, users can just fire up a different character on a different server.

Why would I be joking?
I came home for lunch today. It would of been nice to log into Eve for a quick overview.
Isnt the downtime the busiest time in the day for online games for the GMT zone?
