Damm alt post.
PvP starts before F1 and ends after F8. That's why arenas are not really suitable for Eve.

Hum, any argument anything ? So far, the only arguments against this idea are : - omg, the current pvp sucks so much that people might just stop it ! No arena pls ! - change is bad ! - current pvp = hardcore, arena pvp = not hardcore.
The validity of those argument can be discussed...
For me, the first one tells me you should do what Curzon did in this thread. Instead of whining, find a solution to make your side of PvP funnier or more interesting. You guys are trying to stop any attempt to put more pew pew into a hardcore pvp game... The second one tells me you don't understand what a MMORPG is. The third one is in my opinion irrelevant, what additional harm can a something that already exists (and didn't have any of the effect you're predicting) do ?
I also only see a few arguments for it.
The most important for me is that one : it's like the trade system, the alliance system, the fleet system... well most automated functions in Eve. Something that is needed by the players, already in place using more or less adapted means (currently can flagging works the best) taking dedication and time, and the only thing that is asked is to reduce the amount of dedication and time needed to put this into place.
Another argument, simple : it's more pew pew. More isk sinks. More ships blown up. Better PvP "during fight" skills. Whether you're a carebear or hardcore, miner or PvPer, everyone benefits from those.

I would pay 5$ more on my subscription for such a feature.
Too bad there are no polls on e-o. Otherwise I bet we would see that this would be everything else but a niche functionality.

We could just have a Mirror button or something for people who want to; you click it, and your character is set to mirror to Sisi come downtime (e.g., scheduled). After that, we can have the arena fun there. :)

There is no reason that having pvp arenas, implemented correctly, would take away from the hardcore EVE experience.
The players who want to shape 'Empires' in 0.0 will do so regardless. The players who engage in low-sec will still do the same.
If a player 'fielded' a BS with T2 fittings only to loose in a 5 minute arena battle of their choosing, it is still a loss. It still has a high price of millions if not 100's of millions of ISK.
MOST players will not enter and endless cycle of entering one pvp arena after the other to loose a ship that cost that much without thinking about it and trying top adapt and learn and enjoy the pvp.
Conversely, people will use cheaper ships with cheap mods as well but it does not matter, it is still a loss plus it will help the overall economy û money going out due to player loss and buying of more ships.
Arena pvp would not make this game WOW û Amazing to see this again and again and again.. You die in WOW you don't loose hard earned equipment.
There are creative ways to implement this and it would add another level of depth to this game.
I would love to know from the Devs why they would not want to implement such a system (note: I am not asking other players thoughts on what they think the Devs would say); or why they would.
More fights makes EVE better not worse.
More options to a game adds depth. Like many have said, this is not WOW that has a poorly implemented PVP system into the MIX but EVE, at its core is pvp û there is always a way.

There are many reasons to do NOT have arena style pvp in eve. the most important is, games like wow have an increasing number...yes, increasing number...of player leaving the game because of this.
In long term this destroys games infrastructure. First you have arena events, then people want better and better equiment as reward from it, until mission running becomes sensless, since rewards are so much better. Production of T2+ items becomes senssless, since rewards in arena are so much better. pvp in space becomes sensless, since there are not any of the "uber" rewards from the arena to get from this...
In long term arena is not a good idea at all...for all players in eve, and for all styles of play in eve, since arena and benefits from playing this will chage the game by time dramatically.

This is such a blanket statement and encompessing for the whole community. And not to be offensive but you did not explain why these things would be bad.
The comparison to WOW does not tranlsate. I donÆt see how. The pvp system in WOW is an after-thought and not even orginal.
EVE is the most orginal mmorpg on the market after 3+ years. The Devs make smart choices on how to implement game featuers (for the most part, I know many will not agree with this).
A constructed Arena setting can be created to enhance the game and not detract from the game. Everything we argue on this post, for or against, is all theory until its implemented and for the most part the perspective of many people (about 50% of the posts here so far) their seems to be a favor for it.
Last, I choose to play EVE and only EVE. Other games are lacking and have no depth or thought beyond pointing and clicking. The desire is not to ruin this game but add what would (hopefully) be positive featuers.

