Originally by: FireFoxx80 Yeah, UO has downtime, WoW has downtime; the difference is that they normally have different downtimes on different shards, users can just fire up a different character on a different server.
Downtimes in UO were weird. The servers were backed up while the game remained 'live' for around 15 minutes or so, leading to what used to be called 'server wars'. These were free for all gank-fests that had no consequences since when the server came back up, you'd appear 15 minutes before you went on the rampage! (or something like that! )

Isnt the downtime the busiest time in the day for online games for the GMT zone?
The problem is that no matter what time the DT is at, it's going to affect somebody badly. Most other games have different shards for different timezones, so that the downtime can always be in the middle of the night for the people playing on it. EVE has everyone on the same server, so CCP decided it would be best to simply have their hours downtime during the day when their server people in London were actually there and at work, without having to always be on the night shift.

I think what they do is that they replace the plutonium rods in the flux capacitors...that takes about 15 minutes, then they need to have some nice bree...
But surely the law applies to the company because its registered in Iceland and CCP owns the servers rather than leasing them from someone else so therefore I believe Icelandic law may apply.

Personally i prefer it as long as it stays one hour. It forces people playing to remember there is such a thing as Real Life. Also Its better that its only one or two hours instead of day long or two day long downtimes because people dont perform maintenance till a major problem occurs (Anarchy online, world of warcrap, ever*****, etc etc) One thing that comes out of this you KNOW something is majorly fubared if they have to extend the downtime. Rather know its something serious than just people who have gotten lazy and forgotten to do standard repair work.

I heard that that its because of lag. It needs to rest one hour each day to be effective again.

But thats when people in the GMT zone ARENT at work, they are on break.
I know any time will affect a group of people, but the fact that the servers are in London makes it a strange time for server downtime, when most people can log on at that time.

Sharkbait doesn't actually know what it is, but he does know something happens.
Sharky is actually one of the more straight forward devs
Remember the post when TQ wouldn't start after a patch, he got on the forums and said something like "servers are jacked, working on it"
Made everyone happy.
I think it was the time he said something along "We're screwed" :)

Now imagine, a fleet fight takes place during DT usual operations but server is up. Oops, something went wrong, server goes to have a short nap.
Well....you end up with all parties getting their fingers itchy for petition writing, and while they are at it, second part is dropping massive drama bombs on forums. From this, whatever the server runs on, will go overload and take even longer nap.
Well...thats not a very good one, but still an explanation. ---

Please dont complain about DT if you've never written DB code. It's a ***** and when something goes wrong, it goes to hell very very quickly. Honestly, I appreciate the DT every day and it is more commonly 20-35 minutes, not the full scheduled hour.
You gotta ask yourself if you want to have scheduled DT once a day for 1/2 hour or unscheduled DT that can last hours and could result in missing items, skills, ships, characters, and possibly entire server rollbacks.
EvE needs DT more then EvE needs you.

I think I read something about DB server not deleting some items into the DB to reduce write access, and they are deleted during the DT, not sure about who posted that, was during the warp to 0 patch or like....

The latest news talks about finally doing an upgrade of the python version, which needet some modification to python itself and the eve core, which is something they usually don't do much (at least thats what they say in other dev blogs). That will settle down, just give the devs some time.

Oh lets see because the in the GMT timezone 11.00 - 12.00 is still 11.00 - 12.00 and hardly lunchtime? I think you may mean the UK's only little timezone which is currently GMT +1

It's ok, Bill Gates won't throw too bad of a hissy if you tell us the truth...
I take it that you have intimate knowledge and many years experience working with databases such as Oracle, DB2 and SQL, and could explain at length to us and CCP why they should consider using anything but their current database engine.
If so, I'm all ears.

Because doing this might improve overall game performance and solve some fundamental errors with the game and its design, but hot-damn can't try doing that, might fix something.
