I'm interested in PvPing in gangs or a small fleet but I'm not sure what to specialise in first - Minmatar battleships or battlecruisers?
I think Minmatar battlecruisers require less skill points. They can probably distroy frigate-sized ships more easily than BSs. BCs are also a stepping stone to the Sleipnier (although this takes a bit longer to reach).
On the other hand, a Minmatar battleship at level 5 sounds pretty good. Powerful but lacking the speed (or excitement?) of BCs. However, I could be wrong - Minmatar battleships could be just as exiting, if not more so, than Minmatar battlecruisers.
Help me reach a decision. Which Minmatar ship type do you prefer, and why?

well...i do fly minmatar but not that often. i find the BCs to basicly be the biggest ship class i can stand. the others is just to slow and got it to hard to kill smaller targets...
Playing minmatar is "like going down a flight of stairs in a office chair firing an Uzi". |

Battlecruisers and battleships are just too fat and slow for me. If I was to do fleet pvp I would go in a support role as interceptor or indictor pilot.
Of your choices though I would pick battleship. First off because everybody needs battleship skills so they can rat efficiently. And, t2 large artillery is awesome.

not to mention that t1 arty setups do next to no damage compared to their t2 equivilents.
i don't like battleships particularly, but i've trained them because sometimes you just need to **** hot lead all over something. and stuff.
OP, personally i like t1 frigs and battlecruisers so my oppinion is a bit naff, but train them all - you'll want BS skills at some point and once you have all the support skills it's hardly any training time. Besides - the path to t2 large projectiles gets you t2 small & med anyway. you know it makes sense.

At the moment, I'm biased towards learning Minmatar Cruiser 5 first. This is because I like speed and it unlocks HAC, recons (yes, they are cool as well - choices, choices, choices!)
But eventually I'm sure I'll get Minmatar cruiser, battleship, and BCs to level 5 as well.

autocannons + heavy assault missiles in high mwd, web scram large shield extenders in mids (whether or not you fit web and scram depends on your gang) 3 gyros a tracking enhancer, maybe a damage control and a speed mod or whatever.
let the other guys tackle.. then just get in and do damage. really cheap, and its nice to be top damage dealer on the killmails :)
*edit* or throw some random ewar into the mid slots :) i don't really worry to much about tank, these things are cheap to lose anyway.

The only downside to the Hurricane is that BC 5 is nearly required for making it on par with the other BCs...just like all other Dbl Dmg Bonus Minnie ships.

Well, first let me preface this by saying I am Matar specced up to Commands and have quite a bit of fun in them haha. Of the Matar ships I am personally a huge fan of are the Vaga, Sleip, Huginn/Rapier. I opt to not use a BS most of the time because I roll solo quite often so being quick and agile is of great benefit.
Vagabond is a fav because its ability to control enagement range, gtfo if you find yourself up creek w/o a paddle, able to escape most camps etc.
Sleipnir because it has a sturdy tank, can pump out like 900dps with Hail, dictates range vs most other ships, excels primarily in a small gang IMO.
Huginn/Rapier are excellent because of their very unique bonus to webbers, I am still somewhat new to them, however, they are they are the best at dictating range and controlling the tempo of the fight. Nano it and you can avoid a lot of bad situations.
A cheap ship to start on while you skill up would be the rupture/stabber, get those T2 Auto's and learn how to fight in falloff and control range with use of barrage. Then move into Vaga and then Sleip etc etc. You will know when you are rdy for it.
If you want to use a BC the hurricane is quite powerful, it takes great skills to make it shine, but in a gang you should be fine. I suggest the cruisers over BC for a couple reasons;
1. Cheaper to kit out, therefore when you fully T2 fit one it doesnt hurt too bad when it pops
2. Easier to have an alt haul a cruiser
3. Being more agile they are more forgiving while you a figuring out how to kite ships in combat
Hope you find this helpful man.

More fun to fly? Neither. Although I love the Hurricane, Minmatar cruisers are tons of fun to fly. ------------

Play around with BCs first, all Minmatar ships are tricky to fly and the BSs are especially skill intensive. People don't fly around BSs as much as they used to anyway.

Personally, I love it when I'm in a Tempest or Maelstrom pounding away at people with my 1400mm II's, knowing I'm doing a ton of damage and making my target really sad :)
That is really fun to me, but flying around in a Hurricane doing less damage, but moving around the field faster is also pretty fun. But I prefer BS's... I also have BS 5 and a ton of skills in gunnery too lol.

Given the choice between the tech 1 Minmatar BCs and the battleships, I'll take the battleships every time. The additional slots, hitpoints, grid, and firepower allow for much greater versatility. On top of that, the maelstrom is just freaking uber as far as DPS goes - mine breaks 1100 DPS - and still tanks quite well.
When you get into the tech II battlecruisers, though, it becomes a toss-up. In some situations I'd prefer to fly the sleipnir, but in others I prefer the maelstrom or tempest. It just depends. -Wrayeth n00b Extraordinaire

BC by far. I would train HACs/Recons first as others have suggested. The reason being is that you have to research medium proj guns to get large guns as well as you must get cruiser V to get a sleip so the skill path is pretty clear. I recommend t2 med guns then cruiser V then recons then BC/BS V.