Side note : senseless isn't really the most accurate word for what you are describing. Please remember than some people on this forum ain't really native speaker... meaningless or pointless would be in my opinion easier to understand.
1st : as for WoW players leaving because of arenas, proof or STFU. As far as I know, subscriptions are augmenting there. 2nd : even if you should be right, assuming that adding something that made player leave Wow means that players will also leave Eve if that thing is implemented there ? I thought WoW <> Eve... 3rd : What you describe here is called whining. People have been whining for better equipment, less expensive t2 gears, more easy money in high sec, and all kind of free stuff and cookie cutter setups for years and didn't get it... It's called balancing. I believe that if rewards for arena fighting are ever necessary (personally looting the losers will satisfy me) CCP will balance them right, and will not listen to that kind of whining... Therefore your argument is void. 4th : Changing the game is bad ? Learn the definition of a MMORPG.
Thank you for participating. Next time, bring real arguments and don't force non-native people like me to guess whatever you wanted to say.

This is one of the few long threads that havent totally derailed. I kind of like it.
Personally, still undecided if its a good feature for the game, but I would use it if it existed, and I believe it would increase the fighting between people by quite a lot.

And if you had put and also read the few sentenses before in your quote as well, then you would not have written what you did!
The rewards that people will request for arena style pvp will destroy the game in long term, because sooner or later players have to do arena to keep competitive. This has a major influence on this game as it had an wow and other games and regardless of if you want to understand this side effect or not, that will not make a change to the consequences arena style pvp will do as it did to ohter games before.
But I am glad you are so proud of playing only and really only eve. You are my very personal hero of the day for this

Please keep your posts constructive. Anything else shows defense arguments and does not contribute to a positive discussion. Leave that for the CAOD thread.
The Devs can dictate what the rewards are û reading the thread in its entirety would show people are saying that. If people whine at that point, that is not different then the rest of the day to day stuff on the forums

I just had an epiphany.
1 out of every 10 detractors that come here to naysay the idea of arena combat make no sense at all. None. Zilch.
You have to search hard through this thread to find someone who disagrees with the idea and manages to make sense out of it. "Eve != WoW" doesn't count as a sensical argument. We don't want Battlegrounds in Eve ,just a freakin' free fire zone with some restrictions on it to encourage non-PvPers to PvP.

The part where he said you shouldn't ignore the counter arguments.
Like "Devs will balance the rewards, therefore saying that "arenas shouldn't be in game because the rewards will be too high because of whiners" is irrelevant.
It's been said 3 times already. Follow Mcgregor's advice and keep the thread from derailing please.

We are only suggesting a type of system that can be implemented. Not what the rewards are.
If I understand correctly, people are equating an Events style arena play with what CCP now conducts for PVP events.
The rewards for those events are 'uber'. That is not what this post is suggesting.
A pvp arena should be harsh, allow for betting and be a gladiator type reality. The reward is the satisfaction of beating your enemy

I have no issue with it being implemented if people want to use it, but personally I don't think I'd ever be bored enough to do it.
Half the fun of pvp in EVE is that it's pretty spontaneous, you never know when you're going to get a fight and you don't know what's going to turn up in the middle of the fight. You have to be prepared to adapt instantly and always on the lookout for the other guy trying to trick you into a fight you're not going to win. By comparison the arena just seems stagnant and uneventful, you'd remove so much out of the pvp equasion in these static fights that all it comes down to is ship fitting and luck of the ewar. If you balance it on ship numbers/ship types, you'll just find the super rich beating everyone out there with no risk to their ships, and EW boredom dominating the battle (you only have to look at the past alliances tournaments to see how people setup small ships in 'fair' combat).
But if that's what you're after, it's no loss to the community and a feature is a feature. As long as the reward is purely the enjoyment of both parties then theres nothing to be feared from it.
Just a further comment though, you certainly can find fights in EVE which are not gank fests or lagged out fleet battles. Gather up a few mates and go harass low sec/0.0 dwellers and keep things moving and you never know what you will stumble across. The argument that 'pvp in EVE sucks because all that happens is you get lagged out/desynced in a giant turkeyshoot' is *******s because if you really wanted to avoid doing that type of fight you'd never engage in one. This thread is testament to the fact that you're certainly not alone in wanting to avoid the blob and that the current state of things is not an artifical requirement for numbers, rather the result of player mentality. Is it a shame that in a sandbox game people gravitate towards eachother for protection? Yes, but thats what we get for having as little hardline limitations as possible in the game!

Indeed. I don't know where these suggestions keep coming from that there should be exterior rewards for people participating in the arena.
All I want to see is the ability to pew-pew with someone else. Betting? I'll drop ISK on myself, but this kind of system would have to be player run. IE, someone taking bets on the side. I imagine that most fights would be on the spot though, not planned out events.
Just want to warp in and pew pew. Against someone else. Not against 15 someone elses.

