I just did my first Worlds Collide level 4 in a Domi fitted for Warden sniping. Is it common to have to chase the last Core Rear Admiral in the initial warp zone over 250km in order to open the gate?
I originally engaged him at about 100km out and he kept moving back (he moved back over 250km from his original spawn point). verrrrrrry annoying.
I just want to know if I got a "bugged" mission or if I should expect this behavior again in the future.

get him to target you.... drop the sentrys.... move backwards away from the sentrys and him.... he will com towards you. The sentrys will start to pound him as he gets in range........

I would never have thought of that.

Tried something similiar - didn't work
The Core Rear Admiral would suddenly stop aggro and withdraw just outside of my range. Then it would re-aggro on the drones. The only way I was finally able to pop him was to pull in a corp mate to web him - even then it kept switching aggro.
I still want to know if I got a bugged mission or is this behavior typical or worlds collide mission rats?

It does the same to me (domi / sentries) .. except they don't have time to flee (thx to my cnr alt fitted with torps)
In fact, many (all ?) serpentis from the first warp point (in guristas / serpentis version) have a chase range quite short .. something like 30-40 km from their pop, maybe their real spot is far away from this ..
Try to go toward them if you can bear the whole spot dps, and don't try to go in the sentries tactic, just agro and continue to go near them, kill em with heavy drones .. quite a hassle but at least it prevents from de-agro / drone-agro

hmmm . . . so this is a serp "feature" huh?
Well, I guess the level 3 rats went down too quick for them to switch aggro or flee and I never noticed. Time to train up some more skills to increase the DPS.
*sigh* 24 days for Drone Interfacing / Level 5

I never noticed the Serpentis doing this on any mission, much less World's Collide. I just shot them at long range with my Megathron.
I have seen mission rats run very, very, very far away. The Amarr transport in Surprise, Surprise ran 200km from me before he finally came back into range. A Serpentis cruiser once did the same to me on Level 3 the Blockade.
So, I think it's just a bug that happens every now and then. ------------

It shouldn't be 'common' but it can certainly happen if things go a bit wrong. Very annoying, especially in a relative short-range ship like the Nighthawk. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)
