Seriously though, good luck to the folks working on it
yes, because $300k for a dbms is completely reasonable.
I see your point and raise you a free dbms --

I'm sat in my office staring at a windows 2003 server that's decided to shrug off it's mortal coil, and you know what i'm thinking? I'm thinking "thank the lords of binary I've got a lot less whiney users than CCP"
Mind you I'm also thinking, "if directorpatience>projecteddt then me = ok, else pootrajectory == fan"
No one is more frustrated by a downed server than the guy who's working on it.

I agree but if our servers die and we're incapable of restoring service within the times defined by the SLA then we get our asses dragged to court. CCP on the other hand makes a forum post and thats about it. They don't even give us our game-time back! Thats really weak compared to all other MMORPGs i've played so far. |

Better to invest some cash in a "real" DBMS and not that heap of bull that M$ sells as one. I've worked enough with both Oracle and MSSQL to know 120% which of the both is supperior.. and it is not MS SQL.
I don't understand why anybody would use a DBMS from a company that is known for terrible software-quality. I mean if you use MS word and it crashes a few times then thats ok... you may loose a letter but no big problem. But when it comes down to database apps then the quality is simply far more important then for gameboy-apps such as office.
And talking about price.. MS is also not exactly known for being so super cheap...

Agreed. In the real world downtime = loss of $$ and two many crashes = you loose your job. If we paid according to server up time rather than a flat rate, CCP would be broke. Take your monthly fee and divide it by how many minutes there are in the month. Take the average monthly downtime and subtract it out. There is no hunting like the hunting of man..] |

Not sure all what you did but EVE is widely fluctuating between 40% and 95% CPU usage.

Originally by: CCP Wrangler After the extended downtime today the server came up as planned, unfortunately we then experienced some load and the server was set to VIP mode while we fixed this.
Recently the server had some issues again, we'll post any news as soon as we have them.
Update: The database crashed due to a memory error in the SQL server because the Performance monitor and logging service did not want to start up after we changed config.
All of this for no difference in perfomance what so ever. I hope it was worth all the aggrivation for your engineers and customers To be honest CCP, I dont think you really know what causes these issues with performance, if you did i'm sure you would have sorted it out a long time ago. In the world of Eve nothing changes except the nerfbat. ----------------------------------------------- perhaps you confused me with someone who actually gives a funk?

Really? Come rat in Deklain, salvage the wrecks and the resulting cans will still be with you tomorrow after DT. 24 hours is the norm in the lesser ratted systems with no or little passing traffic. In the more popular systems, 4-6 hours is normal. ----------------------------------------------- perhaps you confused me with someone who actually gives a funk?

QFT DvlDwg and Lady Trade. I've been playing this game for 2 and a half years. Last time CCP gave us free game time to compensate server crashes was over 1 year ago. The funny thing is that the server has been in it's worst state ever for the last 3 or 4 months |

I bet your customers are paying a helluva lot more per month than you are paying CCP. You are probably also offering something more important than a computer game.
SLAs are expensive and you're not going to get one for the paltry sum we pay CCP. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

an SLA ey???
if sufficient people from EVE unite you could have yourselves an eveplayers Union in no time.
Once that gets off the ground, you would get some PR; the very first MMO Union. With that PR you could force CCP to do something about the crappy feel of the game atm.
Maybe 20k players with a class action suit would get something going..... but then again, the EULA prolly has something on the lines of; "we CCP cannot be held responsible for a game called EVE, we explicitly deny any responsibility to provide anything for the money you pay us."; every company has something along these lines in its general terms and principles.
(starts his mod intervention timer)
anyhow; I dont much care how long it lasts, every downtime is there to fix something. Lets just hope there is light and a lag free eve at the end of the tunnel. In the mean time; keep fighting the fight CCP. ----------------------------------------------- "Yes... I sleep with my myrmidon. It's nothing to be ashamed of!" |