Im a bit hesitant towards having a feature that sets up a fight for you. To me that sound like a fight-simulator inside the game. Yes, you loose your ship wich you paid for if you loose the fight but it is still a fight sim. The fight would not be with in the set world, it would be a generated "fake" fight with some perks or something. Sure I would like to se more smaller fights out there but I would never ask the system/game to create a pretend fight scenario for me with limitations and bouderies just to get a fight the way you want it. It's like if the mining community was to ask for a low-sec system to mine in where no pirates would be able to interfere or the stones never went ou, just because they like that kind of mining-style more. Or a trader was to ask for a new market outside the real market where all items had the same price with no competition between sellers just because the people on the REAL market don't sell me items the prices I want to.
Ok, the simile does not work all the way because it would make you more money but the thought of asking for something that goes outside the the set world of Eve and its rules just because you can't get the fights you want is to me a no.

In the end, yes, I admit it. I am afraid that people will stay in empire playing this semipvp-game instead of going for the complete package. The "honour & glory" of being arenachampion will attract pilots into it and it will compete with "the real thing". The talk about external rewards just brings this idea from bad to worse.

Huggo:
Those fond memories are well and good, but the problem is that they apply to a miniscule portion of the Eve population. Really, look at the distribution of players in the galaxy. The map and statistics say that your experience is a unique one shares by a tiny fraction of the players in Eve.
For this being a PvP game, there is precious little PvP.
And when someone suggests something to increase the amount of PvP, a bunch of folks show up and say "whaa! Don't do it! We don't want more PvP!"

That's an amazingly close minded statement. Ill put it very simply: Getting blown up by a force of people that you had NO chance against isn't fun for most people. This is why the majority of the EvE population stays in high-sec, while they probably would like to try their skills fighting another person, it's just too difficult to find a fair fight.
All Im asking is that CCP incorporate a way for me to be guaranteed a fair, or sort of fair, fight every so often.
TL;DR version: People want to PvP, they just don't because it's too hard to find a fair fight. Getting ganked isn't fun. Allow us a way to more easily find a fair fight.

Fair fight? What IS a fair fight for someone like YOU? Ohnoes, he got ecm.. that¦s unfaaair! *whinage extravaganza commencing* Dampeners? Nos? Maybe 2 cruisers against your battleship? For this being a PvP game, there is precious little PvP.
And when someone suggests something to increase the amount of PvP, a bunch of folks show up and say "whaa! Don't do it! We don't want more PvP!"
Yeah.. well.. maybe it¦s just that I havent experienced the scenario that you are talking about myself. I find good pvp and do not feel the need for an arena that might change peoples patterns of behaviour.
Ofcourse it would be fun with dueling but... no.. still.. not for me, not now. I have a feeling it might do nasty things to the game and I¦m sticking with that feeling a bit longer.

I would love it if such a feature was implemented.
It's also funny the type of people who would hands down insist the sky would fall if it did come to pass.
Please give us a 1 depth skill queue CCP.

No. Eve is about risk in combat, then again I wouldnt be surprised if this did get put in so even all the empire carebears that are so scared of 0.0 and lowsec can get their pvp fix
If you want an arena you are a wuss, go all the way or don't waste server resources.

if there was a ccp-sanctioned means for betting, i could stake gladiators for a cut of the profit similiar to boxing managers. i could have an arena-pvp "school" (corporation) dedicated towards promoting "fighters". (like agony unleashed or eve university :P)
stats and graphs could be created to "pick your winners" similiar to horse-racing so i can make or lose isk.
this would be an interesting "profession" that i would much rather participate in than 0.0 politics, or mining what-have-you.
my choice of how i play the game is governed by the sum of all the choices. more options for playing eve allows me more opportunities to "fine-tune" my gameplay experience. this does result in some "dilution" of previously popular playing categories, but thats only because choices are limited, not as a result of a predisposition towards a certain style of playing... i dont think i am alone in thinking this way.
i dont see why eve needs to be "only" about politically motivated pvp (in 0.0), or gank-fests in low-sec, or mining and jonestown-suicide parties in high-sec.
one cant argue eve is a "sandbox" and then claim eve is "all about pvp" or is "pvp-oriented".
i want "more choices" for how to play eve. not less.
the game doesnt need to be an "either/or" experience. there can be nuance - and maybe some of that nuance is arena pvp.
give me arena pvp and a sanctioned means of betting!
